Boxing News:

-The August 9th "welterweight" bout between Rod Salka and Danny Garcia is contracted to take place at a catchweight of 142

-The deal for Emmanuel Taylor to face Broner on Sept 6 fell thru. Looks like Paul Spadafora is now being asked to step in.

-Mayweather Promotions was just granted its promoters license in Nevada with a 5-0 vote. (Already obtained in Washington and most recently New York). Which means after Sept 13, Mayweather or his fighters won't have to rely on GBP to do any more of their fights.

-Early Vegas odds have Pacquiao very heavily favored over Algieri. I expect the gap to close slightly within the coming months as people start to familiarize themselves with Algieri.

Salka isn't even rated at his natural weightclass of 135.

Danny Garcia will next decide that Salka can only throw punches with his off hand and he must wear an eye patch.

Deal done for Emmanuel Taylor to face Broner in Cinci on 9/6. Originally Taylor wanted more money. Nonetheless, Taylor will earn a career high payday for this match.

GGG is the most exciting fighter today, BUT he really has to step up his competition. He and Cotto needs to mix it up later this year.

Yea he called out Cotto after his victory yesterday. Would be a pretty stiff test for both guys.

GGG is good, but he does need to step up the competition. He and his team are saying guys are afraid to fight him. I'm pretty sure, there are a few that may be hesitant. GGG and team said he would fight anyone from 154 - 168 lbs. Yet, when Andre Ward's name is brought up, they get quiet as a church mouse. GGG is just looking for the big payday now. Can't blame him on that. If the fight with Cotto takes place, I'd favor Cotto in a hard earned decision. That fight will be a war.  Cotto will fight smarter than the guys GGG has fought so far. GGG has power, but the guys he's fought punk out after getting hit. They don't box effectively. They let a little pressure get to them and get trapped against the ropes and take bombs from GGG. That is just asking to get KO'ed.

"Only days after entering a drug treatment facility for the second time, recent Hall of Fame inductee was offered a $100 million dollar buyout for his company, Golden Boy Promotions.

A report by ESPN’s Dan Rafael, sheds new light into the growing out-of-the-ring drama between GBP and their former CEO, Richard Schaefer."

Brandon Rios is supposed to face Diego Chaves this weekend but Chaves is stuck in Argentina due to visa issues. Arum says Chaves will probably be replaced by Jose Zepeda.

Also Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr and Carl Froch are back in negotiations for a January show down at the MGM Grand. Final details are still being worked out. I hope Arum doesn't drop the ball again like he did for JCC vs GGG.

Looks like GBP are trying to avoid doing a split telecast and get all three fighters to fight in Cinci on the 9/6 card.

Adrien Broner vs Emmanuel Taylor will headline the card

Lucas Matthysse vs Roberto Ortiz as the co-main

Andre Berto still has not opponent finalized

http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/11297248/bernard-hopkins-set-fight-sergey-kovalev-175-pound-unification-bout

As long as light heavyweight titleholder Sergey Kovalev does not lose to Blake Caparello, he will meet Bernard Hopkins to unify three of the major 175-pound world titles in November.

Hopkins, Kovalev and their promoters signed contracts Friday afternoon for the fight a mere 30 hours after the camps opened discussions. Kathy Duva of Main Events, Kovalev's promoter, told ESPN.com.

The fight would mark the return of Golden Boy to HBO for the first time since the network publicly severed ties with the promotional company in March 2013, shortly after Hopkins' win against Tavoris Cloud on the network, because of major differences they were having over their philosophy of making and selling fights to HBO. Golden Boy has had all of its major fights since on rival Showtime, although since De La Hoya took over the day-to-day business of the company in June, following the resignation of CEO Richard Schaefer, he promised to try his best to make the best fights regardless of the promoter or network.

Kovalev will probably lose on Saturday because we can't have nice things in boxing.

Seriously though, if B-Hop beats Kovalev, he makes a major move on the ATG list.

Never been impressed with Vargas. I agree he gets schooled by other decent 140 lbs fighters. I remember when he was an up and coming fighter under Mayweather Promotions. He left to go to Top Rank for more exposure. He's getting more exposure, but he's just an average fighter.
