The Earth is added in to show the scale of the solar flares. If the Earth was that close to the sun we'd have been cooked a long time ago. The picture was taken from a yard in Rockville. I would estimate that with the scope, solar filter and optics you wouldn't get change from fifteen thousand. Here's the scope next to Albert.
