CPstretch
can someone explain who goes to the supplemental draft as opposed to the regular draft
rvan1
supplemental draft consists of players that did not declare themselves eligible for whatever reason for the original draft (one example, Ahmad Brooks of UVA-- just got thrown off the team). Teams can choose players in this draft, but if they do, they forfeit the corresponding pick for next season (a team will give up a 1st roudn pick if they chose to pick brooks in the draft's first roudn)

fdarugar
I never really understood how this works...teams forfeit their picks in the supp draft or take a chance on a player? No one ever gets picked, the guy will most likely end up a UDFA.

Dirk Diggler
It's basically a silent draft, in the same order as the draft next week. It starts with Houston - they're asked if they want to forfeit their #1 next year for anyone. Then on to New Orleans, Tennessee, and so on down the line all the way through the 7th round. It's pretty rare that someone gives up a future #1. Last year I believe that there was only 1 player drafted and that was a DT from USC to the Dolphins maybe? This year, I think Ahmad Brooks will probably get some sniffs in the 4th round or so.
CPstretch
so if those teams have to forfeit a pick, where does that pick go?
rvan1
so if those teams have to forfeit a pick, where does that pick go? i believe they get skipped over--- like when their pick comes up, it will list their supplemental draft player and go on to the next team... not 100% sure, but i think thats how it works
CPstretch
weird. its weird that we know so little about this draft too. it must really be rare that players are taken
Kurd Cudins
Any team that uses a pick in the supplemental draft loses the pick in the corresponding round of the real draft the following year. For instance, the Dolphins used a 5th rounder last year. So their pick in the fifth, what would have been the 149th pick, is just skipped over. rvan1
Why do only some teams receive supplemental draft picks? every team receives the picks. whether or not they use them is up to them. you might be confusing this with compensatory picks, which are late round picks given to teams that suffer a lot in free agency losses
Joe Sick
i gotcha now. who was the person they took? Wasn't it the guy who cried in training camp, because Saban was on his butt?

Joe Sick
Yep, it was him. Manuel Wright from USC - kicked off team and drafted by Miami in the supplemental... Here is the crying story. His teammates filled his locker with kleenex. Too funny... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/mcclain/3289598.html They also mention an ex-Oiler kicker who broke down crying after he was cut for missing a field goal versus the Skins. daveakl
The supplemental draft's order of selection is determined in a three-tiered lottery. The first tier is comprised of teams that finished 6-10 or worse in 2004. Those go into a lottery for the draft's top six picks. The remaining non-playoff teams (and teams that didn't land in the top six) fall into the second tier lottery to round out the top 20 selections. The final tier is a lottery among the playoff teams to determine picks 21-32. Once the first round is set, the order is repeated through each round of the supplemental process. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-notebook051905&prov=yhoo&type=lgns When a team's pick comes up, they can opt to use that pick or not too. By using a pick in the 2006 supplemental draft, that team will forfeit their pick in the corresponding round in the 2007 college draft. An example of this was when the Houston Texans selected RB Tony Hollings with their second round pick in the supplemental and had to forfeit their regular second rounder for him. http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/supplementaldraft.htm
