He's going to rearrange, but Gibbs and Saunders both said that JG will have input. Besides, they have the same basic stuff. That's why they used KC games as a measure against other teams. Both offenses are VERY similar. The tempo is going to change a bit though.

I want to see winning football. Gibbs is a bonus.

The idea that Gibbs has no control of the offense is incorrect. He will give Saunders enough autonomy to put his stamp on it and see how things work, but Gibbs' selected someone from his coaching background for a reason. Additionally, Gibbs is still the Head Coach and therefore has the ultimate say in the decision making. Not to mention the role of team president. If things don't work out, Saunders will have his assignments changed to something else or will be encouraged to find another opportunity elsewhere. With that said, I think he will work out amazingly because he is as detailed and organized as Gibbs.

No way he gave up his job. Not even close. He CHANGED his job significantly. Now, instead of being the overall head coach and de facto offensive coordinator, he will be more equally involved in the strategy/planning of ALL phases of the team. He is taking a big step back from the offense, and will be even more involved in the GM aspects of his job and the overall HC aspects of the team.

But don't fool yourself. He is still the head coach, and still will retain final decisions on all on-field matters. Even with Williams operating the defense, you better believe Gibbs had PLENTY to do with the handling of the LaVar situation this past season.

Gibbs is a brilliant man. He has great football knowledge. But more than that, he is an unbelievably good managerial talent and is excellent in motivating and handling people. If you don't realize that, consider what he did as a raw rookie going into NASCAR. He will have more time and energy left for THAT area of his expertise. Because he does not have the ego problems most head coaches do, he was able to make this move. It is a great move for the team.

I see Gibbs as Head Coach/President of the Redskins.

He is assembling a crew and "delegating" all phases of the operation similar to his doings at Joe Gibbs Racing..... his job this time, is to oversee and guide the entire Skins "football" operation top to bottom.

If he does his job well, as we all hope he does, he should be able to "retire" from the Redskins leaving the organization in excellent shape and with his "stamp" on it.....for years to come.

This is what a good manager does. He cares enough about the Skins to consider their future. He comes in, puts his imprint (back) on the organization, then brings in talented staff that will balance innovation with a regard for traditional Skins football. That should put us in good stead for years to come.

Thank goodness he's not some stubborn old coach who's not open to progress...

I don't think he gave up his job at ALL. I believe he feels that in order to DO his job correctly...he had to give up the play calling so he could focus his energy elsewhere...in areas that needed the most improvement. The man is a genious...and this move is brilliant. Whatever Joe Gibbs touches turns to gold...whether it's football or NASCAR. This is just another example of his prowess abilities to effectively manage. Only good things will come of this...

Gibbs is giving Saunders control of the offense which is a good thing because

a- Saunders is one of the best offensive minds in the game

b- Gibbs has gotten too conservative on offense to some degree

c-Gibbs can spend his time tweaking special teams, personnel, and D a little bit

It just shows Gibbs' knowlege of the game. He is aware enough to realize that hiring Al Saunders to improve his offense is just what the doctor ordered and it shows that Gibbs has character as well.

Also, his job will be less hectic and that could keep him in DC longer.

People need to chilllll......

The "new" Gibbs regime copies that of the Patriots "Dynasty" regime.

First of all, Belicheck(sp) of the Pats, structured his staff the same way. Crennel was the D coordinator and Charlie Weiss coordinated the O. I think that worked out OK, dont you? 3 Super Bowl rings? They featured BB on NFL network's "In their own words" and he basically said that he focused on all the details regarding everything. He focused on what to do in what situations. He was like the CEO and he had managers below him.

Secondly, back in the glory days....Petibon was the Defensive coordinator for Gibbs and Bugel was the Offensive coordinator. http://www.redskins.com/team/cprofile.jsp?id=32

Now whether Buges did all the play calling I cant answer but Gibbs can co-exist with an Offensive coordinator and Belicheck was the most recent HC to have two coordinators as well.

I'm almost inclined to argue that Gibbs is a better coach now than he was during his first tenure. Hiring Saunders is a clear example of how his experiences operating a NASCAR team have caused him to evolve.

For those of you who don't remember, Gibbs called every play during his first stint. Scheming took the bulk of his energy.

What he really seems to be a master of now is building "team cohesion". . . which in the long run is the most important factor in building a winner.

Adding Saunders to the staff allows him to delegate the "nuts and bolts" work to someone he trusts and leaves him to devote the bulk of his energy to "team building" matters.

Think about it . . . 24 months ago, the Redskins were a mess and a laughingstock. Media: "JG is washed up and hiring him is a publicity stunt doomed to failure"

24 months later, Media: "The Redskins are a serious contender for a SB next season"

We all knew he could do it, and here it is, two seasons later and our team has emerged from over a decade of cellar dwelling to serious contenders.

In my mind, adding Saunders is an admission by Gibbs that Breaux and Bugel really aren't offensive coordinators in today's NFL. This move allows him to add someone who is a better fit for the role without offending his old buddies.

This also gives the Redskins some insurance (in terms of a future head coach) if Williams decides to leave within the next 2 years for a head coaching job elsewhere.

Don't kid yourself into thinking that when the the games begin next fall and Gibbs is on the sidelines that he won't be in complete control.

Gibbs cares less about what the average person outside of Redskins park thinks than you realize. He appreciates us for being great fans and supporting the team, but that seems to be about it. As it should be.

He likes being underestimated. For a man of his fame, do you not find him one of the most humble individuals in his interviews?

People outside of Redskins park have no idea what the coaches are responsible for. They think Musgrave was there to introduce the shotgun only, yet I'm sure he and Gibbs, Breaux, Burns, Williams, Bugel, Blache, etc bounced all kinds of ideas off of one another, and set up ways to implement those ideas.

Gibbs will still be the head coach. Whether Eagles fans or Dallas fans think he is becoming some kind of figurehead simply shows how little any of us really knows about the chain of command at Redskins Park.

Now he's more like Parcells or Belichick -- especially when he had Crennell and Weis. I thought Lenny's made-up quote from an owner -- "Now what will Gibbs do?" -- was hilarious and transparently vicious in light of the quantity and quality of coaches that manage a team and do not generally call most of the offensive or defensive plays (Vermeil, Parcells, Belichick, Cowher, Billick, Saban). No ones asking them: hey Bill Cowher, you have Ken Whisenhunt calling your offense and Dick Lebeau calling your defense -- what the hell do you do?

Think about it for a second, but Bill Belichick in the Super Bowl years had Charlie Weis as the OC and Romeo Crennel as the DC. He was more of a CEO.

Why does everyone think he is going to be giving up his job. Saunders will be calling plays from Gibbs playbook, but I'm sure the playbook will be enhanced. Remember Saunders is a disciple of the Coryell/Gibbs offensive system. Its not like he devised a completely new offensive scheme.

The team is better with Gibbs as head coach. Just because Gibbs is not verbally calling the plays on the sidelines during the game does not mean that he has no hand in the offense. I bet in key situations, he might lean over to Saunders and say, "how 'bout this play". Gibbs is in control of this team, and the Redskins will always be Joe Gibbs's team. The motivation, heart, and class all come from one man, Gibbs. And that is more than any other coach can say that they do.
