SALARY CAP SET AT $177.2 MILLION

    Q.  When does the 2018 free agency signing period begin?
    A.  At 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 14.

     Q.  What are the categories of free agency?
    A.  Players are either “restricted free agents” or “unrestricted free agents.”  A restricted free agent may be subject to a “qualifying offer.”  A restricted or unrestricted free agent may be designated by his prior club as its franchise player or transition player.

    Q.  What is the time period for free agency signings this year?
    A.  For restricted free agents, from March 14 to April 20.  For unrestricted free agents who have received the May 8 tender from their prior club, from March 14 to July 23 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later).  For franchise players, from March 14 until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season, November 13.  For transition players, from March 14 until July 23.  After July 23 and until 4 p.m. ET on the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season, November 13, the prior club has exclusive negotiating rights to unrestricted free agents and transition players.  If the above-listed players do not sign by November 13, they must sit out the season.

    Q.  What is the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?
    A.  In the 2018 league year, players with three accrued seasons who have received a qualifying offer become restricted free agents when their contracts expire at the conclusion of the 2017 league yearon March 14.  Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more accrued seasons.  Upon expiration of his 2017 contract, an unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any club with no draft choice compensation owed to his old club.

    Q.  What constitutes an “accrued season”?
    A.  Six or more regular-season games on a club's active/inactive, reserved/injured or reserve/physically unable to perform lists.

    Q.  How do the free agency rules apply to restricted free agents?
    A.  If a player with three accrued seasons has received a “qualifying offer” (a salary tender predetermined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players) from his old club.  He can negotiate with any club through April 20.  If the restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because the qualifying offer entitles it to a “right of first refusal” on any offer sheet the player signs.  If the old club does not match the offer, it may receive draft choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer.  If an offer sheet is not executed on or before April 20, the player’s negotiating rights revert exclusively to his old club.  In addition, prior to the start of free agency a player who would otherwise be a restricted free agent may be designated by his old club as its franchise player or transition player.

    Q.  What determines an unrestricted free agent?
    A.  A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired.  He is free to sign with any club, with no draft choice compensation owed to his old club, through July 23 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later).  At that point, his negotiating rights revert exclusively to his old club if by May 8 the old club tendered the player a one-year contract for 110 percent of his prior year’s salary.  His old club then has until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season (November 13) to sign him.  If he does not sign by that date, he must sit out the season.  If no tender is offered by May 8, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.

    Q.  What determines a franchise player?
    A.  The salary offer by a player’s club determines what type of franchise player he is: exclusive or non-exclusive.
An “exclusive” franchise player – not free to sign with another club – is offered the greater of (i) the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of the end of the restricted free agent signing period on April 20; or (ii) the amount of the required tender for a non-exclusive franchise player, as explained below.
Article 10, Section 2(a)(i) of the CBA sets forth the methodology, known as the “Cap Percentage Average,” for calculating the required tender for a non-exclusive franchise player:
The Nonexclusive Franchise Tender shall be a one year NFL Player Contract for (A) the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position . . . at which the Franchise Player participated in the most plays during the prior League Year, which average shall be calculated by: (1) summing the amounts of the Franchise Tags for players at that position for the five preceding League Years; (2) dividing the resulting amount by the sum of the Salary Caps for the five preceding League Years . . . ; and (3) multiplying the resulting percentage by the Salary Cap for the upcoming League Year . . . (the “Cap Percentage Average”) . . . ; or (B) 120% of his Prior Year Salary, whichever is greater . . . .

If a club extends a required tender to a “non-exclusive” franchise player pursuant to this section, the player shall be permitted to negotiate a player contract with any club, except that draft choice compensation of two first-round draft selections shall be made in the event he signs with a new club.

    Q.  How many franchise players and transition players can a team designate each season?
    A.  A club can designate one franchise player or one transition player among its potential restricted or unrestricted free agents.

    Q.  Can a club decide to withdraw its franchise or transition designation on a player?
    A.  Yes.  A club can withdraw its franchise or transition designation, and the player then automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent, either immediately if the tender is withdrawn after the start of the 2018 league year, or when his 2017 contract expires if the tender is withdrawn before the start of the 2018 league year.

    Q.  What is the salary cap for 2018?
    A.  The salary cap is $177,200,000 per club.

    Q.  When must teams be in compliance with the salary cap?
    A.  At the start of the 2018 league year, which begins at 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 14.

    Q.  If a team is under the salary cap at the end of a given season, can the team “carry over” room to the next season?
    A.  Yes.  A team may carry over room from one league year to the following league year by submitting notice to the NFL prior to 4:00 p.m. ET on the day following the team’s final regular-season game, indicating the amount of room that the club wishes to carry over.

    Q.  What is the maximum amount of room that a club can carry over?
    A.  A club can carry over 100 percent of its remaining 2017 room to its adjusted salary cap for 2018.

