TennesseeCarl
Remarkable...now the Giant Squid is no longer the largest species of squid. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2910849.stm I understand the preferred method of catching the beasts is trolling deep, using salt-impregnated Republican Guardsmen. Om
Too cool. Just ran a Google on "colossal squid" and my first reaction of this being an April Fool's kind of deal in the BBC mold appears misguided. I'll have to admit I hadn't read (or at least given credence to) the apparent scientific knowledge of this critter datng back to the 20's. Damn that Jules Verne. Does this mean there are dinosaurs living deep inside the Earth, too?
dchogs
i had seen the more recent evidence taken from sperm whale stomachs, but to have a complete specimen is amazing. a really cool find for us science geeks.

TennesseeCarl
Yomar's got a point. Remember when the coelecanth was a rarity? Now the things are showing up in the fish markets of Indonesia. Before long you won't be able to swing a dead Ivory-billed woodpecker without whacking a Colossal Squid. And Om...I really, really hope you did that google search in response to my post. I'd hate to think that was a coincidence.

Om
Pure coincidence, TC. I had just finished an unsatisfactory lunch of "jumbo shrimp" that really weren't, so, naturally, I was looking to step up.
