On how different special teams philosophies are across the NFL:

“There’s a lot of different ways to do
things on special teams. It could be punt protections. It could be
coverage. Everybody’s got a little bit different angle, but the one
thing you want to do is make sure you’re sound.”

On his own special team philosophy fitting with Special Teams Coordinator Keith Burns:

“First of all, when you interview
somebody, you take at a look at all the different areas that he’s
coached, and he’s coached all different areas on special teams and he
teaches that to you. He presents it the way he’s going to present
it to the players. And then you’ve got to get players to play hard.
You’ve got to motivate people and you’ve got to feel good about the
people that are on your football team. When Keith was with me, he was
just like Lorenzo Alexander. He was a great special
teams player. He led by example; first guy there, last guy to leave.
He’ll do the same thing as a coach.”

I'm excited to see some new ideas on teams.  But I also think that teams is SUPPOSED to be a place where you groom players for the future while you satisfy the intent of special teams.  Danny Smith did none of this... in fact, he often kept players past their prime.  I'm honestly not sure how much of the players choice was his outside of returner and maybe one player, but the fact remains that we weren't special on special teams for years.  Let's hope we can be consistent and change field position this season.

HAIL!

I thought the quote where Shanahan compares Burns to Alexander was interesting. Hopefully Burns is able to take some the young guys and coach them up on teams so they develop as DC is saying above. I think as the team gets deeper ST's offers an opportunity to develop players, especially corners, safeties, LBers and WR's.

My apologies I thought with as much as was discussed for the removal of Danny Smith people would like to discuss the new coach and his impact on the team. Surprised the thread go no responses. hmm.

Things are a little slow this time of year. I wouldn't sweat it. Come July/August, this will be a hot topic.
