Coaching staff.

Is anyone noticing that the coaching staff appears set to take on MAMMOTH proportions? Simmons as offensive line coach, or maybe ASSISTANT offensive line coach. Grimm as offensive coordinator, if it happens, and tight ends coach. We're going to take twice as long as other teams to roll out on the field because our staff may be twice as large. Any worry I had over the age of the staff is going away knowing the numbers will be so huge you'll have a very good mixture.

I like it so far. Good blend of the familiar and experienced with the new but familiar with the the "present' game. Whatever the hell that means. :) No doubt this team will be as prepared ans any when it hits the field. That said, anyone catch what Mort said on ESPN a while ago? Said Gibbs and Williams went through a chess game on the chalkboard to see how Joe could do agianst the modern defenses and vice versa. Now does that put an awsome picture in your mind or what?

"Okay", says Joe, " I see you've got 4 down but creeping up with your ROLB and your strong Saftey. So I've got this play called with the offense shifting here and here. This should mess up the read being made by the Backers and the...", (sound of chalk on board in background".

"Hmmmmm", says Williams, " good call, but I'm showing this, )scratch, erase), but doing this".........

:D

That is a pretty picture. You know when you watch these shows like Matchup or Playbook that have coaching tape, you can really see how formation, defensively, influences the offense. You can see how showing certain looks causes the line to check. And when it's done right, you can see the line check to a blitz that's not coming and open up a MASSIVE gap for the real blitz coming the other way.

It really drives home just how important coaching is. It IS chess. Everyone has pretty good pieces. It's using those pieces and getting them in the right position to make plays that matters. I'd give almost anything to sit in the room for a week just watching them work :).

Learn more in that one week, if one is lucky, than one could in a lifetime reading books and watching tapes, dvd's, or tivo of games. Wow. Oh, and to be fair, safeties/third down coach was Jackson's title in Buffalo. Not sure what he would do with the Redskins. Not that Williams would ahnge things but.......

Don Breaux - Running backs

----------- Wide receivers

Rennie Simmons - Tight ends

Coy Gibbs - Quality control

Gregg Williams - Defensive Cord.

Tim Krumrie? (maybe) - Defensive line

The age thing doesn't bother me. I think it's great that our coaches get a paycheck and Social Security.

It will be neat to again see a game plan carried out, the Skins attacking another team's weakness and those great half-time adjustments.

Redskins | Granted Permission To Speak With Bills' Assistants - from www.KFFL.com

Sat, 10 Jan 2004 08:14:34 -0800

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has requested and received permission to speak with Bills special teams coach Danny Smith and safeties coach/third down specialist Steve Jackson about joining the Washington Redskins coaching staff. Both assistants were members of Williams' staff during his tenure in Buffalo.

================================

This probably means they are as good as signed. After all they coached under Gregg Williams, so he should already be familiar with what they bring to the table. :)

Another example of Gibbs' desire to limit his shortcomings of a "returner" to a different NFL. He's surrounding himself with quality and experienced coaches to "check" some of his decisions.

In a year or two (as Gibbs becomes more comfortable in his new position), I wouldn't be surprised to see this coaching staff become smaller.

Although, Gibbs set himself up in NASCAR to eventually be pushed out of the picture. He's probably following the same approach again.