So, yeah it's just the first Pre Season game which I've grown to call "Talent Evaluation". Even so, most fans weren't going into this game worried about the passing game. The two bigger issues were the run game as it became non existent early into last season & the Redskins struggled to put together a threatening ground campaign. The other issue was the pass rush without a true NT (which this scheme doesn't really use) & the run defense, especially up the middle.    Here, I decided to go back & re-watch just the run game for the First Half as the starters were done after that. Keeping in mind that the left side of the line was still backups. So, buckle up your chin straps because here we go.       On the first run the backup left guard is blown up & pushed back into the play and then into the RB.    Next run in the same series draw up the middle.  Matt Jones is pretty much picked up by one leg as he's in stride & pushed/thrown down to the ground.    First string is now out    Left Guard 61 gets stood up. 76 stood up & pushed back. 85 gets a great leveraged push forward while 84 is manhandled backwards.  Marshall gets clotheslined in the backfield.    Paul in at Fullback with Marshall at RB. Paul hits the hole 5 yards in front of Marshall & the hole closes behind him RG already out in space while RT is pushed back closing the hole. Marshall tries to bounce it out to the right & sheds the first one & brought down by the next two tackles.    Thompson in at RB. Hits the hole that gets opened between the RG & RT & brought down by a LB before he can make any progress forward.    Marshall in at RB. Run to the right & 13 is getting pushed back as McCoy is handing off to Marshall. The line had a lane to the right sealed off for a second or two. 82 & 13 are both on the outside right & pushed back which opens a hole for the LBs. Marshall has nowhere to go.    Kelly up the middle. Quick, instant opened lane against the the DL. Nearest LB is 3 yards from the line of scrimmage while Kelly is taking the handoff at five yards back. The difference is Marshall is already in motion, running to the handoff while the LB is still deciding where to go as at this freeze frame it could still be play action. Kelly is actually hit by a different LB on first contact & then immediately buried in a pile up. 19 called for unnecessary roughness for a negating 15 yard penalty.    Kelly in the backfield on 2nd & 20. RG & TE cross to the right side behind two WRs crossing to the left side. Pitch to Kelly to the right. 83 & 69 now in motion to hit the second level. The two WRs are now at the middle of the field blocking off pursuit from the left side. Kelly comes up behind the RG & TE who are outnumbered 2-3 by LBs. The two LBs simply split around 83 & hits a wall of two LBs as the third piles onto the gang tackle.      The biggest issues standing out to me (besides some unfriendly camera angles making it harder to identify a few jersey numbers) were Moses holds. A lot. The OL seemed to be simply getting out powered/muscled when it came to opening running lanes. All of this is fixable especially if use Paul more as a pass catching TE opposed to a blocking TE.
If I were to hand out an award for their performance, it'd go to Brandon Scherff. That guy is simply a mauler when he's out in space to open up the second level in the run game. He's showing why Scot McCloughan took him in the First Round last year.

Last year the Redskins home opener was 57,013 which was roughly 20,000 empty seats. And the Redskins had a 1-0 record

Two years ago, home opener attendance was announced as 78,658.

This Sunday, the Redskins have their home opener in a Week 2 Divisional matchup against the 1-0 Dallas Cowboys.

It's been well documented all over the web this week that the Redskins Front Office does not want to be caught dead, much less alive, wearing the gold on gold Color Rush uniform. Last week through this past Tuesday, ESPN 980's & former Redskin Tight End, Chris Cooley had been saying the team would buck the system & wear their all white look for Prime Time in Dallas. On Wednesday, he changed his report to it being the burgundy on burgundy look at this time. Most likely because it was being reported that Dallas will be wearing their white on white look. At this time, nothing has been revealed as being the final look the Redskins will be wearing for Thursday Night Football.

Take a look at the three options for the team to wear, then vote in the poll above for the one you'd prefer to see them wear.

In the past, the white on white look is probably mostly associated with the Gibbs 2.0 era & the "5 In A Row" runs to make the Playoffs.

The burgundy on burgundy look while seeming like a good thing on paper, when the team finally debuted it, it was instantly associated with being awful. Mainly because I don't think they ever won a game wearing it & were embarrassed by the Steelers the first time they wore it.

The Color Rush gold on gold look so far has only been seen either in promo pictures from Nike or digital skins in EA's Madden.

The 2nd half started with Moses being downgraded to out with an ankle injury as the Skins Offense managed to make it to mid field before stalling out. Oh & Dak came back throwing garbage to start their 3 & out drive. Dallas would go on to feature Alfred Morris on their next drive. Evidently since Dak couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, they started to just hand it off. The Third Quarter ended just like the First one did. No one scored.

However the Fourth started with a Dak to Dez TD from their 15 yard line. This put the Skins down 24-7. With the recent Cousins comparisons to Brees, this was the time for him to turn it on & takeover the game. Cousins took the Offense 87 yards to the endzone on their next drive. This put them down 24-14. Dallas played ball/clock control on the following drive where the Skins Defense managed to get called for having12 men on the field. A few plays later & Dallas was in the end zone. Again. They went 75 yards & used up over 6 & a half minutes. Skin down 31-14 with 4:55 to go.

