Is our name (Redskins) Offensive?

I have a friend who aboslutely despises the Redskins not because they are a dallas, giants or eagles fan because they feel that the name is offensive to Native Americans. He thinks that I should not support the skins because of such a vulgar name. How can I convince him that the name is not offensive and should be kept. Any ideas, I need all the support I can get in protecting our rightful name.

And let me guess, this person's skin color is WHITE. That's mostly who is doing the ****ing. Just as the last guy said, they are white, "politically correct" liberals. Take away whiny politically correct liberals and Illinois doesn't have to change their "vulgar, obscene and ultra offensive nickname "Fighting Illini." Just throw him a box of tissues and tell him "GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!"

Well, when it come right down to it, our nickname does has been commonly used as a racial slur against American Indians. I'm far from offended, but I can say, I understand the argument.

Well, then why in 2004 did 90% of the 768 Native Americans from tribes across the US polled in a survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania say they were NOT offended by all Indians nicknames for sports teams?

I would think it would be almost an honor,im only half native american(want to say indian but may get Politically corrected),and couldnt see how it would be taken as an insult in anyway, unless the team was called The washington scalpers or savages etc.Jim thorpe never complained..only ones who do mainly are like stated before, liberals with too much time on there hands and media coverage to get.But i can see where some would have problem with term "redskin",but i dont quite understand how everyone gets worked up about such things, after all if someone calls me honkey,i jus go "yup"..

If you think it's cool do this for me, the next time you see a large Native American go up to him and say " What's up Redskin!" If you come back alive maybe he wasn't offended.

I remember once I had the occassion to walk right by a large Native

American out here Funny thing though, didn't have to say what's up Redskin. He was wearing a Redskins hat. :)

Not all people are as proud of their heritage as they should be. I know if they were called the Washington Micks I would be very insulted. It's called class and the Skins obviously aren't worried about having any.

I wouldn't be so quick to question class considering the assumption you just made about the above mentioned Native American. . You know. It could just as easily be likely he didn't find the name offensive. Just like many other Native Americans, ( info somewhere in threads provided), who could be proud of their heritage.

This whole issue goes back to debating wether or not, Seminoles is a PC name for a school, or wether the "Bullets" is PC as well. As a country right now, we have to take into perspective who the people are that might be offended. As for my opinion, I don't think it's that big of a deal. I mean, how many people right now are there in the U.S that consider themselves, 100% native american.

Guest Dave959

A few years ago, Tony Kornheiser pointed out if the Redskins were to change their logo to a redskin potato, nobody could find their nickname offensive.

lol thats funny dave959... but i like the point about the Yankee comment. I men Yankee was used as a derogatory name for a New Englander American. Now it is used as a postive word. The same thing with Redskin.. a lot of Native Americans have pride in the word and it reminds them of their heritage. The name even originated as their own word used to destinguish themselves from the white man.

My mom was Cherokee, and in school I was called half breed. Ive been a Redskin fan for 38 years. You can walk up to me any time you want and ask me "hows it going Redskin"? And I will say, Im doing great cause the REDSKINS won Sunday!!!

Careful now. Maybe you aren't as proud of your heritage as you should be.

( Heavy use of sarcasm there ;) ).
