Vikings spurn Jets' interest in Moss

BY BILL WILLIAMSON

Pioneer Press

The New York Jets went fishing late last week in an attempt to repair their receiving corps, asking the Vikings about the availability of Randy Moss.

The phone conversation didn't last long. The Vikings quickly informed the Jets they had no intention of trading their star receiver.

"Why would we?'' coach Mike Tice said. "Randy is our star and a huge part of what we do.''

Newsday reported in Sunday's editions that Jets general manager Terry Bradway called the Vikings late last week about Moss' availability, but the talks were just casual, according to Bradway.

Because the Vikings were so abrupt in their stance, talks did not get far. However, the Jets are expected to get the No. 13 overall pick in the NFL draft from Washington as compensation for the Redskins' signing of restricted free-agent receiver Laveranues Coles. He has signed an offer sheet with Washington that the Jets are not expected to match. So New York probably would be willing to package its two first-round picks, plus another pick and perhaps a player, in a deal for a player of Moss' caliber.

Trading Moss wouldn't make financial sense for the Vikings. Moss, who received an $8 million roster bonus two weeks ago, counts more than $13 million on the salary cap this year, so basically the Vikings couldn't trade him even if they wanted to.

"The whole thing doesn't make sense for us,'' Tice said.

Still, it is not uncommon for teams to dangle trade possibilities. The Vikings have been approached by New Orleans about tackle Kyle Turley and by Washington regarding cornerback Fred Smoot. They didn't show interest in those deals, either. They haven't been approached by San Diego, which is looking to trade linebacker Junior Seau. The Vikings don't have much interest in acquiring Seau.

Tice and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan took quarterback Jeff George out to dinner Sunday. George is visiting through today and is talking to the Vikings about becoming Daunte Culpepper's backup. Tennessee cornerback Donald Mitchell also arrived Sunday.

Carter to re-sign? There is a strong chance the Vikings will talk to Cris Carter about re-signing so he can retire as a Viking. Carter retired again last week from Miami. He signed with the Dolphins in October, five months after retired from the Vikings. Tice said he and Carter haven't talked about it since Carter retired from the Dolphins but they spoke about it last year.

"If that's what Cris wants to do, I'm sure we will do that,'' Tice said.

Briefly: The Vikings are high on kicker Todd France and punter Nick Murphy, both in NFL Europe's training camp... . Although Baltimore announced it is still finishing a deal with Orlando Brown, the Ravens are expected to sign him. The Vikings offered Brown $2.5 million a season compared with the $1 million he agreed to with Baltimore to remain near his children... . The Vikings remain in contact with the agents of tight end Hunter Goodwin and defensive end Lance Johnstone.

And the Skins FO gets ridiculed? No one should have a 13 mil cap hit.

that's IF they would trade him now. The entire bonus would come due immediately. The same thing would happen if we were to trade lavar right now too (i'm guessing i'm right. if someone actually wants to do the number, be my guest!)
