Johnson, Knaus return to scene of 48's 'worst' race

Team finished two laps down in 29th last year at Vegas

By David Caraviello, NASCAR.COM

LAS VEGAS -- The last place Chad Knaus wanted to be was on stage, in front of a microphone. Hours earlier his No. 48 car had finished two laps down and in 29th place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a startlingly poor performance that led some to wonder whether Jimmie Johnson's time atop the Sprint Cup tour was coming to an end. They wanted to fly home and figure out what went wrong. Instead they loaded the vehicle into the transporter, changed clothes, and walked into a tent outside Turn 3 -- where 3,000 representatives of their primary sponsor were waiting for them.

Johnson, Knaus and company have enjoyed plenty of glory days together during their years in NASCAR's premier series, winning 40 races, three championships and more than $75 million to date. But if they had to choose a single low point, it would probably be last year's event in the desert, where they turned in what car owner Rick Hendrick has termed the worst race in the history of the 48 program, and followed that with a pride-swallowing sponsor event involving thousands of managers and supervisors from Lowe's.

"I walked up on that stage and unfortunately I was the first one introduced. I had to go up there and do a two- or three-minute spiel," Knaus remembered. "I walked up there ... and was greeted with cheers and yells and screams. It felt really nice to walk up there and have that kind of reception after the kind of problems we had had that day. The first thing I said when I walked up there was, 'I hope you guys aren't [ticked] off at me.' They just all screamed, no, no. They still loved us. I knew at that point that we had to turn our season around. Not only for us, but for them too."

If F1 team wants to talk, Kyle Busch would listen

Switch to open wheel something Busch has wanted to do

By David Caraviello, NASCAR.COM

LAS VEGAS -- For all he's accomplished behind a steering wheel, Kyle Busch has a rather limited open-wheel resume. Dwarf cars out at old Pahrump Valley Speedway. Legends cars at the Bullring, the .375-mile facility on the grounds of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A few modified events. A handful of laps in a sprint car as a 14-year-old, as part of an exhibition to promote an event coming to town.

But that wouldn't stop him from listening should the organizers of a planned American-based Formula One team call. Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor recently announced their plans to launch an F1 organization based in Charlotte, N.C., and field seats for two American drivers beginning in 2010. Their long wish list of drivers reportedly includes current IndyCar pilots Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti, Jonathan Summerton of the European A1GP series, and Busch, who won eight times last year in NASCAR's premier division.

Busch has long been intrigued by the F1 circuit. The 23-year-old Las Vegas native was scheduled to take some laps in an F1 car at Motegi, Japan this past offseason for Toyota, the manufacturer that also backs his Joe Gibbs Racing team on the Sprint Cup tour. That trip had to be cancelled due to a conflict with the Nationwide Series banquet, much to Busch's chagrin. Although Busch said Friday he hasn't been contacted by anyone from the USF1 organization, if they want to talk, he'll listen.

Notes: Sadler impressed with LVMS safety upgrades

By Sporting News Wire Service

LAS VEGAS -- Elliott Sadler, currently 11th in the Sprint Cup Series championship standings, commended Las Vegas Motor Speedway for adding SAFER barriers to the inside wall on the backstretch, a response to the violet wreck Jeff Gordon suffered last year.

Sadler also is a firm believer that other tracks should follow suit.

"You hear all these owners of tracks spending all this money all the time to get a [Cup] date, so they must have money lying around somewhere," Sadler said. "I think to have a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series date, you should have soft walls all the way around the outside or inside of your race track. I know that it costs a lot [of money], but a lot of fans show up to watch us race every week. That's my opinion. There are some tracks that we could do better at."

Edwards focuses on Sunday's race

EdwardsDefending race winner Carl Edwards wasn't elated with his 16th-place qualifying run on Friday, but he wasn't overly disappointed either. Edwards is convinced he has something in reserve for Sunday's Shelby 427 Cup race.

"It's not where we wanted to be, because I thought we could be faster, but there is more in the car," said Edwards, who will try to give owner Jack Roush his seventh win in 12 Cup starts at Las Vegas.

Kenseth goes for the record at Las Vegas

February 26, 2009

By Bill Marx

Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

Sunday's Shelby 427 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is all about Matt Kenseth, and why shouldn't it be? Kenseth has a shot at making history. He won the first two races of the season, and no driver has ever won the first three races of a Cup season (or Nationwide or trucks, for that matter).

"I feel good about our chances in Las Vegas," Kenseth said. "You really have to have all the stars lined up to win, but I feel good going there."

Kenseth has two wins at Vegas (2003-04). He led a race-high 146 laps in 2006 but finished second when Jimmie Johnson passed him seconds before taking the checkered flag. It was the only time Johnson led the race. In 2007, Kenseth finished fourth. Of Kenseth's 18 Cup wins, 10 are on intermediate tracks.

"I feel like our stuff has been really competitive at those style of racetracks," he said. "Our cars have been good, and our pit crew has been right on the money. You never know what might happen in a race, but I feel we'll be competitive this weekend."

Allmendinger still hoping for full-season Cup ride

Posted: February 25, 2009

AJ Allmendinger hasn't spent the last two-plus seasons trying to prove himself on NASCAR's top circuit to bail out now.

Sure, having to race his way onto the grid week after week can get tiring. Yes, it's difficult living on Sprint Cup's perpetual bubble.

Yet there's no place the 27-year-old would rather be. Not Formula 1. Not IndyCar. Give the affable California kid a decent Cup car and he'll take his chances.

"I believe that this is the toughest racing series in the world," he said. "I haven't worked this hard for two years to go out there and give up on it."

Maybe, but he might not have a choice.

The driver of the No. 44 Dodge for Richard Petty Motorsports heads to Las Vegas this week a solid 13th in points but still in search for a sponsor with deep enough pockets to pick his team up for a full season.

DuPont cuts back track presence in a big way

February 25, 2009

By Michael Smith

Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

DuPont, long recognized as the leader in hospitality among NASCAR sponsors, is dramatically reducing its program this year as part of its companywide cost cutting.

Instead of entertaining the 17,000 guests it had at 37 races last year, DuPont will buy hospitality packages at six races this season and will host fewer than 2,000 guests.

"The economy has had a huge impact on us," said Larry Deas, DuPont's motorsports manager. "The current environment along with the high cost of hospitality have forced us to make significant cuts."

Whether DuPont's cuts signal the beginning of the end for its sponsorship of Jeff Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet remains to be seen. DuPont, which has been on the car since 1993, has been the only primary sponsor Gordon has known at Hendrick Motorsports and together they own the longest driver-sponsor-owner streak in the sport.

DuPont's current contract with Hendrick Motorsports runs through the end of the 2010 season.

Deas would not speculate on how DuPont's team deal might be affected in the future, but industry experts say it's a bad sign that an iconic sponsor has made such deep cuts, which could represent a savings well into the seven figures, analysts say. Most high-end team sponsorships cost $20 million or more a year before activation.

Busch would be interesting to watch in F1. I think he has the kind of hyper aggressivenes that F1 requires. Might suit his driving style better than NASCAR if he can adjust to the cars.

His game plan makes sense. Go over there while he's still young and race for a few years before coming back to NASCAR.

I don't think there's much chance he goes to F1. Isn't his contract up with Gibbs in the near future? If so, I think he's probably putting his name out there in hopes that he gets a sweeter deal at JGR. Plus, he hasn't won a title yet. I know that bugs him the way he dominated the first 26 weeks last year, only to fizzle out in the Chase.

If he did go to F1 I doubt seriously it would be with a new team. He'd try out and land a competitive ride or not go at all.
