scottb
If they only give up a few draft picks over 3 years for Mariucci, then the Bucs
coaching search, which looked to be a clown caper, will be a success....damnit.
I think a good coach is well worth a few picks. What would you have given for Gibbs?
TennesseeCarl
Mariucci's done a nice job with the 49ers - I'm curious why Walsh doesn't like the guy.

Those draft picks are going to make the 49ers very, very tough in the coming years. They'll rebuild their offensive line this year and maybe add another quality WR.

I'm not sure what the Bucs will do. They still have to figure out who's their RB (hint to the Bucs - it's nobody on the current team). But Mooch would be a credible selection for them. riggins44
From what I've heard, there is some major personality conflicts in San Fran. Walsh doesn't
like some of the things Mariucci has done. It
seems to be a power struggle.
JimboDaMan
This may be an example of the good Lord watching out for the blind and the stupid - and I think the Glazers qualify on both counts.

Parcells was not a good first choice, and I never understood what Marvin Lewis was expected to do that Tony Dungy could not. Neither would have been the coach to move this organization the next step up the ladder. Gruden would have been interesting but Al Davis made it plain that wasn't going to happen without giving up the store.

Mooch just might be the man. Although if he's going to assume GM powers as well that might be somewhat over his head. But his offensive experience and general HC abilities are a better fit for Tampa than the guys that got away.

So who becomes HC of the 9rs if Mooch is cast off?

[ February 17, 2002, 08:15 PM: Message edited by: JimboDaMan ]
OrangeSkin
Why didn't Mooch take the ND job if he was so desperate to get out? I'd like to think he's staying with SF, because he can do some great things with them.
Tommy-the-Greek
He seems to be a good fit for tampa. Jimbo poses a good question. Who will coach the niners? Will walsh be on the sidelines again? Will he hire Dennis Green?
PCS
Well, isaid it before and I'll say it again, IMHO Mooch and assistants has done a fine job in San Francisco. He and Owens have problems(though I think Owens would have trouble with anyone beside himself), and yet he stil calls his number. Just an example. There has to be some type of power struggle / clash of egos going on there to cause Mooch to want to leave and the Niners opening the door for him,(politely though). You would think that after this season's showin they would want to keep him.

If there is indeed a clash of egos or a power struggle there, then shame on them. I put them right there with the Glazers. for the continued success of the team and for the good of the orgainization(after several years of struggle I might add), these things should be checked at the door. Pretty petty stuff if you ask me. (obviously Walsh hasn't)
Glenn X
If Mooch goes to Tampa, my bet is on Niners GM (and former UCLA head coach) Terry Donahue filling SF's head coaching position.

NavyDave
Mooch is part of the inserta coach history of the 9ers.

Uh How many Super Bowl trophies did he bring?

He did a good job coaching but it looks like Walsh and Donahue to an extent should get the credit for rebuilding the team in a short time.

I remember Mooch whining about Walsh trading their #3 to us for the two #1s and mid round picks. Ernie5
I like Mooch as a head coach, but a GM? Nah. I also wouldn't give up those draft choices for a guy who hasn't won or been to a super bowl. Hell, I wouldn't have given the picks to get Parcells like the Jets did & likely regret to this day. That's just too much to give up -- you wind up robbing that very coach of the tools he needs to succeed in the long term. The Glazers have really dug themselves into a hole with this one. I say hire Charlie Weis, keep yr picks and be freakin' done with it.
Ernie5
I also wouldn't equate Mooch with Joe Gibbs. A good coach, but Gibbs he ain't.
Henry
I don't necessarily think Mooch is a bad fit for Tampa, but honestly, what has he done that Dungy hasn't?
Dr. D
Seems Mooch was a "feint" after all

a real public one.

gave'em leverage against AL Davis.

they get their man after all (after Parcells)
