-- Shane Matthews Wants to Play for Spurrier --

The Chicago Sun-Times reports new Washington Redskins HC Steve Spurrier's biggest fan on the Bears said he would love to join his former college coach, but QB Shane Matthews remains under contract to the Bears through 2002. Spurrier surprised even Matthews when he resigned from his post at Florida to coach in the NFL. ''I'd love to go, but I'm still under contract,'' said Matthews, the backup to QB Jim Miller and an eight-year veteran who set 50 Florida records in three seasons as a starter. The Redskins are eager to replace QB Tony Banks, and Spurrier said he would prefer to develop a young quarterback but would be ''potentially'' interested in one of his former players. QB Danny Wuerffel, the Bears' third quarterback, won the Heisman Trophy at Florida in 1996, leading the Gators to the national championship.

Would you be interested in Shane?

Banks' career numbers indicate he is readily replaceable.

After all there were only 12 other NFC quarterbacks that produced better numbers in 2001 laugh.gif

Banks' history is that he gains jobs but then loses them with inconsistent, mistake-filled play. I don't see that pattern changing.

Bill Walsh was quoted as saying he thinks Banks could be a top qb in the NFL with the proper coaching, but I am not buying it. After all Banks has been a free agent 3 times when the 49ers could have acquired him and developed him, but they like a lot of other teams took a pass.

If Vermeil and Billick couldn't get Banks to be consistent as an NFL passer I think that is a statement in and of itself.

While Spurrier may take a chance on a player he hopes will come in and do the job, why would he go with a commodity at qb that he knows will NOT be able to do the job? biggrin.gif

Yeah, Bulldog, the trick here is if you convince folks to sit on keeping Banks as the number one, you are forced at least into a contract with him for a while, then a QB contrversy that keeps the offense off balance and eventually a likely mediocre season.

No thanks. Let him compete in camp against the other QB's to prove his worth. In face to face to competition, no holds barred. No "penciled" in starting to avoid the ax!

Remember the name Dave Brown-- He's similar in stature to Bledsoe (6' 6", 230 lbs), he's a Duke alum (Spurrier recruited him), and he's the #3 QB at Arizona.

He's considered one of the smartest QBs; he'll definitely get a look from Steve.

Matthews interested in playing for Spurrier's Skins to Bears for '02

January 16, 2002

BY BRAD BIGGS STAFF REPORTER

Steve Spurrier's biggest fan on the Bears said he would love to join his former college coach, but Shane Matthews remains under contract to the Bears through 2002.

Spurrier surprised even Matthews when he resigned from his post at Florida to coach in the NFL. Spurrier was introduced as the Washington Redskins' coach Tuesday.

''I'd love to go, but I'm still under contract,'' said Matthews, the backup to Jim Miller and an eight-year veteran who set 50 Florida records in three seasons as a starter.

The Redskins are eager to replace Tony Banks, and Spurrier said he would prefer to develop a young quarterback but would be ''potentially'' interested in one of his former players. Danny Wuerffel, the Bears' third quarterback, won the Heisman Trophy at Florida in 1996, leading the Gators to the national championship.

''There's no doubt he'll win,'' Matthews said of Spurrier. ''He's won at every level he's been at, and he's got some good talent on that team.''

Matthews said Spurrier's wide-open passing attack will work in the NFL.

''He's not going to change at all,'' Matthews said. ''People want to compare it to Gary Crowton's offense. No. Don't even go there. You've got to realize he's the one who calls the plays, and he does a pretty dang good job at calling plays, when to do it and tendencies of other teams.

''It's all instinctive. Every coach I've been with in the NFL, they have a script, and in practice they have a script. Well, he's never even done that. He's not scared to try anything. He is going to be a breath of fresh air in the league.''

Aw to breath again smile.gif I recall saying that when Marty arrived and for the most part, it proved true, because the 8-8 in 2001 was better than 2000. It regrouped a team into thinking "team" not, me, me, me!

So yes that article, from an understudy says a lot. Then to have so many accomplished coaches, players, and management give him the nod is just overwhelming. No wonder that sparked so much jealousy towards Dan. Jeez.

The part that jumps out at me is " ... Spurrier said he would prefer to develop a young quarterback ... "

As I suggested earlier, I have a funny feeling we're going to be a major player come draft day. We may end up leading the league in guys with "arrington" in their names. smile.gif

Marty Ball to Fireball.
