HailVictory
I had the opportunity to have dinner with our beloved owner during training camp this year and I noticed he spoke casually about Darrell's impending retirement. Naively I asked Dan, "Don't you think Darrell can play another couple of years?" He smiled at Drasner and replied, "This will be his last year. We have a plan in place with Darrell. He'll have a television show next year, and plenty of opportunities to further his foundation." So, we can safely assume that it wasn't Camp Marty that motivated his decision. In my opinion, Darrell spoke with Dan and Marty during the offseason and they agreed to give him one more year and let him go out in an honorable fashion. Reaganaut
HailVictory, Care to share how you were able to pull off dinner with the owners? Did they just invite you over to the table or something when they saw you eating alone? Just interested. ------------------ 1992 fantasy commercial: Dale Hunter seated in Skins uniform # 58 slapping a football deliberately between each hand ... looks to his left and remarks "Thanks, Wilbur"... cut to shot of powerful dark skinned hands holding a hockey stick in front of his new Caps uniform..."no, thank YOU Dale." Larry
Frankly, I'd been assuming this was his last year from the time we drafted Smoot. (Unless he wanted to leave and play for, say, the Raiders). Maybe he and Rice can go to Canton together. (Darrell tries to keep Jerry away from the mike, something like that). I'd like to see more emphasis on this. Say, "Darrell Green Farewell Tour" t-shirts (proceeds to the foundation). Do Frank, Sam & Sonny need a new partner? HailVictory
Yeah, I'm no NFL luminary, so it seems odd to be hanging out with Dan, but... I am fortunate to be the brother-in-law of a certain HOF running back for the Skins. I went to training camp with him and got the red carpet treatment- kind of like a Redskins Disneyworld if you will. I've got a lot of tidbits from my experiences, but I'll relate them as they become relevant.
@DCGoldPants
What they should do is give Darrell and coaching job right now so he can be a player/coach at the same time. Then when he's done, he can be an assitant to the D. Coord working with only the CB's so Champ and Smoot can learn from a coach who can outrun them. ------------------ <IMG SRC="http://www.theotaku.com/dragonball/animated/trunks.gif" border=0>
Om
Pretty cool, Hail. Remind me to invite you "and a guest or two" to my next suaree. And tell old whats-his-name we miss him like hell on the preseason TV broadcasts.
HailVictory
Funny about his conspicuous absence from the preseason games. It's all about money really. George Michaels renewed the contract for the show, and JR was in Europe at the time. George knew he'd want a lot of cash, so he made the ecomomical decision of bringing Wilbon aboard. JR will be on the radio a lot this year, after signing deals with WTEM and ESPN radio. I'll publish his schedule if you all are interested. Om
Do it. Looks like Diesel came out ahead on all counts. He goes to Europe, while Wilbon's stuck in DC in August ... then, he gets back to find that he's now the Expensive Talent, while Wilbon is the Economical Compromise. I like it. ------------------ Beware of cunning linguist.

Terry
Hey Larry, I'm not sure I agree with your comment on drafting Smoot, because I believe that was mere serendipity. Smoot fell all the way to our 2nd round pick and I think Marty was taken by surprise. I don't think that taking Smoot was in out plans at all, but it was 'an offer we couldn't refuse' when it turned out that way. Which is ironic in the grand scheme of things. Jerruh desperately goes CB hunting in 2000 and falls on his face. We luck into perhaps the best CB prospect of the last few years. Art
Excellent story. It's been rumored for a couple of years that Darrell would be taken care of by the team after his years playing are finished. Glad to get a tiny bit of confirmation, assuming everything on face value. Thanks for sharing. ------------------ Doom is in the box.
