Brandt starting at Guard

This suprises me. I mean, the kid went undrafted while playing center for Big Blue. But...from the opening of camp, there has been positive things said about this kid. Since Mookie and Fletcher have disappointed, I wouldn't mind seeing him come in and have a Jon Jansen rookie season. Heck..put him at Right guard along side Jansen and we'll have a Big Blue combo over there.

Since he's most familiar with the center position, I think he might just understand the responsibilities of the guard position since the center calls the blocking scheme. In a perfect world, having Brandt come in and prove he can start at Guard would be a blessing for us.

I think at some point we'll have to cut bait with Fletcher and Moore. Simply put, Fletcher has disappointed since entering the league, and Moore has had every opportunity to become a starter and has failed. It might be time to cut our losses and set an example on this team.

Brandt is a worker who played on a very high quality Michigan offensive line. I'm interested to see what he can do as a starter, knowing Moore hasn't done anything with his opportunities. We are going to have an interesting numbers crunch on final cut down day.

All the shuffling on the line spells bad for Mookie Moore.

I would assume that these will be kept:

Jansen

Samuels

Raymer

Fischer

Brandt

Campbell

Coleman

Szott

I would assume they will keep Flectsher before Mookie.

Also, it seems liek at this poitn Mark Fischer may have won the starting job over Cor Raymer for Center. This surpirses me considering the breakdown by the end of the season. He must have built up and worked hard in the off season.

You also have to remember, the Redskins are presently very high on Ross Tucker as a tackle prospect. I suspect he's a practice squad type, but, you never know. We can probably put together the final 53-man roster ourselves. But, there will be some tweaks that might cause us some surprise.

This move, to me, is a great one. I hope it works out well.

Dave was staying at Jon's house, eating his wife's cooking since April. He had a leg-up on the others coming in because he and Jon worked on the playbook at home in the evenings.

What a great right side those two can form if given time. The Mich. connection rides again, albeit, Brandt has moved over one spot to the right.

Now this would be that little burst of energy that the line needs. To find a player in the same mold as Jon J.would be a huge bonus. I have to admit, I kinda figured we would end up starting the season with 2 guys who weren't even in the race at the begining of camp.

On Moore, I wouldn't count him out just yet. Some guys need 2-3 years of solid coaching to get to a starters level. Plus, even if Campbell, Coleman or Szott is the starters, these guys are not going to be around for the next 10 years.

This is interesting and reports are that he is playing RG and Szott is playing LG.

I was hoping for Brandt to be our future Center and Mookie to step up to be our road grater Right guard.

I see us keeping 10 O linemen including Mookie

Moore and Fletcher have proven that they can't hold up as starters. That leaves the door wide open for Brandt and Tucker to seize roster spots with their performances.

From what Marty has seen from Mookie and Derrick is little better than what he would see from inserting these rookies into the lineup for the opener. Missed assignments, losing matchups to players of suspect quality on other teams, jumping offside and in Fletcher's case being too slow to execute certain elements of the game plan.

Brandt was one of the highest rated of the undrafted free agents at center and was a player that Matt Millen wanted to sign in Detroit.

In a lot of ways he seems to have the same traits of a tough, hard competitor that originally attracted Marty to Dave Szott in 1990. At 6'2 and 296 he also appears to be quick enough to at least get out of the way of his own feet out there on the field smile.gif

Is it possible that Matt Campbell is in trouble making the team? The Panthers had a pretty weak o-line and their fans laid much of the blame at Campbell's feet. I haven't watched him play in preseason so I don't know what the consensus is. Given Marty's tinkering with the line, though, it doesn't sound like any of the interior guys have a secure job.

It's interesting that they aren't giving Brandt a shot at center. I recall reading that Fischer was better at guard than at center.

Dang, when we signed Coleman and Campbell, (with Mookie and Fletcher in the wings), I thought we'd solved any possible line trouble.

the line would be more settled except for the fact Ben Coleman may have to be written off in 2001 if his knee doesn't come around.

That was one factor that Marty couldn't predict. Coleman appeared to have a knee problem from the day camp opened.

Some have surmised that Coleman was damaged goods and the knee problem flew under the radar screen at his team physical. Maybe that his the case.

In any event, Coleman's absence meant the signing of Szott because Moore and Fletcher are no better than backups at this point, if that.

That one change plus the back injury to Samuels has made a mess of the continuity of the line. By all rights, the line SHOULD have been entering its second week with all 5 starters in place.

Instead we may not see all 5 in their places until the opener.
