Rumour - Michael Westbrook visiting Cowboys

Qcard

Recommended Posts

There is a rumour going on within Cowboy fans sites that Michael Westbrook had a workout with the Cowboys at Valley ranch. Apparently he ran 4.36 and 4.32 - 40 and is taking a physical this afternoon. He was seen leaving Stephen Jones office with some paperwork and notebook.
I know most of you guys dislike Westbrook but when healthy he is a monster.
Just imagine Galloway,Rocket and Westbrook against Champ Bailey, Fred Smoot and Darrel Green(the Greatest IMO - Though I am Dallas Fan).

Westbrook is the mirage Hall of Famer that never seems to materialize.

One year it's injuries. Another its getting along with his teammates. Another year its the offensive system.

Altogether it's 7 years of frustration and one year with 65 catches for 1,191 yards and 9 td's.

so, what is it going to be going forward?

Jones has decided since a few years ago that he is going to roll the dice and make major gambles from time to time.

So far his gambles haven't paid off, but that isn't going to stop him from trying.

Don't tell me that Joey Galloway has been worth Shaun Alexander and Koren Robinson, the players selected with the two picks Dallas gave up.

If Jones had kept those picks and selected those players he would have young skill players to build around and perhaps be a contender.

Instead he has 32 year old Ismail and 30 year old Galloway with 33 year old Emmitt Smith, while at quarterback he has Carter and now Hutchinson, both raw players with a lot of learning to do.

It isn't a good mix as far as I can see, pending what happens in the draft.

Well, it is kind of an unsubstantiated rumor, but I can't necessarily write it off just because it originates from Cowboy fans. Tempting as it may be. If he did in fact run a 4.32, then he has broken a personal best, if I recall properly.

That would in effect make him faster than J.Green and just a tad bigger. S.S. would be good to give this closer examination. Though with that kind of time and considering where he visited, one would think there would be a media trail leading to this. We'll just have to wait and see. (hate that).

Honestly, considering the rivalry between the 2 teams and they are in the same division, I just don't see the Redskins letting M.W. go there. I it know sounds foolish, but look at some of the comments made in the Buffalo/Bledsoe saga.

I like galloway but I do not think he was worth 2 NO. 1s. But you have to understand where Jerry was coming from. He had a stud QB in Aikman and only Rocket available when Irvin went down in Philly. Jerry thought Aikman would be able to play another 2-3 years thus he needed a go to receiver. If Jerry knew that Troy career would end due to injury he would have never traded for Galloway.
I am hoping we do sign Westbrook to a cap friendly deal. He hasn't received large contracts offers from teams therefore most teams appear to be scared. I believe he may sign with Dallas for a second chance and publicity of going to a division rival. In Dallas's case the upside that Westbrook brings by far outweighs the negatives. Dallas was a team last year void of any impact studs other than Larry Allen and Woodson. They play hard and the chemistry is great. If Westbrook became a cancer Jerry would cut him in a heart beat regardless of cap ramifications because Jerry Jones answers to no one but himself. Luxury of being Owner/GM.

[ March 25, 2002, 01:55 PM: Message edited by: Qcard ]

I can not argue with that, hopefully being the 3rd WR will lessen the injury factor.

Having Westbrook sign with the Cowboys would be pretty righteous - I've been booing him for years and now I'll be able to do it unabashedly.

Like most vets, if he signs an inexpensive, back-loaded incentive laden contract, you get a good deal. If you pay a lot for Michael Westbrook, you'll be disappointed.

One thing you'll find refreshing is that I'll bet he'll be happy to trash the Redskins. Your media will eat it up, just as we would if a disaffected ex-Cowboy came over and dissed Jerry.

As for Michael 'Groin Pull' Westbrook's speed, it really doesn't matter if he ran a 4.19, does it? You've had a chance to watch how he does against your cornerbacks for years. Does that inspire any confidence?

[ March 25, 2002, 03:07 PM: Message edited by: TennesseeCarl ]

He has never had a consistent QB whom he could build chemistry with. I honestly believe if he signs with Dallas and stays healthy, Westbrook will have some success. He will not have the pressure of being the GO to Guy.

I'm stumped as to why Dallas is even intersted.

It seemed like every time we played the Cowboys, Westbrook would talk a bunch of smack and then completely disappear come gametime.

I'll never forget the game where both Connell and Westbrook were gabbing about Deion not being able to cover them, etc. Deion (that's right, old 'he who is afraid of contact' Deion) popped Connell in the mouth and did a great job shutting our receivers down.

But whatever. I'm sure Smoot will smack Westie in the mouth and shut him down, too, if he does sign with Dallas.

