Second Suspicious Package Found

Packages To Be Blown Up, Tested

D.C. police say a second suspicious package has been found in the Eastern market area, about 25 yards from where another package was found earlier Friday morning.

A bomb threat had been called in to the lot used for the flea market.

The second box is being taken to RFK stadium to be blown up.

FBI spokeswoman Debbie Weierman said the first package was blown open and is now being checked to determine its contents. She said initial tests shows no evidence of chemical or biological elements.

To be safe, D.C. police asked Metro not to run trains in the area.

Parts of Metro's Orange and Blue lines are shut, along with several blocks surrounding a lot in Northeast Washington -- all because of the bomb threat.

D.C. police said they received numerous threatening calls this morning, regarding a suspicious package in a lot at Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue, Northeast.

The Orange Line has no service between Eastern Market and Minnesota Avenue, while the Blue Line is closed between Eastern Market and Benning Road.

Metro says there is some shuttle bus service, but traffic in the area is a mess.

The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are at the scene along with District police and Metro Transit police.

Here is the latest, the fact that the FBI is involved is a little alarming.

Police Point To Suspect In Bomb Threat Case

Boxes Blown Up, Tested

D.C. police are looking for a suspect vehicle that might be connected to two suspicious packages and bomb threats that were made Friday morning.

Authorities have put out a lookout for a Chevrolet C-10 pickup truck with DC tags "AQ 0220". There's no information about the color of the vehicle.

D.C. police say the two suspicious packages were found about 25 yards apart in the Eastern market area.

Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile said at around 5:30 this morning, police got a call from a man claiming to have put an explosive device on a playground in the 300 block of Oklahoma Avenue, Northeast. A suspicious package found there was neutralized using a water cannon. The FBI says initial tests show no evidence of chemical or biological substances were found inside.

Police said a second package, that appears to be a briefcase, was found in the 500 block of Oklahoma Avenue, Northeast. It was to be taken to parking lot "B" at RFK Stadium to be disrupted.

An FBI spokeswoman tells NBC4 several bomb threats were called into police early this morning.

Police are closing Benning Road from 21st Street to Minnesota Avenue. Metro still has no trains running on the Orange Line from Eastern Market and Minnesota Avenue, while the Blue Line is closed between Eastern Market and Benning Road. Metro tells NBC4 shuttle buses have been dispatched to help commuters get to where they need to go. Metro officials also said the rail closings have had a ripple effect all the way into Virginia, causing extensive delays.

The FBI, ATF and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are at the scene along with District police and Metro Transit police.
