  1. So, in one year's time, the remaining average per-year cap hits on those 5 players is $107.67 mil. Insane.
  2. Exactly this. If people want to debate the merits of Trey Lance, that's a separate conversation, and a valid one. But the number of people whose only seeming consideration is 2021 is kind of mind-boggling. That single minded focus on 'got to win this year, what can we do to win more this year' with no vision for the long-term is exactly the thing that has doomed this organization since Snyder bought it. A discussion on whether to trade up fro Lance should be entirely about what kind of a QB you think he can be for the next decade and a half or so. To dismiss it entirely because we're desperate for a one-year run is just sad. At best, A Carr level QB and a bunch of luck and maybe, maybe we can be a level of team that could win a single playoff game next year. That should hardly be the objective the team should be building towards.
  3. Eh. I took it as he meant the feel of the anticipation and then the outcomes of those games. Both today and Super Bowl 18 felt like flawed teams but with offenses that just couldn't be stopped and so had to win. Then those unstoppable offenses got stopped. Could say the same about Marino in SB 19. Could say this one was the least shocking because the problems (the Line and Mahomes' toe injuries) had to give pause for what would happen. We also knew how good the D they were going against was. The games were in doubt pretty much the same period of time to the same degree, btw. Allen's run (with the score 28-9) came on the last play of the 3rd, one play after the 4th down stop of Riggo that was really the biggest play of the game. Or deciding play, I should say (Squirek was probably the biggest play). This one was 31-9 at the end of 3. Any question KC could come back ended at 13:43 when they didn't convert a 4th down. Really similar points in the game.
  4. To be fair, that's an exaggeration of what he said. Still, a guy has been a starter for three years, his team has been the best in the league over that time, to back to back Super Bowls, won one. Now he loses one in a game where he was hobbled, 4/5 of his OLine was out, and everything seemed to be going wrong. Losing to an all-time great QB. To find some lesson devaluing the QB position on that basis seems..... well, let's call it "silly".
  5. Actually that's a pretty good comp. The big difference I see is there was no reason to expect us to be shut down, but KC's OL problems at least portended some reason for concern in this one. And we knew Tampa's defense was tough. The Raiders was never much more Ethan decent. But Mike Haynes hadn't played much before the postseason.
  6. That kind of deal that would make sense would be something like: $6 mil bonus now 2022- $12 mil 2023- $18 mil 2024- $27 mil (none of that salary guaranteed) For the team, you gamble $6 mil to start. Then, instead of a 5th year option which would guarantee if he gets hurt you get a true option at the end of the year which would basically be 18 mil total for that year, but 6 of which you have basically totally guaranteed. Then, you basically have two years at option amounts that you obviously wouldn't pay if he doesn't show you a lot. If he's good, it's a decent contract. If he becomes great, then you have a big bargain. For Darnold, assuming no one wants to pick up the option (no one should), then you accept a bit of money up front with a three year deal that gives the team a price that makes them willing to keep you around if you show anything and you to still earn a lot of money. The only real downside is if you think you're going to turn into a top 10 QB you's probably lose out on something like $25 mil. But you'll still be a FA at a young enough age to cash in mightily anyway. Maybe he'd take a deal like that, maybe he wouldn't. Maybe somebody will agree to the option. But I don't consider dealing for him without something like that in place. You can't risk him not showing you enough but getting hurt and being on the hook for 25ish mil. The "upside" would be that he would play well enough and you'd end up paying him a huge contract right away. Which, with the gamble you're taking dealing for a guy who hasn't done anything in the NFL, isn't enough upside. Not that I'm really advocating dealing for him right now at all, but if I did, I need some kind of extension like that in place.
  7. Wow. Dan was heavily involved. Brutal stuff. Did he say anything bad about any QBs, or did he only say positives lie what you posted earlier? Because that was my point.
  8. That's nice, but doesn't change my point. If he ever has any interest in coaching again, or think he might at some point, he's going to be careful and measured in what he says, so as to not burn any bridges.
  9. Even if I had some level of interest in Jay's opinion (I don't), he's going to speak like a guy who wants to coach- he's not going to be very critical of any current players. He's just going to basically say he likes everyone, because he doesn't want to close any doors.
  10. I never said he was, but I'm also not silly enough to judge individual players solely by their teams' performances. Carr has won a lot of playoff games, btw?
  11. And it's not only the QB position. I think the organization might spend themselves into a short window (hopefully I'm wrong). To me Scherff is a really good G. Not really dominant, but top 5. But he misses a lot of time. If they give a guy like that the biggest interior linemen contract in the league, it's not going to be money wisely spent. The rumor I heard was that they were going to sign Jon Allen to a massive extension, like 17 mil per year. Giving our 4th or 5th best DL that kind of money means we're probably a few years from 40%+ of our cap going to the DLine. At some point, you make choices. The board seems filled with people saying "gotta keep everybody" and at the same time talking about a 2-3 year window. Yes, that's the kind of trap we're going to be stuck in if we choose to step into it.
  12. It's just my opinion, which isn't worth anything-. But a couple of years ago 4 QBs went high. My favorite of the group was a toss-up between Mayfield and Darnold (I ws likely wrong about Darnold, and certainly about Allen. To me, Fields is about that level of prospect, and he's my 4th this year.
  13. You'd do that kind of deal if you like 2 of Fields, Wilson and Lance enough to do it. If there's only one you value enough to make that move, you'd have to wait until draft day and make sure he's there.
