Thiebear
I think things would deteriorate before then. All laws should have a basic foundation to build upon or they will fail. Exactly what Sharia laws would be allowed that are different from current? You are divorced if you say it 3 times? Or you can kill the child if she is raped? You can't be all vague about the exact lines your going to want included?
portisizzle
Dr Rowan Williams told Radio 4's World at One that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system. QIQ. Does that mean I can start laundering money on the grounds that I can't relate?

techboy
If they already allow the Orthodox Jewish community to have their Beth Din courts to adjudicate certain legal matters, I don't see why it would be so terribly controversial to have special courts using Sharia in similar circumstances, as long as all parties are agreeable. Or Judge Judy, for that matter.
techboy
Or Judge Judy, for that matter. It's funny, because I had just thought about editing my comment to observe that we follow a similar process here with The People's Court.
Corcaigh
Williams is a nut job if he believes an insular and fundamentalist Islamic community practicing its own laws will do so in a fair and even handed way for its members. Just look at the polygamist communities in Utah to see how a society within a society operates with little or not possible means of escape.
