Coach Williams
I decided to give Norton a shot when it comes down to their firewall.... I usually just use the antivirus and then I back it up with zonealarm..... those to usually eat about 21Megs NAV+FW= 26megs.... So far I have no complaints so, is their anything I should know about? Coach Williams
NORTON seems to use a lot of system resources AVG, Panda and McAfee are craptacular.....they couldn't hold Nortons **** I'll upgrade if it gets outta control but I don't see 26 megs to be extreme if quality is upgraded..... notoriouslyKEN
I like Symantec products. It's mcafee I can't stand. I swear that thing runs at 80+ megs of sys resources just for AV
hokie4redskins
Yeah, Norton's got my PC on lockdown, but my computer runs extremely slow at times. Opening Firefox will take 10-20 seconds for instance. I fixed the registry, I defragged, I cleaned disk, I zap all spyware. Sometimes I think I have my computer TOO protected. Any suggestions? I suppose you technically don't though..... Just a note for ya because I've been a tech forever...... Spyware blaster, MS-antiSW, Reg Supreme& mechanic all suck.... Pestpatrol, spybot, and ad-aware are all free and a ****load more effective.... Don't take my word for it though.... try them.....SERIOUSLY..... www.freedownloads.com

Fred Jones
I use Zone Alarm Pro with the anti-spyware enabled. I use Ad-Watch SE Professional with Ad-Watch monitoring enabled. (With these two I don't need spybots, and both protect the registry) I use Kaspersky anti-virus (Yes, I like it better than Norton) If I didn't use kaspersky I would use Bitdefender (Good and cheap) I use SpywareBlaster (Tried others and found this free program to be ok) I replaced my host file with http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm I use MSConfig Cleanup to cleanup my MSconfig file I use Registry Repair to clean my registry I use Free Ram XP Pro to make sure my RAM is free Edit: On a side note: http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

jrockster21
Stupid Norton Internet Security started freezing up on me...I can't even open it anymore. I hate antivirus software...such SHEIT!!! I wish it wasn't a necessity.
Coach Williams
I'm curious why you say AVG is crap. because you have it..... and because it lacks the definitions norton does.....there's a reason Norton is the most expensive.......Many customers have learned the hard way..... ____________ To the guy above who has KVG? and Ad-Aware.....Spy sweeper detects 127,128 different traces of "bugs" ( for lack of a better word ) Ad-Aware holds it own but it is actually 3rd to Spy Sweeper and Pest Patrol...... Read about'm you'll see bro......
RLeVan
If that's the only reason, I'll stick with the free version of AVG that is updated twice a week and save the $50 a year for something else. Any AV, whether you pay for it or not solely relies on the user not to go clicking on things that get them in trouble. In fact, many viruses are solely targeted at Norton either to disable or confuse the software. With the number of programs you have installed, it looks like you're doing more work than your AV prog. To each his/her own.
herrmag
Everything as far as Enterprise level leans towards Symantec. On the individual level, I honestly don't know. Perhaps running MAC OS X or Linux, would lighten the load. Then again, forget MAc, run Linux. It's free . Damn shame the rest of the world won't jump on board. But honestly, I see no reason why Symantec won't get the job done. They are the industry leaders......Then again, that's what blackhats target

Several years ago there was a link posted that lead to a anti-bush page.....and when I clicked on it ( I did several times to make sure ) NORTON went nutz talking about multiple bloodhouds in the cookies.... no one else knew what I was talking about......who knows what antivirus they had that was allowing them to stroll in..... I personally would use AVG if I couldn't afford NAV but to me the performance loss isn't worth it.......Guys like me are in business because people don't wanna pay annually

However, if you combo the freeware, you MIGHT be able to match it. But, MIGHT is the key word.
RLeVan
I agree. I just don't think there is one be all end all in AV. It changes so frequently that people get led to believe that they have have the best of whats out there. Just because Symantec has greater market share doesn't mean it's the best thing on the block. Mac OS and Linux are not immune to viruses, they are just targeted less since they aren't used as much. I was only asking about AVG, since it got slammed in an earlier post. I'm not trying to get into an argument with anyone, just asking why they chose what they did. It just sounds like I have no reason to change. RLeVan
I don't know, 8Meg resident with 512Meg of RAM doesn't result in performance loss. If you add up all the resident progs that you use, it really starts to add up. Don't get me wrong, Symantec/Norton is a good company and they provide decent products. Personally I like Ghost, hard to find a better program than that.

Coach Williams
I was only asking about AVG, since it got slammed in an earlier post. AVG is the best free AV IMHO Combo'ing is best but Norton doesn't play nice with others Norton's definition file is much more advanced than others The active protection is unmatched ________ More important than a powerful AV though is SpyWare, AD-aware & malware protection.....the suckage there is even with great scanners stuff gets through......