QCard, Westbrook has not been amazing when he has been healthy

What he has been is effective against lesser corners

He will get his 150 yards against the Dave Thomases and Tyrone Pooles of the world, but has really struggled against the likes of Deion Sanders, Ray Buchanan, Charles Woodson, Chris MacCalister, etc.........

You are right that IF healthy and matched up against #2 and #3 corners Michael can be very effective.

the problem is if he is not the star he begins to sulk and that poor attitude alienates teammates and like Terry Glenn brings them down.

Perhaps the ability of Westbrook to handle being the #2 or #3 receiver on another team is the PRIMARY challenge, not keeping him healthy.

NavyDave - You seem to have forgotten the Eagles drafted Freddie Mitchell last year. As with most receivers... he may take a few years to blossom; though he may surprise next year. I think Mitchell will - at the very least - be an excellent #2 receiver but I think he has a shot at being a legitimate #1.

If you look at Reid's selections of former Skins... he has shown he'll sign the hard-working and team oriented players. Westbrook won't be wearing that hideous green uniform any time soon.

Reid's restraint in free agency given his cap space the past two years has been admirable

other teams would have loaded up on geezers and suffered for it in future seasons.

I still say we need to re-sign him to play as the third WR. He'll probably come cheap, since he's been such a disappointment and interest in him is minimal. Lockett would be the best 4th WR in the league, and Anthony at 5th? That would be the WR corps Spurrier had been dreaming of. However, it'll never happen.

I agree with must of you guys, Westbrook is a monster against the 2nd. or 3rd. cb. If we can get him at a cheap price we would have a very solid to good group of WR, all sizes and speeds and receiving types, so it be harder to defend 2 or 3 types of different receivers...

I believe the lines have been drawn about this guy. That is for sure. Its up to Spurrier, Snyder and Joe M to decide if he stays or goes and what he is worth. I am sure someone will pay for him.

I think Michael's biggest problem with fans of the Redskins is he is the ultimate sign of Norv Turner. He is the one player that should of had the biggest impact for the team, but did not. Injuries and coaching staffs pretty much made sure of that.

I was scanning a game the other day from 99 and saw that I had taped a little interview with Henry Ellard. They asked him if he thought the Skins could produce 2 80+ catch and 1000+ yd receivers. His answer was pretty straight foward:

"In Norv's offense here in Washington, he is a run oriented coach. The back will always be one of the top 5 in the league unless he gets injured. I don't think Norv will ever have another WR catch 80 balls. He just doesn't throw to them enough. The year I got 80+ was by accident. Not by design. Too many passes to the backs. Plus, Norv needs a very consistent QB and I think Brad has shown what his offense can do. They haven't had that in Washington in a long time."

Take that for what it is worth on what criteria you use for being a #1 WR in this league.

Just FYI bulldog, Westbrook has never played against McCallister or Buchanon and when he played Woodson, the Skins were dominant on the ground and Stephan Davis got all the passes that game. 7 to be exact. MW had 2 for 28 yds. But to put in context, Tim Brown had 7 for 58 yds. And finally, Deion shut everyone down for the longest time, but MW did catch at least 10 balls vs Deion in the 3 games that both were healthy enough to play in. Just FYI for all.

I tape both wins and losses.

[ March 25, 2002, 08:36 PM: Message edited by: UtahRedskins ]

Perhaps it matches their fans.

Anyway, Westy to the Cowboys is a double edged sword, much like Westy's own career has been. He holds the potential (always the watch word with him) as being a vengeful former Redskin who torments us twice per year. And yet he also could be a multi-million dollar albatross on Dallas' cap and in their locker room.

I'd just as soon see him go, even to Dallas than let him linger around here longer like the fart he and his career have been.

In having visited Dallas' offices, I wouldn't say it didn't happen, but as far as a physical, paperwork in his hand therafter means nothing. However to have a "PLAYBOOK" would have to mean he's already signed.

If it's just a notebook, that could be a book for grocery shopping for all we know. JJ likes to plant stories or rumors to stir. Good marketing people like to sometimes stir up the populous to get reactions and analyze them for their own consumption. If the information they can put together from the data collected is good, it is used to some extent as a measuring stick.

Is SS's offense in much better shape with the current stable of WR's or is it window dressing, with an actual desperate need to sign Westbrook???

No, the Skins will be just fine with or without him. I don't believe he'd sign with Dallas, because Ismail and Galloway are #1 and #2, which is where Westbrook was with the Skins. Accepting #3 at Dallas is no better than taking a much better poised team for deep playoff runs in St. Louis or San Francisco or even New England as a #3. At Philly he could even be re-teamed with Thrash.

[ March 26, 2002, 04:07 AM: Message edited by: indyskinsfan ]