Down 17, the Redskins start to display a gripe I’ve had with them all season, no hurry up. Guys are taking their time getting to the line of scrimmage. Kirk ends up throwing the INT. And to add insult to injury they’re called for personal foul, half the distance to the goal. They punched it in to go up 38-14 which also ended Cousins night & gave the last few minutes to Colt McCoy to run the clock out.

The Redskins have now fallen to 5-7 & been swept by both the Eagles & the Cowboys this season.

    Yeah....

The Redskins have opened their 2019 season with two losses. Both against Divisional foes. Now they get to close out Week 3 at home on Monday Night against the visiting 1-1 Chicago Bears. The Bears don't have much of an offense but seem to have what may be an elite defense.

On the flip side, the Redskins have a developing passing attack and a disastrous defense. The Redskins haven't had a Defense this vanilla since Mike Nolan received his ice cream. Oh, and the Redskins already have more guys on IR then any other team this season.

Will the Redskins finally put one in the win column?

As usual, poll closes at kickoff. Go vote!

This Sunday the Redskins open their season on the road in Filthadumpia. *

The Skins are on a streak of actually winning their last three road openers.

On the flip side, the Eagles have a four game win streak over the Skins.

Something's gonna give this Sunday. Who keeps their streak alive when it's all said & done.

Pro Bowl Left Tackle Trent Williams had a 4 game suspension announced shortly after the Redskins managed a rare tie with the Bengals last week in London, England. The fanbase immediately errupted into pissed off comments all over the web from ES to Facebook to the Twitterverse. Nearly everyone assuming it was a weed violation, which would be his second. However it was later released that Trent actually missed a test, which per the 2016 Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse is the same as failing a test. In 2014, the NFL/NFLPA revised the Policy in part to lessen the severity of sanctions for marijuana use. The Policy spells out escalating penalties for repeated marijuana tests. Let's take a look:
After a first positive, a player is referred to a treatment program & tested more often. Subsequent violations result in 2 game fine, a 4 game fine, & the a 4 game suspension. Here's the problem with Trent's 4 game suspension. According to this, Trent should have only been hit with a 4 game fine, not a 4 game suspension. After the violation, an NFL PA attorney that was acting on behalf of Trent, agreed to a penalty equivalent for a third offense (4 game suspension). The NFL PA attorney took the suspension, without knowing Trent had never received the 4 week fine, which again, is what he should have received. And now, it can't be appealed or adjusted.

    Greetings Humaniods.
This week we're in either Motown, Detroit Rock City, or the Motor City depending on your tastes.  Today your 4-2 Washington Redskins, Defenders of the NFC East come to town to bag the 3-3 Detroit Lions. Unfortunately, due to the airlines moving my flight back tonight up two hours, this will probably be short, sweet, & incomplete as there's a travel delay warning from road construction back to the airport as well. So my halftime adjustment will be getting out of downtown Detroit so I can make it home tonight.

    TARGET ACQUIRED

    ANNOUNCEMENT OF INACTIVES

DETROIT – The Washington Redskins have announced the following inactives and lineup changes for today’s game against the Detroit Lions:

The Redskins declared the following players as inactive:
o   No. 2 QB Nate Sudfeld
o   No. 19 WR Rashad Ross
o   No. 35 CB Dashaun Phillips
    o   No. 45 S Josh Evans
o   No. 60 OL Vinston Painter
o   No. 72 DE Anthony Lanier II
o   No. 86 TE Jordan Reed

No. 85 Vernon Davis is expected to start in place of Reed at tight end.

The biggest shocker there is Harris is active at WR at expense of Ross. Harris was activated from the Practice Squad earlier this week.
Based off of the analysis & stats I had posted earlier this week here on the Blog, I expect the Lions to come out trying to establish the run while mixing in a few short passes on 2nd down or 3rd & long situations. They don't really throw deep a lot with Megatron retired nowadays. And they really haven't been able to get Golden Tate going out of the stable.

Today, I'm expecting a win. And I'm expecting Cousins to ball the eff out here in front of his friends & family. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fully sipping the Kool Aide yet. But I am close. A win here today will having me taking another swig of it though. Also, making their undefeated on the road return are the Championship White jersey & Burgundy pant combo.

And now, here's some words from Murf.

Here's the play description from the NFL's Game Book:

The Ref claimed that Hosley's heels were on the line. However, from the field level in the end zone, I watched Hosley plant himself right in front of the Goal Line. Here are photos I took of that play. In this series of photos, whe you zoom in, you can see a thin line of green turf between the back of his heels & the Goal Line.

    So this just happened.

