Blondie
I am the flag of the United States of America. My name is Old Glory. I fly atop the world's tallest buildings. I stand watch in America's halls of justice. I fly majestically over great institutions of learning. I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world. Look up and see me! I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice. I stand for freedom. I am confident. I am arrogant. I am proud. When I am flown with my fellow banners, my head is a little higher, my colors a little truer. I bow to no one. I am recognized all over the world. I am worshipped, I am loved, and I am feared! I have fought in every battle of every war for more than 200 years: Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomattox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of Normandy, Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, in the Persian Gulf, and a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were there with me. I was there! I led my soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. I followed them and watched over them. They loved me. I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima. I was dirty, battle-worn and tired. But my soldiers cheered me! And I was proud! I have been soiled, burned, torn, and trampled on the streets of countries that I have helped set free. It does not hurt - for I am invincible. I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my own country, and when it is by those whom I have served with in battle, it hurts - for I am their own. But I shall overcome. For I am strong! I have slipped the bonds of earth and from my vantagepoint on the moon, I stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space. I have been a silent witness to all of America's finest hours. But my finest hour comes when I am torn in strips to be used as bandages For healing my wounded comrades on the field of battle; when I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers, my sailors, my airmen, my Marines, and my Coast Guardsmen; and when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving mother, at the graveside of her fallen son or daughter. I am proud. My name is "Old Glory" long may I wave, dear God, long may I wave! Author unknown Happy and Safe July 4th To those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to allow me and mine the freedom to celebrate this July 4th............I salute you. LD0506
God that's beautiful Blondie, thank you. :applause: I have tried to make a point of reminding people that today isn't about just having a Tuesday off and getting drunk. We all need to stop for a moment today and honor the memory of all of those that serve and have served for over two centuries to build, maintain and protect all that we take for granted each and every day. God bless America and Old glory, today and the other 364 days of the year.

Jimbo
Thanks Blondie! Here's one called "The Ragged Old Flag": I walked through a county courthouse square On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there. I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down, He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town". I said, "Your old flag pole is leanin' a little bit, And that’s a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it". He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down, "Is this the first time you've been to our little town" I said, "I think it is" He said "I don’t like to brag, but we’re kinda proud of That Ragged Old Flag "You see, we got a little hole in that flag there, When Washington took it across the Delaware. and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it, writing "Oh Say Can You See" It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson tugging at its seams. and It almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag, But she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville, And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg, And the south wind blew hard on That Ragged Old Flag "On Flanders Field in World War I, She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun, She turned blood red in World War II She hung limp, and low, a time or two, She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam. She waved from our ships upon the briny foam and a while back they about quit wavin' her here at home in her own good land here She’s been abused, She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused, And the government for which she stands Has been scandalized throughout out the land. And she’s getting thread bare, and she’s wearin' thin, But she’s in good shape, for the shape she’s in. Cause she’s been through the fire before and I believe she can take a whole lot more. "So we raise her up every morning And we bring her down slow every night, We don’t let her touch the ground, And we fold her up right. On second thought I DO like to brag Cause I’m mighty proud of That Ragged Old Flag"

Mass_SkinsFan
Thank you blondie, and the others who have posted wonderful things in this thread. The 4th of July always used to be my father's favorite holiday. He was a Vietnam veteran as I've commented on several times in the past. I heard a song on the radio this morning that makes me think of my favorite place to have visited in the Washington DC area when I was there in 1991... Arlington National Cemetary. I'm not sure that all of you would have heard it when it came out a while back. I don't have a link to the music, but here is the text.... Artist/Band: Adkins Trace Lyrics for Song: Arlington I never thought that this is where i'd settle down, I thought i'd die an old man back in my hometown, They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done, there's a big white house sits on a hill just up the road, the man inside he cried the day they brought me home, they folded up a flag and told my mom and dad, we're proud of your son Chorus: And I'm proud to be on this peaceful peice of property, I'm on sacred ground and i'm in the best of company, I'm thankful for those things i've done, I can rest in peice, I'm one of the chosen ones, I made it to Arlington I remember daddy brought me here when i was eight, we searched all day to find out where my granddad lay, and when we finally found that cross, he said, "son this is what it cost to keep us free" Now here i am, a thousand stones away from him, he reconized me on the first day i came in, and it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels, and saluted me. (Repeat Chorus) and everytime i hear twenty-one guns, i know they brought another hero home to is we're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done, we can rest in peace, 'cause we are the chosen ones, we made it to arlington, yea dust to dust, don't cry for us,we made it to arlington
