Thoughts on QB

Bucs92, er..yes, I am a transplant. But I've been in Florida longer than the Bucs. And no, despite living two years in Miami back in 1981-82, I can't stand the Fish either.

I'm a born and bred Redskins fan even though I only spent the first 8 years of my life in Arlington. After that my family moved to the Virgin Islands and I lived there almost 15 years. In addition, I've lived in West Virginia and California but NEVER have I considered abandoning the Redskins regardless of their record.

Ru, it is certainly fascinating watching you attempt to avoid the obvious by saying that Westbrook's 99 was surprassed by Keyshawn in 98 in one area, and in another in 97 and in a third in 00, a fourth in 62 and a fifth in 41. What are you talking about?

By the numbers:

Westbrook's best year: 65 catches, 1191 yards, 18.3 average, 9 TDs.

Johnson's best year: 89 catches, 1170 yards, 13.1 average, 8 TDs.

While no one doubts Johnson has had a superior career, the fact remains that Westbrook has had a single season better than any single season from Johnson. It's not hard to see that. Just look. Keyshawn is more of a possession type guy, so he's generally going to catch more balls. Westbrook is more of a stretch the field type guy, in terms of yards per catch, so he generally alters play in that fashion.

Even arguing against this statement shows how desperate you are. Unlike you, I'm capable of admitting a fair point and moving beyond. Everyone sees that this isn't an point of exaggeration here. Even you I'd wager.

Kurp, you make a good point here. I do think we all, as fans, worry about the future of the quarterback position. I think the team has to be somewhat hopeful that Banks evolves into a late bloomer, pretty much like every QB to escape Tampa smile.gif. Sorry Ru, had to be taken smile.gif.

But, that's a serious developmental question for this team that presents a great deal of difficulty down the road if someone doesn't step up and become a player.

with free agency, things are too fluid in the NFL to know for sure who is going to become available next offseason.

we can't really worry about the qb position right now other than to evaluate George and Banks. at the same time we need to learn as much as we can about Gardner, Lockett, Westbrook, Alexander, McCants, etc....to get a feel as to where the WR and TE positions are.

If we do bring in a veteran qb next year we need to clean house on some players that have overstayed their welcome and underachieved. But as high draft picks we have to really work hard to evaluate players such as Westbrook and Alexander before we release them.

Ex-Redskins have had a habit of coming back to haunt us in recent years with their new teams from Trent Green to Brian Mitchell, Rich Owens to now Rodney Williams who got off a 91 yard punt in the Giants' opener.

Well, the thread didn’t quite go as I had hoped but what can you do eh?

Yeah, I know that there is a lot of time between now and the start of next season and there is no way to predict what may or may not happen. It just irks the hell out of me to know that we have let Green and Ferrotte go in the past few years and either of them IMO would be preferable to what we have now. I guess it’s silly to play coulda, shoulda, woulda. We have to play the cards we have. Which makes Kurp's point.

We will just have to look at who will be available when FA starts next year. I’d put big money on neither Banks or George being around this time next year. We’ll see. If we look to the college ranks we have David Carr, Jason Thomas and Kurt Kittner who might be worth a look. I think even if we go the vet route it would be worth drafting a QB early. I would just rather have a rookie to develop who isn’t quite the project Sage is.

Bulldog – I agree with you that we will have some more housecleaning to do next year. I think it will happen regardless of what we do at QB. If Westbrook has a decent season and his salary demands aren’t out of line he might stay. My bet is he will be gone by this time next year. That’s just my gut feeling.

I’m still on the fence about Alexander. He shows just enough to make you think he’s going to be great then he ends up just being just ok. I thought the phrase that was associated with tight ends was “sure handed”. He needs to show us something more. You can only live so long on promise.

I’m not in panic mode or anything about this season but I'm not kidding myself either. I just have to look ahead. If the QB problem we have here wasn’t driven home by watching that 1st game I don’t know what will. I question the idea that the receivers weren’t running the right routes. If that was the case then why was Marty so pissed at Jeff? It would stand to reason that he would have been on the receivers instead. Maybe he was and I just didn’t see it.

right now, Fred Smoot is really the only major player acquisition that seems to be paying dividends for Marty Schottenheimer.

a quick review of the offseason acquisitions shows some players that just haven't contributed very much so far in camp, preseason or the start of the regular season......

Matt Campbell, Ben Coleman, Donovan Greer, Michael Bankston, Dorian Boose, Donnell Bennett.

Others such as Tony Banks, KiJana Carter, Dave Szott, Keith Lyle were brought in as emergency pickups where there were gaping holes in the roster in either starting or backup jobs.

Now, I expect Gardner to come on and I think he will. Szott and Banks may end up being contributors here out of plain desperation with the poor performance of others.

But still, you expect your #1 and #2 picks to come in and contribute these days with free agency. Perhaps Smoot is ahead of the usual rookie learning curve in that regard and Gardner is merely where he should be, feeling his way.

But that doesn't obscure the fact that the veterans on this team are not contributing much in the way of performance or leadership right now.

And none of the veteran free agents has stepped up to show they were steals in the offseason either.

About that QB question smile.gif

I believe after having our place reserved for us in the picking between 5-10, we select a DT and a QB, after trading down for a mid #1 and and top #2. (2 is our lucky number so far, yet so is #1 smile.gif .

Now who??? is the deserving QB that proves the system does work, when exercised with a grade A pick. No Shuler's need apply.

We take a QB FA that has "overall" better than average NFL skills, hopefully in a Mark Rypien mode or likewise as the solid steady for the newbie to learn from:

Now who??? would that be?

I have a hunch that some players will move on creating room to get this QB, I know will be available come the end of the season or at least is dealt to us in a combo of a future

2 pick 2003 or later, and a couple of players that we feel we can replace immediately. I will not reveal him, since I am so paranoid that a strange owner in Dallas will send some geek to peek and then they will seek. Dam* been listening to too many rap records laugh.gif