Cardinals RB David Johnson just signed his extension & is calling for a Cards win to start their season. Now that he's got his pockets straight will he be playing with a purpose to prove he's worth it? And will the Redskins newly stacked D Line be prepared to show that the Cardinals just wasted their money? Tune in tomorrow, same Skins time, same Skins channel...

One more time before the Bye.

Last week, I went through & watched both the previous Raider games before they came to town to get made to look like a high school JV team. This week I had thought about doing all 3 Chiefs games before heading off to KC, however due to time constraints I’ll be skipping their Week 1 upset of the Patriots and Week 3 against the Chargers. So, on the docket we’ve got their Week 2 matchup which had the same storyline as the Redskins’ Week 2 game. Skins had Gruden vs McCoy & this one has Reid vs his former Assistant Coach in Doug Pederson. Reid was 8-3 against former assistant coaches going into this game. Here we go….

First thing that comes across is this Arrowhead crowd is effing LOUD already & they haven’t even kicked off yet. Eagles kick it off into the end zone where Thomas brings it out. Jeez he hits a hole & looks like he might take it all the way, then gets tripped up. Thirty yard return gets flagged for Offensive Holding so they’ll start at their own 21.

In their opening drive, KC gets 4 yards on the ground up the middle with Hunt, converts that 2nd Down with a pass to their TE Kelce for 12 yards, then goes with a 3 TE set & a short pass to the right sideline to Conley for 7 yards. Alex Smith takes his deep shot downfield to the right to Kelce for a gain of 44 yards- about half of that was YAC.

This was their fourth play & was set up nicely by the last three out routes. It reminds me of when Reid was in Philly coaching against a revolving door of Redskins coaches. He’d usually have a shot deep in his opening drive that the other team wasn’t ready for & he was usually successful. Reid tends to script his first 15 offensive plays, running different plays out of the same formations. Occasionally he’ll throw in something you haven’t seen on tape or haven’t seen in a long time. And if you don’t or can’t adjust to it, he’ll keep on going to it. That’s how they upset the Patriots in Week 1.

Anyways, back to their opening drive. They follow up the 44 yard game with an incomplete pass, a 6 yard run by Hill off the LG, & another incomplete short pass to the right. Cue the FG kick for 3. Eight plays for 73 yards. Every play this drive was out of the Shotgun.

Chiefs take the next drive after an Eagles Field Goal & a touchback at their 25. It’s a seven play drive, which gets us to the end of Reid’s 15 scripted plays, all from the Shotgun. The drive starts, like the opening drive, with a run. However this time it’s to the left side for 1 yard. The opening run was up the middle. It’s back to Kelce to the right for 3, a pass to Hill to the left for 14, short pass to the right to Hunt (Hunt made four guys miss, he had to be gang tackled to get him down) for 16, then an incomplete pass to Hill deep down the left side into the end zone . Smith overthrew him by a hair. Hunt off the Right Tackle picks up 2 on the ground, Smith with another incomplete pass this one intended for Kelce, & the Chiefs punt it away for 39 yards into the end zone for the touchback. So, that’s Reid’s 15 scripted plays. In each drive he started with a run, took a shot deep downfield, ran everything out of the Shotgun, and didn’t pull any trick plays out of his bag of tricks. That’s their offense for the First Quarter that resulted in a 3-3 tie.

Chiefs start their third offensive drive, now in the second quarter, with an incomplete pass over the middle to Harris but Philly is called for Offsides so they pick up 5 yards the easy way. Hunt runs to the right on a stretch play for a loss of 1. Pass to Hill for 4 yards. He gets blown up by Douglas immediately. On 3rd & 2 the Chiefs switch it up & run Wilson up the middle for a gain of 4. KC used a lot of misdirection on that play to try to spring him through the hole so he could burst it downfield. They even hd a WR come back around to fake an end a round. The more you go back & watch it, the more impressive that play gets.  Next snap, KC takes a loss of 5 on a False Start. Still in the shotgun, Alex Smith scrambles up the middle until he gets pushed out at the KC 45 for 8 yards. Doesn’t matter as there’s offsetting penalties so they’re still at their own 37 with a 1st & 15. Smith picks up 4 yards on the right side &. Alex Smith gets sacked on the next snap for a loss of 5 yards. Two steps forward, two steps back. Smith keeps it again, this time he picks up 4. 2nd & 11 & for the first time all. Game Smith is under center & not back in the Shotgun. 2WR/2TE set Smith back to pass looking for a screen to the running back as the pocket collapses like a cheap tailgating tent in the wind. Sack costs them 5 yards so at 3rd & 16 Smith is back in the Shotgun, he dumps it off on Wilson at the right. Eagles D was guarding the 1st Down marker. They rushed 3 & dropped everyone else back to the marker line. Chiefs have to punt. Still 3-3.

