How Bad is our O-line?

Well it looked better last year. This certainly makes me beleive marty when he sais that Fischer should get a shot at the starting center spot. WE have some serious flood gates to fill.

By the way, isn't the WCO supposed to punish heavy blitzing? cause i don't see much punishing...

It's so bad that the "O" is really a zero.

(Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week. Remember to tip your waitresses, they work as hard as I do.)

As I mentioned here this really isn't our O-line playing tonight. Campbell is at LT and Brandt is a rookie playing first string for the first time at RG. That's 40% of a line that's either new or out of position. Plus, the Pats know that George is out of sync right now and that he's going to pass a lot to get in sync, so they're blitzing him.

In a real game we'd run a little more to set up the pass. I'm not any more concerned about our interior line from this game than I was before. But overall I think we'd all agree, we need to improve both of our lines' play.

The Redskins starting offensive line for the SD game will be Samuels LT, Jansen RT, Raymer C, Szott G, Campbell G.

Tonight, 2 of those players, Samuels and Campbell both on the left side were not playing their usual spots. Szott on the right side has been with the team for 10 days.

What kind of performance was expected with those logistics?

As I offered in another post, I think Marty should have started Campbell at left guard, his starting spot for the SD game and gone for 3 quarters with his interior 3 working to build some familiarity on the field.

Instead of doing that, Marty decided to continue to tinker and make moves ostensibly to evaluate talent.

But I don't think tonight's performances changed anyone's mind in regards to who our starting linemen are.

And with the SD game on tap, gaining consistency on the line after all the changes from last year should have been made more of a priority tonight in Game 4.

The decisions on Fletcher, Moore and Brandt should not be taken lightly, but we could have showcased Brandt at guard in the second half. And we saw Fletcher and Moore for the past 3 weeks.

We know none of these players is ready to start or even be a primary backup for 2001.

Overall, I think if they stay healthy our starting 5 will be a very solid unit in a few weeks.

As Jeff Bostic mentioned tonight, on one sack of George the center and guard suffered a miscommunication which resulted in a rusher being able to split them and come in on Jeff untouched.

That won't happen with more work together. smile.gif

I have serious reservations now about how the Redksins are going to establish a running game and create a pocket for George to pass from. Corey Raymer and his merry band of revolving door guards are getting blown off the line of scrimmage as if they were made of paper.

The worst part of the poor pass blocking is Marty has undersized guys such as Ki-Jana Carter trying to block linemen and linebackers. The size Carter gives up to these linemen and backers is too great. The Redskins will have to come up with better options in order to effectively block blitzing defenses.

Guys, offensive line play is based on consistency and communication. A line that stays healthy, even with weaker players, will be better than a line of five Pro Bowl players who are being intermixed each week at different spots. We are CERTAINLY and clearly in a tough position along the line.

My view is that the offensive line is the most difficult unit to get together as one on the football team. And, essentially, we haven't started the coming together process. We have been flexing and adjusting to compensate for Samuels injury the last couple of weeks, and we are working in a guy who's been out of football nearly a year. This process will take time.

And, I think we should expect some ugly moments when the bell goes off for real. However, you put Samuels and Jansen on the edges of any line, and I'm not going to fret a whole bunch right now. If THEY get beat a lot, we're in trouble.
