If you were a fan 20+ years ago, and still claim the 'Skins as family, you'll probably die the same way. I really don't see many passionate fans leaving or moving support to another team. I think people vent and say silly things mostly because of the love they have for this team. Diehard fans want nothing more than to see our beloved team reach the top again (and hopefully stick around there for a bit). Some people may not follow as closely as they once did, but I doubt many will totally write them off permanently. Let the casual fans come and go as they please.