Chiefs are now on their fourth drive with 2:25 left in the first half.  Smith is back in the gun & hands it off to Hunt who picks up 2 up the middle. And it’s the 2 Minute Warning. Smith unloads over the middle for Kelce. Smith barely avoided another sack there. It’s a 3 yard gain & KC burns a timeout. It’s 3rd & 5 with 1:26 to go until Half Time. Smith back in the shotgun, can’t find an open receiver as the pocket collapses again & he eats a sack. Loss of 3 yards & KC is forced to punt it away again. But first the Eagles take a time out. Chiefs punt it away & on the return, Sproles makes a few guys miss then the ball get popped out of his hands & the Chiefs recover the fumble. Sproles was nailed by the long snapper who had a textbook tackle, put his shoulder on the ball to cause it to pop out of Sproles’ hands. GREAT Special Teams play. Chiefs ball at the Philly 24 with 1:06 on the clock. Smith back in the shotgun takes yet another sack this one for a loss of 6. 31 seconds left, Smith passes complete to Kelce for a 9 yard gain. KC takes their second time out. 3rd & 7 with 26 seconds left.Smith rolls left & is run down at the sideline. He throws this one away. Barely. Eagles had him dead to rights. Chiefs are held to another Field Goal. It’s 6-3 with 17 seconds left in the half. Eagles missed a 30 yard field goal to end the half.

So far in the First Half, it’s been more of a Defensive game as the score indicates. The Eagles have held Hill in check, which has stopped some of KC’s explosiveness. A deep shot to Kelce on the opening drive & the turnover on Special Teams have been their two best plays. Let’s get to the Second Half offensive drives….

Philly runs 6 plays to open the 2nd half before having to punt so the Chiefs take over at the 13 after a fair catch by Hill. From the Shotgun it’s a 12 yard pass to Wilson, 18 yards to Hill, 11 yards to Hunt, then Hunt up the middle for 1, a pass 1 yard pass to hunt, and then Smith takes another sack. This one is for a loss of 5. Chiefs to punt. Again. Hunt has been held to 6 yards on 9 attempts.

Next drive starts after the Eagles get it in the End Zone for the game’s first touchdown. Smith, on a keeper, picks up 12 yards. Though he needs to learn how to slide instead of going down head first. It’s Smith to Conley for a gain of seven, then Hunt losses a yard on the left side. Smith connects with his favorite target again & Kelce gains 12 yards. 1st & 10 at the 47. Chiefs are now 3-9 on 3rd downs. Still in the shotgun, Hunt takes the handoff & EXPLODES though Philadelphia like a hot knife through cream cheese. 53 yard touchdown run. Hunt finally got to show off his speed. It’s 13-10 Chiefs.

Chiefs take the field back after Philly answered with a Field Goal making it tied at 13 & into the 4th Quarter. Chiefs Special Teams take a 71 yard kickoff  and return it for 40 yards.  The Eagles Defense steps up & holds them to a three & out this drive. Chiefs only gained 6 yards on one play. So what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Because as the Eagles street moving down the field, the Chiefs get a turnover by picking off Wentz. KC takes back over at the Philly 31. Smith to Hill for 7 yards, then another Smith scramble to the left where he’s pushed out of bounds at the 20. Gain of 5. Smith connects with Kelce for another 5 yards. 2nd & 5, Smith feeds Kelce again, this time it’s for 15 yards & a touchdown. 20-13 Chiefs. The touchdown pass was another play where they had an obscene amount of motion/misdirection. It was similar to a play they ran in Week 1 against the Patriots.

Now with the momentum, the Chiefs Defense holds Wentz & the Eagles to a three & out. After the 8 yard punt return, KC takes over at the 44. Smith starts this drive with another keeper but it’s a loss of 1. Putting the pedal down, Smith goes deep to Conley down the right sideline for a gain of 35. Chiefs are already in Field Goal range & it’s 1st & 10 at the Philly 21 as KC takes a time out. 4:36 on the clock.  KC comes out of the timeout with Smith under center, hands off to Hunt who runs to the right for 4 yards. Back in the Shotgun, Hunt takes it up the middle for 3 more yards, then picks 12 yards on a run to the left side. Ball at the 2 yard line. Hunt up the middle for the score. Kick’s good & it’s 27-13 KC.

Philly takes a little over two minutes to go 75 yards in 13 plays for their final touchdown. Philly recovers their own insides kick, KC burns their last two time outs & Wentz’s final pass is incomplete as the clock runs out.

Even though the Chiefs are undefeated, they’re still beatable. I think had Philly not had the turnover on Special Teams they could have had the win here. The keys here are similar as to what the Redskins Defense did to Oakland last week. Get constant pressure on Smith, contain Hunt- do not let him rip off a big 50+ yard gain, and flow to Kelce when he gets the ball. Also don’t let KC’s motion/misdirection turn into a learning lesson for a young secondary.

If you’ve enjoyed these weekly reviews of the upcoming enemy of the week, drop a comment below. If you’re not a fan of them, say so below as well. Doing these are ~ahem~ extremely time consuming so if enough of you dig it, I’ll try to keep doing them. And if not, I’ll free up at least two days time during the week.

