GAME 1: NEW YORK JETS @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS GAME FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS SINCE THE JETS ROSTER RAID AND HAVE BROKEN IT DOWN.

THE GAMES KEY MATCH-UPS ARE:

------------------------------------------------------------------

REDSKINS 3RD REC. VS COVER 2 SCHEME.....

COLES VS ABRAHAM....BOTH KNOW EACH OTHERS WEAKNESSES...

SAMUELS VS J.ABRAHAM.....RAMSEY IS A FUMBLER.....

------------------------------------------------------------------

MARTIN VS ARRINGTON....BOTH HEALTHY..GOOD MATCH UP

BECHT VS OHELETE......"TE. NEEDS A BIGGER ROLE"

MOSS VS BAILEY......2002 3RD GUY SAYS HE'S #1 NOW.....

------------------------------------------------------------------

AS OF RIGHT NOW 10:00 EST. THE LINE IS "PK"....

AS OF RIGHT NOW 10:00 EST. THE O/U IS "53 1/2"

------------------------------------------------------------------

OVERALL THE PRESSURE IS WIN FOR THE JETS IS HUGE, THE TEAM REMAINS CONFIDENT TO THE PRESS BUT IN THE LOCKER ROOM IT'S DOUBTFUL THEY STILL FEEL THE SAME. NOT ONLY DO THE JETS HAVE TO OVERCOME THE PRESSURE TO WIN THEY HAVE TO TOPPLE THE SLOW STARTS WHICH HAVE ANNUALLY PLAGUED THEM. EXPECT A QUICK START WITH MANY INCOMPLETES BY THE REDSKINS AND MANY COMPLETIONS BY THE JETS. IN THE END EXPECT AN EX-PLAYER TO MAKE A PLAY AS SPOILER FOR THE JETS.

------------------------------------------------------------------

readers this isn't some half-@#$ biased opinion on the game i 'm leaving my email address and 2001-2002 records up to assure you i know what i'm talking about.

brice_28@msn.com

2001-163 of 256 =63.67%

2002-165 of 256 =64.45%...better than "vegasviperline"

2003-( goal 65%)

------------------------------------------------------------------

REDSKINS 24 JETS 17

------------------------------------------------------------------

Difference in the game will be our O-line mauling your weak D-line, you'll get the 1-2 punch of Martin & Jordan all night long with the outstanding play-action passing of Pennington peppered in.

The best match-up will be your strong o-line vs our strong D-line. We'll see who holds up the best.

With orders from the top to punish the Skins this one should be a laugher by the middle of the 3rd quarter.

Jets 31

Skins 10

And then you woke up in a puddle of your own pee and realized it was just a dream and that you'd wet the bed again. Poor guy.

Since when do you have a strong O line? Your best lineman for last year plays for us now.

you truly must be what your "smiley face" suggests an , a drunk fool.

the redskins defensive line my not be par, but the linebackers more than make up for them....and champ and smoot cause coverage sacks. about 3 i'd say in this game.....the jets' 3 receivers, none of which have proven to be the #1 guy won't look good against a tandam like this.

The jets' 3 30+ year old lb's can't catch canidate on a screen when spurrier calls a 4 receiver set.

the def. will be paying so much attention to the 4 recs' ,canidate or betts might as well walk past them.....

Ummmm, I don't think that was pee. That dream was waaaaaay to exciting for him for it just to have been pee.

Luca, you ever heard of Kevin Mawae, if you think Thomas is a better player than him you're on crack, McKenzie is also a better player than Thomas who was our 3rd best lineman. But I'm sure since you've seen soooooo many Jet games you'd know better.

Fabini, Szott, Mawae, Goodwin, McKenzie is a solid o-line, please explain how this is a bad o-line.

Bryce is you're content with your LB's (One good one , one old washed up one and another a shell of himself) being your first line of defense against our RB's it'll be a long long day for you.

By the way here's a little article on one of our so called old LB"s

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Sam Cowart has taken pay cut to prove to Jet fans his subpar season was fluke.

A year ago, Sam Cowart was the marquee name in the Jets' 2002 free-agent class. He showed up with a big contract and a big-time reputation, but in his first training-camp practice, he pulled a hamstring - a lame start to a mediocre season. He nearly became a one-and-done casualty.

