The Most Interesting Thing You've Ever Done With a Redskin Player/Coach

I worked for a travel company which had me escorting groups in airports around DC for several years. I met lots of Redskins that way, as well as other celebrities. I didn't for for the airport or for the airlines, however, which led to a lot of confusion. Wilbur Marshall was at Dulles to pick up his wife and he insisted that I help him. I tried to explain that I couldn't help him, but he kept insisting. I thought he was going to kick my ass.

I met Theismann several times. One time we were discussing the upcoming season and I was pretty down on the team. He was retired at that point but he thought they'd still make a deep playoff run. I quickly backed down and said, "hey, you've played in the Superbowl with these guys, I've only read the paper, so I'm not going to argue with you." Alas, I was right and the Skins did have a down year :(

One of my associates road the shuttle at Dulles with Ricky Williams during the rookie symposium and he swears RW was hitting on him. I thought he was crazy, but now I'm not so sure. All the rookies were coming through Dulles that day and that assclown from UCLA was there and was a total dick to everyone. Sure enough, he didn't make it in the nfl (Cade McNown, come to think of it).

My roommate saw about a dozen redskins take over the upstairs at Camelot once when I was living on the Hill. The only name I remember he told me was Mark Rypien.

I saw Michael Westbrook at Dulles and talked to him about the team and season. I think he was insulted that I didn't ask for his autograph. He was still playing for the Skins at the time. What can I say, I didn't want it.

I talked to Joe Montana at SFO once. Nice guy. All I could think to say was, "Hey, you're Joe Montana!" Jeez. I met George Gervin on that same trip (he was easy to spot in his 50-greatest NBA jacket on).

That's all the stories that come to mind. I'm sure there are others...

I met one of my favorite players of all time,Dave Butz, before he did a tour at my work.

He is real down to earth and we talked for a while mainly about guns, (he's on the executive board of the NRA).

He signed a Skins cap for me,(one of my most prized Redskins posessions), and autographed a picture,(made out to me).

He also let me try on his Super Bowl and 83 NFC championship rings.

That guy is a legend.

Yeah he seems to be really cool. I think he only played like 4 or 5 years but he still has some individual records, he use to own that Toyota dealearship in Warrenton but he sold it. I'm not to sure what he is doing now, but he's my best friends uncle and there family is practically my family so I seem him everynow and then, real cool guy though.

I have had many interactions with players and coaches over the years, but this one is by far my favorite.

Back in the spring of 1988 there was a charity golf tournament that the players and coaches would participate in during the off-season at Indian Springs Country Club in Silver Spring, MD. A friend of mine was the restaurant manager there and he told me to show up at his work at a curtain time and he will get me in to see some of the players and coaches before they tied off.

So I show up at the specified time and when I got out of my car, someone pulled into the parking space right next to me and got out.

It was Joe Bugel.

I was wearing a coach’s polo shirt and it happens to be the very same one Bugel was wearing. When he saw me, he came over to me and said, “Hi there, good to see you” like he knew me. So I started talking to him as we walked up together to a table where you were to check in for the tournament. The people at the table asked for our names, but they didn’t have mine on their list of course. So Bugel said to them, Hey, he is with me” and they let me in with Bugel. Once in, Bugel introduced me to a bunch of players (Jacoby, Rypien, Bostic, Mann to just name a few), then to Joe Gibbs.

Here I was standing there talking to both Gibbs and Bugel at the same time.

I was just blown away.

Then Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff walked up and Bugel introduced me to them as well.

I was in Redskins heaven.

This area I was in was restricted from fans and the media, so it was just me along with the coaches and players

Then after a few minutes of talking to everyone, I stood to the side as I watched all the 4 man teams tie off for the tournament. Once everyone was out on the course, I walked inside to the restaurant and went to see my friend.

When I found my friend, he was like, “Where were you?

I told him what had happened and he said that he would have gotten me to see them tie off from a balcony from the restaurant but not where I ended up, so it worked out great for me that day.

I will never forget that day for as long as I live.

Most I've ever done is hang out with big Mike Nelms a few times. He is my best friends uncle, real nice family guy.

Mike Nelms was one of my favorites and I always tried to act like him playing football in the backyard. I remember him rarely calling a fair catch.