So, with about half of a former roster coming back home this week, it feels like maybe Bruce shoulda penciled in the 49ers as Homecoming/Alumni Week. Though that whole “Homecoming” theme never really went our way, typically ending in a Redskins loss. Freshly minted first time Head Coach Kyle Shanahan brings his surprisingly 0-5 49er team to FedEx Field this Sunday. Now, there’s just no way this week I have the time to review all 5 of their games, so I’m picking two games at random. First up is their Week 2 game at the Seahawks, followed by their week 4 loss to the Cardinals. The 9ers lost both of these games by 3 points each. And both of these games were on the road, just like tomorrow’s will be for them. Here we go…

    AT SEATTLE

First thing that stands out is the 9er Defense is kinda like wet cardboard. They allow the Seahawks to start the opening drive at their own 25 & march it all the way down to the 9ers 7 yard line before finally holding Seattle to a Field Goal. Seattle even converted a 4th & 1 at the 9ers 41 yard line during this drive. With a no gain run at the 7 yard line followed by two incomplete passes, it was more the Seahawks stalling theirselves out then it was the Defense finally making a stop.

The Offense’s opening drive, Kyle surprisingly calls a run to the right to start with. It’s on 2nd Down that he calls his shot deep that goes incomplete. On 3rd & 1 they run it & get half of it. Unable to get a yard the 9ers are forced to punt. Had the deep ball been more accurate, they’d still be on the field.

Second drive, second play & the Defense gets a sack for a loss of 1. Defense holds them to a 3 & out.

On SF’s 2nd Offensive drive, it gets a bit cray cray. Here’s the Official description of what happened:
(5:39) (Shotgun) B.Hoyer pass short middle intended for C.Hyde INTERCEPTED by B.Wagner at SF 43. B.Wagner to SF 36 for 7 yards (M.Goodwin). FUMBLES (M.Goodwin), recovered by SEA-R.Sherman at SF 36. R.Sherman to SF 36 for no gain (C.Hyde).
Like I said, cray cray. To make it even more screwy, Russel Wilson is sacked for a loss of 8 on the Seahawks 1st Down the very next play. The Defense is trying to make a lot of substitutions this drive, Seattle responds by picking up the pace on Offense. On 3rd & 9 Seattle drops a sure TD in the end zone & are force to kick another field goal. They’re not getting TD so far but the Defense isn’t really stopping them either.

One play into the 2nd Quarter & SF takes their first timeout. 3rd & 3 & they don’t convert. This Offense can’t get anything going. Seattle takes over after the punt, on their own 3 yard line. Seattle picks up 4 yards on two plays on the ground. Wilson to Lockett gets them a 3rd Down conversion. The 49ers Defense should have gotten off the field there but couldn’t.

At this point, SF has had 8 plays for 17 yards & their T.O.P. is a measly 3:57 while on the flip side, Seattle has had 34 plays for 127 yards with a T.O.P.of 15.11.

Offensively, Seattle got a few more plays off before the Defense finally made a stop.

9ers next drive opens with a 14 yard pass to Kittle. Kittle’s a good sized rookie & one to keep an eye on how Kyle uses him. Hoyer throws a mistimed pass out of bounds & gets called for Intentional Grounding. Garçon’s first catch this game is for 6 yards. 9ers once again end up punting. Then the Seahawks end up running 4 plays & punt. The 9ers Defense had started out as turnstiles but have now started to tighten up a little bit. Especially in the run game.

Let’s see if the 9ers can get anything going this drive….Hoyer pitches to Hyde on a run around to the left for a gain of 6. 2nd & 4 at their own 17. And there it is. Hyde, on the ground breaks loose for a gain of 61 yards. And guess who the only 49er is downfield blocking for him, our guy Garçon. Oh & it’s started raining in this game too. Seattle’s Defense holds the 9ers to 3 & out & SF settles for a field goal. 6-3 Seattle at the Two Minute Warning.

Seattle goes 3 & out & San Fran finishes the first half off by hitting another field goal to tie it up at 6-6. At least it was a quick half. So far with only 2 quarters in, this is the worst Kyle Shanahan offense I’ve seen since John Beck tried to run it. Hoyer isn’t a starter. He’s been inaccurate enough to maybe be a 3rd string QB. Maybe. I wonder if Kyle tried to coax Grossman out of retirement before going with Hoyer. Hyde, an every down back with good size, is probably the best weapon they have on Offense. And Garçon has only had one target so far.

The 9ers open the Second Half with seven plays, a timeout & a punt. (Res next offensive drive starts at their own 6 yard line. Hyde gets 1 yard uno the middle then Hoyer is sacked for what appeared to be a Safety but the officials spot the ball inside the 1. Hoyer then passes for a gain of 10 & are forced to punt from the 11. A bad punt put Seattle at nearly mid field. They manage to waste it & go 3 & out.

