I told you so.............

Back in April I told you that 7 UDFA's would make the team. :D It turns out that 5 made the team. Brad Banks didn't get a fair shot IMHO, because he didn't get a chance to show what he could do in preseason games. But 5 out of 7 aint bad. :nana: Eat your heart out Bulldog. And you guys thought I was just a pretty face.

Our Magnificent Seven? - Seven UDFA's who should make the team posted on April-29th-2003 08:33 AM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although I would have preferred the Skins to have drafted a defensive player with their # 3 pick instead of Dockery and punter Andy Groom with their # 7 pick, I can understand the reasoning why they did not and live with their other choices for now. Especially after evaluating the undrafted free agent signings. Seven of these players could have been drafted and should win roster spots with the current team, providing us with excellent depth. They are:

QB - Brad Banks - 5-11 201 4.76 forty

To be honest I had never heard of Hamran, so I will have to leave it up to SS as to his ability and whether or not he makes the team. With Brad Banks the Iowa quarterback, however, I was hoping the Skins would draft him all along. Yeah I know he is only 5-11, but anyone who has a TD-INT ratio of 26 to 4, deserves a long look. Plus he is an exciting scrambler, ala Eddie LeBaron who was a 5’ 6” quarterback who starred for the Skins back in the late 50’s. << Is that right, Bulldog? Either way, whether Banks or Hamran winds up the #3 quarterback and the other winds up on the practice squad, the team is on the way to working with a young developmental quarterback and that is a positive. Personally I think that Banks will be our # 3 quarterback and Hamran somehow will pull a tendon feeding his goldfish and mysteriously wind up on IR for one year of film study.

OLB - Charles Clemons 6-3 236 4.69 forty 18 reps

Clemons was a two year starter at weakside linebacker for Georgia last year and came out early as a junior. Described as a tough competitor with an aggressive nature. A number of teams tried to sign him as a free agent, but the Skins landed him. Many scouting guides had him being drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. PFW’s Draft Preview states: Has NFL caliber size, speed and can be sudden. Had he returned for his senior season, he was more likely to be a first round pick.” Clemons will challenge Antonio Pierce for a roster spot and even if he doesn’t beat out Pierce, he should replace the undersized Lemar Marshall.

LB - Clifton Smith - 6-2+ 253 4.86 forty 12 reps

Smith was a four year starter at middle linebacker for Syracuse and was described as the “heart and soul” of the Orangeman defense. An All-Big East Conference first-team choice for the third straight year, registering over 100 tackles each year. He also excelled on special teams. Smith may not have the sideline to sideline speed to play MLB in the pros, but should do fine at SSLB. He should have no problem beating out the undersized Lemar Marshall from last year, as a backup linebacker and special teamer.

TE - Kevin Ware - 6-3 256 4.68 forty 22 reps

Ware started at TE for Washington last year and has been described as a late bloomer. He has good hands as reflected by 42 receptions last year for an 11.0 average and 5 TD’s. Although he supposedly does not have top-end speed to stretch the defense vertically, his 4.68 forty on Pro Day was surprisingly fast when compared to Royal who only runs a 4.97 forty. Ware should push one of our other TE’s off the roster, more then likely Leonard Stephens. He could very well start ahead of Flemister, if the latter continues to drop balls.

CB - Ade Jimoh - 6-1 185 4.50 forty 365 bench press

Ade was a three year starter for Utah State with outstanding athletic skills and is one of the strongest pass defenders in college football, being a hard worker in the weight room. In that the Skins will more then likely carry five cornerbacks this year, he has an excellent chance of making the roster, if he can beat out Lloyd Harrison. And even if he can’t. Supposedly he has 4.44 speed, although he only ran a 4.50 forty on his Pro Day workout.

CB - Brian Mance - 5-10+ 191 4.53 forty 18 reps

Mance started at cornerback for Clemson last year and had six interceptions, finishing with 12 in his career. In addition to his cover skills, he was an outstanding punt returner, with 27 returns for a 16.1 average and 1 TD. He also returned 33 kickoffs for 788 yards (23.9 average). In that the Skins have only Morton as a punt returner, Mance should make the team as our 5th cornerback.

RB - Sultan McCullough - 5-11+ 202 4.27 forty 27 reps

I have already written a lot on McCullough. Suffice it to say that if he comes in with a good attitude, he has a good chance of being our # 4 running back and a special teamer. Or he could also wind up on the practice squad. Much depends on the future of Kenny Watson. Whether Watson is kept, traded or cut.

Like last year when the team finally had draft picks with potential make the team below the 2nd round, I think the Skins scouting department has done an exellent job here. Although we only had 3 draft picks left this year, these UDFA signings more then make up for it. Hopefully these players will be our Magnificent Seven for those who remember the movie.
