How good is Gaffney

I was wondering if we drafted Jabbar Gaffney how good is he compared to the other Florida recievers that were so hyped like Anthony, Green, Hilliard, Taylor. Is he a better overall prospect then they were? They haven't done much in this league, so is Gaffney next in line or is he the real deal.

I want you guys to answer this honest and not consider how those guys mentioned above have done in their NFL career, but how they were coming out of college.

Gaffney, to be successful, would have to be a player in the Bruce mold. One who is fluid and maintains football speed in pads that sets him apart where he might not have quite that speed without pads on the track that he does on the field with pads. I don't know enough about college football to speak overly intelligently on many players at this point as I do as much of my background on players we might have an interest in during the offseason. But, to my preliminary way of thinking, I'd sure like Va. Tech's Davis more than Gaffney on the strength of glorious athletic prowess. But, Spurrier is going to want people that fit what he does and he would likely be comfortable with Gaffney who is said to be among the best Pro prospects he's ever had at the position.

Gaffney has superior WR skills: route running, body control, hands, finding open spots in the zone, etc then a WR like Andre Davis. Davis has the superior physical skills: stength, speed, running ability. I think Gaffney is the better prospect just based on that. I don't see him being any better a prospect then Travis Taylor was, but that's not an insult in any way. I like Lelie more, but that's probably my biased opinion kicking in. Bryant has been scouted and noted to take about 50% of the plays off ala Randy Moss. No thanks.

Art said it well. Spurrier would pick Gaffney over all the WRs in this draft if given the opportunity. He just may get it too. I would rather see a DL drafted as well.

I also believe that if Spurrier takes a WR, it will be Gaffney. And since Gaffney's stock has dropped as of late, Spurrier may have a chance at him. I've even seen speculation that the team may take WRs in round one and two. I hope not...

Like others, I like Lelie more than Gaffney, yet I wouldn't be depressed if he ended up on our roster. He runs great routes(better than Lelie), and has very good hands. My only problem is that recievers selected in the first round usually don't play very well until their second or third seasons.

This isn't a 1 year plan here. I am looking for some sustained success. No WR outside of some freak named Randy Moss makes a huge impact in their rookie year. In 2-3 years, a WR duo of Gardner-Gaffney/Lelie/Bryant could be deadly. Well worth waiting a few years for don't you think?

On a 9 point scale I give Gaffney a rating of 8.2 if he plays for a team that runs the Fun 'N Gun and 7.1 if he's picked by a team other than the Redskins.

A milestone: post #200!!! I see BallCoachSpurrier rolled off the couch from taking a nap, fell on the floor and then wondered what time it was, and then decided to make a post.

If you guys want good up to the minute scouting information on college players go to the following FREE website and click on the player under their "player profile list." You can read scouting reports on Gaffney or any of the top players. I posted this before but i know few people read it.

http://www.draftbook.com/indxdraft.html

[ February 28, 2002, 05:27 AM: Message edited by: inmate running the asylum ]