San Fran with the fair catch at their own 13. Hoyer to Garçon for 11 yards. Then it’s Hyde off the LG for 4 yards followed by Hyde getting 5 yards off of the RT but there’s a 10 yard penalty for Offensive Holding & they lose 10 yards. Hoyer’s next pass is again, incomplete. On 3rd & 16, Breida gets 10 yards up the middle & San Fran once again punts while I try to stay awake watching this disaster.

Seattle takes over with a run & two incomplete passes just so they can punt it back to the 49ers. Hoyer hits Goodwin for a gain of 12 as the 3rd Quarter ends. Hoyer starts the 4th Quarter with a 8 yard pass to Hyde that gets them to the 50. Hyde gets another 6 on the ground, Hoyer incomplete to Hyde. Next it’s Breida again for gains of 11 & 13, & 4.The 9ers take a timeout & follow it up with incomplete passes to Goodwin & Garçon.   Gould hits a 34 yard field goal & the 9ers take a 9-6 lead.

Seattle answers with a 10 plays for 82 yards in 4:30 for touchdown but miss the extra point. Seahawks take the lead back at 12-9. After the kickoff there’s 7:01 left on the clock in the 4th. San Fran goes 3 & out. With 4:47 left, Seattle does enough to get to the Two Minute Warning, then they continue to eat the clock by taking 3 kneel downs to end it.

Like I said at the Half, worst looking Kyle Shanahan Offense I’ve seen since John Beck. Even old, broken down McNabb ran it better then this. And yeah I know SF is in a rebuild, but Kyle has enough of his guys that have been in this system long enough, a quality QB would get it going like it should. Hoyer was 15 of 27 for 99 yards passing. His longest pass was 14 yards, he had 1 INT, a completion percentage of 55.6% & a QB Rating of 48.2. Hyde had 15 attempts for 124 yards on the ground & caught 3 of 6 passes for 19 yards. Both Goodwin & Garçon had 3 catches for 26 yards each.

Let’s see if they improved any two weeks later against the Cardinals….

    AT ARIZONA

To start off, the Cards are missing 3 of thier starting O Line so SF should, on paper, get a lot of pressure on Palmer this game. Oh & RB David Johnson is out this game for the Cards as well.

The Cards take the opening drive from their 25 to the SF 4 where on 3rd & 4 Palmer gets picked off at the Goal line for a touchback. San Fran takes over at the 20 with 8:16 left in the First Quarter. Hyde gets 2 on the ground followed by two incomplete passes from Hoyer to Garçon & Taylor. # & out & they punt. So the Cards with the mentality of “anything you can do, we can do better” are also held to a 3 & out & a punt. From their 24 Hoyer hits Goodwin for a gain of 18. Hyde gets 11 on the ground. Two positive plays in a row, could they be gaining momentum? Yeah, no. Brieda looses 3 yards & Hoyer passes incomplete. Then again…Hoyer connects with Taylor for 12 then gets 3 up the middle. Followed by incomplete passes to Paulsen & Goodwin. Hoyer to Taylor for 4 yards & the 9ers hit a 49 yard field goal. 3-0 49ers.

The Cards answered with a 9 play 63 yard field goal. They had a touchdown but it was reversed.  Tied game at 3-3. Cardinals passing game is looking REALLY good so far.

San Fran starts the next drive at their 15. They pick up 6 yards on two runs, ALDRICK ROBINSON SIGHTING- Hoyer complete to Aldrick for 16 yards. SF goes No Huddle. Breida stopped on the ground for a loss of 2. Hoyer goes deep left to Aldrick for a gain of 24. Hoyer complete to Taylor for 11. Last 3 plays were No Huddle. Hoyer to Garçon for a gain of 6 & they burn a timeout. Hoyer in Shotgun & he gets sacked, loss of 11. (Res are forced to kick a 39 yard field goal, it’s good. SF takes the lead at 6-3.

Arizona starts at their own 25, get to the SF 39 before stalling out & having to punt it away. SF’s Defense has started getting to Palmer. If they weren’t sacking him, they were knocking the snot outta him. (The 49ers get 3 plays off- a run, an incomplete pass, & then Hoyer throws a pick & it’s Two Minute Warning time. Three plays later the Cards tie it up with a 43 yard field goal. 6-6

Next drive, Hoyer completes to Kittle for 14 yards then has 3 incomplete passes & they punt it away. The Cards stall out with a 3 & out to end the 1st Half.

The 49ers start the 3rd Quarter with a great drive. Hoyer to Garçon for 16, ?Hoyer to Kittle for 21 yards, Hyde for 14 on the ground, Hoyer to Juszczyk for 5, Breida for 8. Hoyer to Breida an 11 yard touchdown that gets nullified due to Offensive Pass Interference. Hoyer gets sacked on the next play for a loss of 10. Hoyer complete to Hyde for 2, then incomplete to Taylor. Gould hits the 47 yard field goal  & SF takes a 9-6 lead.

