He never had the level of power that Griffey had. For the most part, he was the equivalent of Eric Davis if Davis had ever been able to stay healthy, which is pretty damn good.

Griffey won a single MVP. Bonds won 3 for a reason. He drew way more walk,s hit more home runs per AB and was better on the bases. Best of the 90s.

I'm not counting his steriod years. Without roids, he's not Griffey on his power numbers.

Let's compare their stats from 1990-98.

Bonds:

PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+

5712 4539 1000 1385 279 40 327 993 328 92 1073 685 .305 .438 .600 1.038 181

Griffey Jr.:

PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+

6182 5377 1002 1622 297 30 382 1091 151 53 703 901 .302 .384 .581 .965 152

Griffey's HR's per at bat is 7.1%. Bonds' is 7.2%. Bonds has as many runs in way less appearances, almost as many doubles, more triples, WAY more walks, WAY more stolen bases, WAY less strikeouts, a better batting average, a higher RBI per AB rate, a much better OBP, a better slugging percentage (thought Griffey was the better power hitter), a much better OPS and a better OPS+.

In that time Griffey won 1 MVP, Bonds won 3. Bonds had 8 Gold Gloves, Griffey had 9.

Bonds was just better. That said, Griffey was my favorite player as a kid and he was on the boxes of my SNES games so he's a boss. Still an all-time great.

You can't use Griffey's first couple years in the league when he was 19 and 20 to pad your argument. Take Bonds' first 4 years (age 21-24), while he was still figuring out major league pitching:

1986 21 PIT NL (Games) 113 (AB) 413 (Hits) 92 (Doubles) 26 (Triples) 3 (Homeruns) 16 (RBI) 48 SB 36 (Ave.).223 (OBP).330

1987 22 PIT NL 150 551 144 34 9 25 59 32 .261 .329

1988 23 PIT NL 144 538 152 30 5 24 58 17 .283 .368

1989 24 PIT NL 159 580 144 34 6 19 58 32 .248 .351

Not as impressive as you might expect, because he was young and had not hit his stride. You have to compare the prime years for both players.

I will get those stats but they will still say Bonds was the better player.

Bonds might have also been cheating before 1998. His career is hard to judge.

I hope not. That's be a damn shame. But I doubt he juiced back in the early '90s when he won his MVPs.

Most people think he started using steroids hardcore in 1998 when his head got swole. But he's a cheater and it's hard to trust him. The other guys on roids didn't get as big as him and McGwire did. That's just a sign they were abusing the crap out of them at that point--maybe his usage only changed. Guys like Palmeiro and ARod and Giambi and Clemens still looked pretty normal. Bonds could have been using them to a lesser extent earlier in his career before he suddenly became a video game power hitter in his mid to late 30s.

McGwire and Conseco were juicing back in 89. Seems there was a culture of abuse in the league around that time. Can we be sure Bonds wasn't using them since he's proven he's a cheater? It's hard to say with him. That's why I usually don't try and form any conclusions about his career. Same with McGwire and Sosa and Clemens. Although I do tend to believe McGwire when he talks about his time line for his steroid use after he came clean.
