Why is sports gambling illegal?

There isn't as much incentive for teams to throw games anymore. Player salaries are through the roof compared to what they were during the Black Sox scandal. Why would a player want to risk that now?

This is from last year which talks about average salaries in each league: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ycn-10423863

So a bookie or someone would really have to offer some HUGE money to get players to throw a game.

If the only bets were on win or loss, then I might be tempted to agree with you, but the bets cover everything from win/loss to covering the spread, to yards gained, runs scored, sacks, and every other conceivable statistic which are too easily manipulated by those in the know. What's more is that players get themselves in financial hardships all the time.

Right, but like I just said to HOF44, what's stopping them now from doing this? Gambling still goes on now, granted it would be more if it were legal, but its still happening and yet things aren't be effected (at least to our knowledge).

Because politicians need issues.

Why can I go to a casino in Florida and play blackjack and 3 card poker, but cant play Roulette and Craps?

Ask Charlie Crist.

I'll do you one better, why in California you CAN play Roulette and Craps but only with cards and not dice? Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

So legalize illegal activity because people are already breaking the law? I'm not sure that logic holds up.

"at least to our knowledge", that strikes at the very integrity of the game which is more important than anything else in sports, if integrity is lost then the viewers will walk away. Look at boxing and horse racing, two sports which have nary a shred of integrity and are merely afterthoughts in the discussion of professional sports, but two sports which are the focus of the greatest amount of gambling. What is hilarious to me is the assertion that this protects sports from the perils of gambling. "They" claim legalized, localized sports gambling will lead to an increase in corruption. BS. In fact, it's the opposite. An open, legal system would allow for monitoring of bets to track high money, timely wins. The people who currently control the system are the same ones who are fixing the games. Take away their control of the system and you can slowly take away their power to affect it.

Lol nice use of the TDKR quote!

What I'm saying is that it shouldn't be illegal in the first place. Mainly because you can go to Vegas and gamble til your heart is content. Yet here in MD, I can't.

I'll go you one further, in Indiana the only casinos that were allowed were river boat casinos, but they had to leave the dock twice per day, so the casino lobby pushed to change that law, now they have to be a boat but never leave, so in French Lick (Larry Bird country) they dug out a hole and filled it with water to put a "riverboat" into in order to have a casino.

I agree completely, but there is too big of a lobby for the casinos to get the Feds to "infringe on state's rights".
