Something you want believe about Joe Gibbs!

I just read this and still can't believe it. http://www.nfl.com/teams/coaching/WAS Joe Gibbs played Tight End, Offensive Guard and Linebacker at San Diego State! Now, I can see linebacker maybe but Joe Gibbs at Guard and Tight End? I like Gibbs as well as anyone but I could never imagine Gibbs playing Guard or tight end. He is just not big enough. I always seen him as a DB. I still can't believe it. I just see no way of him playing these positions in college at his size. What is Joe Gibbs 5' 10" maybe 180lbs?

Len Hauss was a 5-time Pro Bowl Center at 215 lbs. It was a different time.

It was the 50s. Sam Huff was considered a monster at 220 pounds back then. He was a defensive tackle at West Virginia.

Here's another. Chuck Bednarick is still considered one of the toughest players ever. He was the last two-way player in the pros. He played center and middle linebacker. And he nearly killed Frank Gifford with a hit in 1960.

He topped the scales at 230.

I'll bet Coach Gibbs at that size just gave a tremendous effort and played his guts out....

I guess I never realized how much the game has changed. I knew players have gotten bigger and better but not this much bigger.

I just can't picture Joe Gibbs as a football player, period.

One more. Chuck Noll was a guard on the Browns of the 1950s, which was the best team in football then. He weighed 218.

And Gibbs may look like a librarian, but he was apparently quite an athlete. He was a national champion in raquetball in 1976.

And when you look at Steve Spurrier, he hardly looks like an athlete. But he won the Heisman Trophy.

I knew about the TE and OL positions. It's the LB that stuns me. Joe Gibbs as a linebacker? His psyche doesn't seem to fit that mold. Unbelievable.

I can believe it. A person of his age loses a lot of size over the years. My father in law's neighbor and best friend played center for the Huskers in the early to mid 60's. You would never know except for his enormous hands and grip of steel. He is much the same size as Gibbs right now. Hard to believe, but time takes much muscle mass.

yeh he definitely seems like he had the size for those positions. He must be at least 6', if not more. He also used to weigh more.