Nine plays later the Cards answer with a 50 yard field goal. Tied game at 9.

SF starts at their 25. Hyde gets nothing up the middle. Hoyer complete to Aldrick for 12. QB SWITCH - HOYER OUT, BEATHARD IN- Hyde goes up the middle for a gain of 15. Hoyer back in & passes incomplete to Kittle. Breida gets 6 on the ground, Hoyer to Taylor for 12, SF called for Offensive Holding, Hoyer incomplete to Aldrick, Hoyer complete to Hyde for 7 then incomplete to Garçon. 4th Down. 48 yard field goal is good 12-9 SF leads.

The 9ers next drive starts at their 20. Hoyer incomplete to Aldrick. Brieda stopped for a loss of 1 up the middle. Hoyer incomplete pass to Brieda & they punt it away.  The Cards go 50 yards in 11 plays & kick a 32 yard field goal to tie it up at 12. Clearly these teams do not believe in touchdowns.

There’s 7:06 left on the clock & to quickly sum it up, neither team really does much of anything. This game stays tied at 12-12 & goes into OT.

SF starts OT on Offense & get a field goal to go up 15-12. Carson Palmer aint having that. Eight plays later he throws a touchdown pass complete to Larry Fitzgerald for the 18-15 win.

Maaaaaaaaan…..The 49ers are not a good team, but I’d bet they could still beat the Giants.
  17. TK
During pre game warmups there was some trash talking from both teams as they went at each other on the far side of the 50. It didn’t last long before it was broken up.

The Chiefs are currently huddled up at their 10 while the Redskins are back to running drills inside their 20.

With tomorrow's first Divisional match-up against Dallas, I wanted to take a look a few things & see if anything stood out. Going by the stats from Week 1, here's what I think I'm thinking.
First thing that stood out is that Witten continues to be a QBs best receiving weapon. Followed by Beasley. And Dez? Last week he was at the bottom of their receiving list, with 1 pass out of 5 for a whopping 8 yards, only beating out the RBs. Take a look.
    DAL - RECEIVING TAR NO YDS AVG LG TD J.Witten 14 9 66 7.3 17 0 C.Beasley 12 8 65 8.1 15 0 T.Williams 4 3 34 11.3 14 0 G.Swaim 1 1 21 21.0 21 0 B.Butler 2 1 16 16.0 16 0 L.Dunbar 2 1 16 16.0 16 0 D.Bryant 5 1 8 8.0 8 0 E.Elliott 2 1 1 1.0 1 0 A.Morris 1 0 0 -- 0 0 Going by these stats from last week, I think Witten will continue to be a match up problem for us tomorrow. I also think that Beasley & Williams will have trouble with Norman & Breeland, whether one is assigned to cover the same guy all game or just a side of the field all game. In past match-ups, Breeland has owned Dez and Dez is no A. Brown. Dallas should have a hard time passing on us tomorrow.
Speaking of passing, there's not that much film on Prescott yet. That said, he's still a Fourth Round picked Rookie & last week against the Giants, he played like it. The thing that stood out to me watching him last week (for perspective though I was watching 3 different games at once) his footwork is atrocious. He does that same RG3 thing where he'll pass while in the air after completely leaving the ground. Though Prescott's playing behind perhaps the best Offensive Line in the League, he gets the time to at least find & dump it off to Witten. Still though, his numbers last week were pretty pedestrian. The decent thing was putting up over 200 yards passing with no INTs,
    DAL - PASSING ATT CMP CMP% YDS YD/AT SK/YD TD LG INT RT D.Prescott 45 25 55.6 227 5 0/0 0 21 0 69.4
They also protected him by only having him run twice. For 12 yards. And that brings me to their rushing attack here:
DAL - RUSHING ATT YDS AVG LG TD E.Elliott 20 51 2.6 8 1 A.Morris 7 35 5.0 13 0 D.Prescott 2 12 6.0 11 0 K.Smith 1 3 3.0 3 0 A first round pick in Elliot averaged 2.6 yards a carry. I don't think that's going to get it done in the NFL. Though he did score their only touchdown, so he's got that. Morris in limited action clearly was able to run better though. I think I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas actually featured Morris against us tomorrow, at least for quarter. Averaging 5 yards a carry is what gets it done in the NFL so Elliot should be taking notes when Alf is in.
So with 101 yards rushing & 227 yards passing they proved they can move the ball with a rookie QB & RB. Tomorrow should prove different though. I think they'll struggle to complete passes over 12-15 yards but get the dump off, underneath stuff to Witten. And they'll have success in the run game, especially if they feature Morris, but I doubt Jerruh would allow the rubbing that salt in the wound move instead of showing off his shiny new first round pick in Elliot.
    Anyways, that's what I'm think I'm thinking.
    I think.
Agree? Disagree? Sound off in the comments below, but one thing I know is
