Trading down makes a lot of sense. The picks between #15 and #50 are where you get the most bang for the buck (talent per dollar spent). You also get more players who are on their draft contract, which helps stay under the cap. Also, you are less likely to have training camp holdouts, and players who think they are better than they are. It's the way New England is building a dynasty, and we should do it too. Unfortunately, Danny likes to make a splash, so we haven't done it this way so far, but maybe Gibbs will see the advantage in it.

For the people who are getting all worried about us giving up the second round pick as part of the Bailey deal, don't fear. I've been saying all along that Joe is going to take precautions to make sure that we get Portis, and that we don't come away with less draft picks in the process. There is a reason why we are talking to New England, provided the information is valid.

We only had three picks a season ago and there is no way in hell that we are going to go into april with 2 picks. Joe has too much respect for our organization and is too good a coach to sacrifice the long term success of the franchise, in the process of building the roster to his liking.

For those of us who think he's only concerned about winning now and totally ignoring the future, give your head a shake. Do you honestly think that Joe Gibbs wants to leave this franchise is shambles once he completes his second coaching tenure? There are reasons why Ramsey is going nowhere and there are reasons why we will still come out of the Portis situation (provided the deal happens) with the same amount of picks that we have as of today. Gibbs has an eye to the future as much as he does the present, regardless of the way things appear right now.

Actually, that's exactly how we got Ramsey. I believe we traded down twice before picking him and ended up with ten picks in that draft.

Actually, this is a lazy and incorrect statement. Aside from trading down repeatedly and getting Ramsey (who was hardly a big name when we drafted him in 2001), most of our moves last off-season (really, all of them save for Coles) involved either O-linemen or other role players. I would guess that Snyder made the Coles move b/c he thought (and would be right) that we needed WR help in a bad way and that Coles, only 25 or 26 at the time, was better than anyone coming up in the draft. Now, Bolden had a great year but (a) who knew that? Even for the Cards, he was the second receiver they picked and (B) as good a year as he had, he doesn't have Coles' ability to terrify a defense and instantly change a game. The Redskins have shown the ability to move up or down depending on their perceived needs. Any trade we make this year -- especially with Gibbs aboard -- will be for the same sound reason(s).

I'd take that trade in a heart beat. 2 first round picks and a second rounder? Hell yeah. We need (in this order) DE, DL, CB, TE, S and we don't have a lot of cap room. Late first round will still have some of these available for much cheaper then a #5 and 3 picks go a lot further then 1.

everyone keeps talking about what you all need. but dont expect to get it all in just one offseason. it may take 2 or 3 or you may never. and just have holes like every other team that still finds ways to win superbowls.
