Somalia's Shebab claim they 'control presidential palace'

Somalia's Islamist Shebab rebels said Tuesday they had taken control of the office of the country's internationally-backed president following a major assault on the presidential palace.

"Our commandos are inside the so-called presidential office," Shebab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab told AFP. "We are in control of the headquarters of the apostate regime."

Somali presidential palace under al Shabaab militant attack

Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants pushed into Somalia's presidential palace and gunfire broke out on Tuesday, an al Shabaab spokesman and a palace official said.

"The militants have partly entered the presidential palace compound. There is periodic gunfire now," an official in the presidential palace who asked not to be named told Reuters. "I understand most attackers have been killed. No further details."

Al Shabaab confirmed they were involved. "We have entered the so-called presidential palace. We have now captured some parts of the palace and fighting is still going on," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman told Reuters.

Weird, Not sure why it started two threads.

I don't think they'll hold it for very long. (I think most if not all are dead now, though I haven't seen an official article about that)

It is worrisome that they were still able to get inside the place though, considering how things have developed in Somalia over the past years.
