Redskins play shell game to sign Jansen.

by Rick Snider

Washington Times.

Ashland -- The Washington Redskins and starting right offensive tackle agreed to a six-year, $25 million contract yesterday, assuring the Redskins would retain the burly right tackle as first reported by the Times two months ago.

In order to sign Jansen the Redskins have essentially announced that they will not be able to retain Stephen Davis. Davis, who was misused by Spurrier and his pass-first offense is not a surprise player in the order of cuts as the Times reported this months ago.

What will surprise Redskin fans is the Jansen contract runs very deep. Because of it, the team will be unable to retain Daryl Gardener, Champ Bailey, Lavar Arrington or Patrick Ramsey. The team is already putting out feelers about possible trade offers, but, league officials state that the Redskins who were just $4 million under next year's cap just went over it with the signing of Jansen and will have to cut half the team in order to field a roster next season.

League sources further indicate that paying an offensive tackle a contract that tops $4 million a year and approaches $5 million a season, as the Redskins just did with Jansen, is financial suicide and will further set the organization back. League sources agree on this.
