Jethrodsp
In my last post in the overrated coaches thread, I listed the ten best active coaches and the ten best of all time. Here goes: Top 10 coaches of all time: 1. Joe Gibbs (I think we all knew that was coming) 2. Lombardi 3. Shula 4. Halas 5. Landry (pains me to say it, but Im trying to be unbiased here.) 6. Walsh 7. Madden 8. Parcells 9. Lambeau 10. Noll Honorable mention: Bill Belichick (its only a matter of time and wins before he gets up there) Top 10 Active coaches: 1. Joe Gibbs 2. Belichick 3. Parcells 4. Fischer 5. Reid 6. Mooch 7. Gruden 8. Billick 9. Dungy 10. Lewis *these lists are subject to change after any given season... Jethrodsp
Hold up... I cant believe I forgot about Vermeil. Put him at #5 on my active coaches list and it now looks like this. Top 10 Active coaches: 1. Joe Gibbs 2. Belichick 3. Parcells 4. Fischer 5. Vermeil 6. Reid 7. Mooch 8. Gruden 9. Billick 10. Dungy
Eagles_Legendz
Everyone forgets about Vermeil. There is no way someone can argue that Dom Capers or Jon Fox or Andy Reid for that matter, is a better coach, or has accomplished more than Dick Vermeil. TheDane
My vote: Gibbs, Belichick, Parcells, Vermiel, Fisher. In that order.
Henry
I wouldn't put Gibbs as the top active coach just yet. He probably should coach a few downs before we decide he's the very best today's NFL has to offer. Until Gibbs proves otherwise (not that I don't think he will) I'd put Belichek, Vermiel, Parcells, and maybe Gruden, Fox and Reid ahead of him. In that order. Jethrodsp
Henry- Of course you're right, but Gibbs as the top active coach is a sentimental pick more than anything. I have little doubt he will prove us all right in the end. Hail Skins.
DJCrash34
I have trouble putting Reid up there in the top 5 active coaches only on his inability to win the big game and get to the super bowl. Yea he made three consecutive trips to the NFC championship, but the whole point of the game is to win the super bowl and if you're not getting it done in the end then it doesn't matter how the rest of the season was. Henry
Reid's a tough call, because he can't get over the Championship game hump, but then when you look at the players he's had to work with over the past few years, especially this past one, you have to give him credit for making something out of practically nothing. His offense is made up of a QB and a bunch of marginal players. His defense this past season was chock full of injuries. And yet his guys go out and bleed green for him every week, and they win a lot more than they lose. I think this season, in which he finally has a bonafide star WR, will tell us a lot about Reid. But either way I still think he's a top ten coach. You don't get to the Championship game thre straight times by accident.
