PREGAME

Hello and welcome to ES coverage of the Wahington Redskins Vs the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bredskin live on site with Murf. It is the pre-season opener and the fans have begun to enter FedEx. It is a very wet FedEx Field. Hopefully it clears as expected.

This is my first game day coverage and I am looking forward to providing up to date coverage from Landover.

I will be watching how we compete in the trenches. The World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers are an extremely physical team at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. With the field being so wet, running game success could decide the outcome.

It should be a good test for an offensive line that has been securitized heavily by the media this pre-season. It will be interesting to see how the starting group handles the 3-4 defense of the Steelers.

After the hype of the pre-season, and last week’s sub-par performance, the front seven battle against a very physical Pittsburgh offense line and running game should be a good barometer of how we will perform throughout the season.

Check back before the game and we will update the inactives.

Solid start by the defense. A poor call on a late hit against Hall kept the defense on the field. The long drive by Pittsburgh for the TD was long. The defense had them in long situations, but Pittsburgh was able to make the right calls and get into the Redskin zones.

10-3 Steelers

HALFTIME

The first half began to look a lot like the Ravens game after the first team defense exited. The Redskins gave up several 3rd down conversions which kept the Steelers on the field. The first team defensive line was very impressive early in the game. All four starters applied pressure. Brian Orakpo continues to impress. He is stellar when rushing the passer and drew a couple of penalties.

The offense is another story. Outside of a couple of runs, they did little. Many short runs plus Campbell not being sharp, equals a recipe for disaster. Starter, Malcolm Kelly, did catch a couple of short passes. Devin Thomas also caught one, but ran a flat route and appeared to cause a late interception by Collins.

Overall, it was better performance defensively, but not much from the offense. If it wasn’t for the fake punt, it would be a shutout.

THIRD QUARTER

After a Pittsburgh three and out, the Redskins went on a 14 play 60 yard drive, culminating in a touchdown pass from Chase Daniel to Marko Mitchell. It was an impressive "jump ball" pass. The drive had several nice runs by Marcus Mason. He is having a solid game. The score is tied at 10.

Following a 70 yard kick off return, the Steelers had to settle for a 41 yard field goal.

Pittsburgh 13 Washington 10

AFTER THREE QUARTERS

The backups played much better in the third quarter. Chase Daniel led the scoring drive which ate up almost half of the quarter. The Redskin offense is moving the ball again after the Steeler field goal. The running game is on the move with Mason and Dorsey getting the carries.

Pittsburgh 13 Washington 10

FOURTH QUARTER

Following two Ziggy Hood sacks on Chase Daniel, the Redskins punted.

Fred Davis strips the punt returner and Darrel Young recovers.

Daniel hits Davis for an 18 yard TD....way to go Sleepy!!

Washington 17 Pittsburgh 13

Colt threw an interception after a lengthy Redskin drive. Dominique Dorsey was the key person on the drive, showing a very good burst. He also has impressed on special teams.

Defense comes up big and stops Pittsburgh on downs.

REFFKIN'S FINAL THOUGHTS

My first game covering the Redskins is over. It was a great experience. The mood in the locker room was understandably upbeat following a 17-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The younger players that looked awestruck last week against the Ravens, did not play that way this week. Fred Davis had huge plays back to back, forcing a turnover and catching an 18 yard pass from Chase Daniel for the go ahead touchdown. Kevin Barnes also played well giving up no catches and playing well on special teams.

Malcolm Kelly looked strong as the second receiver catching three balls and showing great hands on a slant. Devin Thomas caught two balls for seven yards, but stood out mostly because he failed to not come back on an in-route at the end of the second half. The play resulted in an interception by Todd Collins and gave Pittsburgh a chance to add a fieldgoal before halftime. In the locker room after the game, Vinny Cerrato made it a point to seek out Thomas to specifically talk about the play - saying "you needed to come back to the ball."

Marko Mitchell also played very well and had a big TD catch. He is making the most of his opportunities and may be earning a roster spot.

The first team offense ran the ball a little against the first team Steeler defense. The passing game did not get going. Jason Campbell was 1-7 in his limited time. Clinton Portis and Ledell Betts each had a couple of nice runs. Through the first two games, the first string offense has only produced 3 points. The backups excelled in the second half with the running of Dorsey and Mason, and the passing of Chase Daniel. There was improvement offensively, but concern is still warranted in the passing game.

Defensively, the Redskins played much better than they did against the Ravens last week. The front four of Haynesworth, Daniels, Griffin, and Carter produced a tremendous amount of pressure. Brian Orakpo also applied a lot of pressure coming off of the edge. He also played well in coverage and seems to be settling in at the linebacker position nicely.

Specials teams gave up more than 200 return yards....enough said.

The Steelers did have some success spreading out the Redskin defense by using three and four wide receiver sets. They were able to get some passes through a soft Redskin zone in the middle of the field. It is something to keep an eye on, as it surely will not be the last time we see that strategy. The backups and third teamers played much better today and were able to shut down the Steelers for most of the second half.

Next week, New England comes to town. Starters should play at least a half and it will be another good test for the Washington Redskins. The Redskins are certainly playing a very tough pre-season, hopefully getting them ready for the New York Giants.

I’ll be back on Friday night live from FedEx Field. Good night.

Guys,

It's moving out but will be close to game time start. I guess the good thing about the towels is they can be used to dry the seats off like before. Bad luck with those huh?

About another hour or so but what is left is like a sponge being squeezed giving up what it has.

Stay dry and keep the thread running.
