The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad, who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and each other as they seek out and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad -- in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear - protect and save - but it’s anything but easy, for the margin of error on a war-zone bomb is zero. A thrilling and heart-thumping look at the effects of combat and danger on the human psyche, The Hurt Locker is based on the first-hand observations of journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal, who was embedded with a special bomb unit in Iraq. great movie, catch it if you have the chance this weekend
Baculus
It's a decent movie and probably one of the better Iraq-related movies which have come out over the past few years. It didn't over-sentimentalize, which has been one of the problem with some of the other films. I thought a few scenes were perhaps a little "Hollywood," but it is worth watching as a war film (and in particular if you were interested in the Iraqi conflict). I don't think a great Iraqi conflict movie has yet to be released ("Battle for Haditha" was interesting due to its production technique), but I guess we'll see what's released in the future. Hooper
Excellent, excellent flick. I wish Kathyrn Bigelow directed more movies. She's a lock for a best director nomination for this.
CAPT_CHAOS47
I read about this movie in the stars and stripes...Not really interested in seeing it now but i will when i get home. For those that have seen it... is it a movie about EOD or is it a movie with hidden political views? I would like to see a movie without the political aspect and one about soldiers.. jpillian
Excellent movie. Saw it a few weeks ago after the OP's original post. From what I recall, no real political motivations in the movie. More of an EOD soldiers story. Just really, really well done. I guess the only possible "message" from the film (that I could gather) is that some soldiers that return for repeated tours seem to somehow enjoy the "high" that can accompany it: the adrenaline, the sense of accomplishment, the sense of importance, etc, etc. This was the motivation for the main protagonist of the story. I'd discredit such a theme out of hand as being uninformed, except I sort of experienced that myself after getting back. Definitely didn't think I'd feel that way while I was there, but I had a sense of that after being back for a while. :whoknows: Regardless, really good flick. Worth a viewing, no doubt. Hooper
Nothing political about this movie at all. And does a great job of showing the insanity our guys have to deal with over there.

Spartacus87
Just watched it online tonight. Pretty good movie overall I thought, I haven't seen notable movies about the the current war in Iraq so this was at least interesting for that aspect. Side note- when James is carrying Sanborn back to his room after they're up getting wasted and wrestling, there's a big Redskins banner hanging in Sanborn's room. Thought that was pretty cool. I agree. Hurt locker is a good film. Godfather, Citizen Caine, Casablanca or To Hell and Back again; it is not. I'm glad I saw it. Probable won't watch it again either on DVD, or on TV. JMS
For those that have seen it... is it a movie about EOD or is it a movie with hidden political views? I would like to see a movie without the political aspect and one about soldiers.. I didn't think the movie had any agenda. It doesn't really go into any broader message. It shows two or three guys doing their service honorable, who are waiting patiently for their rotations to be done. Then they contrast that with another guy, who's in an unhappy marrage/relationship; who is more darring, and really is more committed to the war. Why exactly he's more committed to the war would be one of the central questions and the only one you could find an agenda in. The guy is characterized by being very talented at his job, highly credentialed, an out of the box thinker, humane, concerned about civilians, and an excellent soldier. A bit reckless for the tastes of those who work closest with him. That character is the most compelling one in the film and he's the central character. I was supprised how many accomplished actors they had in this film.... The main characters wife/girl friend is Kate from Lost very small role, almost no lines. The original EOD specialist with only a small role here, is the main character from "La Confidential", thought he was very good.

JMS
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hurt_locker/ great movie, catch it if you have the chance this weekend It wasn't GodFather or Citizen Kaine. Wasn't even Raiders of the lost Ark. But it was a good movie, one of the best I've seen this year. you might also like "the time travelers wife", produced by Brad Pitt. It was a pretty good movie too. Least I enjoyed it.

I am surprised the hurt locker has been as slow as it is to catch on here in the states. I am taking my friend Amy to see the time travelers wife, I have been looking forward toward it for a while, glad to hear it was enjoyable.