Cowart, a onetime Pro Bowl linebacker with the Bills, was on the verge of being released last February, but he took a pay cut to return to the Jets. It was a pride thing.

"I told my agent, 'I have a lot of unfinished business in New York,'" Cowart said yesterday at Hofstra.

So he's back. Really back.

In four training-camp practices, Cowart has demonstrated his B.A. form - Before Achilles.

Before tearing his Achilles tendon in 2001, Cowart was one of the top young linebackers in the NFL. That player was seldom seen last season. Now he's hell-bent on introducing that player to his teammates and the fans of New York.

The difference is noticeable.

"He's back to his old self," said defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who once coached Cowart in Buffalo. "He's got the acceleration and he's got the burst. He's making plays all over the field. He's back to normal."

"It's night and day," cornerback Ray Mickens said. "He looks like a totally different player from last year. I know he'd made the Pro Bowl before, and he looks like he can go back again."

Cowart recorded a team-high 154 tackles last season as the starting weakside linebacker, but they were quiet tackles. There weren't many highlight plays, just two sacks, no interceptions and no forced fumbles. Amid the struggles, he set only two modest goals: Stay healthy and learn to play the Jets' scheme.

He attributed the lackluster season to unfamiliarity with a new system, a new position and the residual effects of the Achilles-tendon surgery. When Cowart watched himself on tape, it was like an imposter in his No. 56 jersey.

"Not only did I let the team down and some of the fans of New York, but I let myself down most of all," Cowart said. "I want to prove to myself I can do it. I want to let the people know the Jets didn't make the wrong decision by bringing me in."

Now that he's healthy and comfortable with the Jets' system, Cowart has compiled a lengthy to-do list.

He wants to prove he can play outside linebacker at an elite level. In Buffalo, he played inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, making for a difficult transition to the Jets.

"My goal," Cowart said, "is to make the Pro Bowl as an outside linebacker."

He also wants to become an every-down player. A year ago, Cowart, who never came off the field in Buffalo, was limited to first and second down. All told, he appeared in only 60% of the defensive plays. That will change. The current plan is to play him in the nickel package. He also could see significant action as the dime linebacker, replacing James Darling, who signed with the Cardinals.

"We're going to try to keep him on the field as much as we can," Cottrell said.

Above all, Cowart, still only 28, wants to prove to skeptics that he can be what he used to be. For the first time since 2001, his body is right. His mind is right, too.

He made a statement Monday, beating two blockers and tackling LaMont Jordan to ruin a screen pass. Heads turned. Cottrell, watching from the sideline, revealed a knowing smile.

"The fans are really going to be treated to something special," he said. "He's back. Just watch him out there."

Mawae is good, no doubt about it. He's also had the benefit of strong guards playing beside him. Let's see how he does this year without Thomas and after Szott goes down with yet another injury.

RAMSEY IS A FUMBLER

Take out the one game against Green Bay where Ramsey was clearly unprepared for the cold and fumbled 5 times, and Ramsey fumbles less than Brett Favre. He was also a rookie. If you're counting on him putting the ball on the turf to save your Jets, you might want to try something else.

:moon:

now that this has became a childs game i'd like to point out the lack of speed for all your DB's.

they can't keep up with all 4 streaking recs'

russell....4.2

coles....4.4......according to a bragging jets fan at nfl.com

johnson......4.4

gardner.....4.6

the only DB who stands a chance is aging abraham......

___________________________________________

as for smoot.....what is conway going to do...

the skins 2 starters were ranked #4 in qb ratings

and had a league low 122 catches against them.....next to tampa 114.....

don't doubt the little corners i think you'd already learned that with darrell green

I would be MORE worried about Conway getting during the pre-season yet another one of those bothersome injuries he had been famous for in his 10 year career, the kind that have kept him from finishing 7 of those 10 seasons.

if the jets do beat the Skins, it is gonna be on the ground, not in the air. That is my only worry this year, is stopping the opponents run game. I dunno though, Regan Upshaw could have a good year which would turn Smith back into the 3rd down specialist he was signed to be.
