A Question about Online Security (Phishing)

Recommended Posts

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about the subject, not on a technical level, of course, but not falling for the usual ploys.

Well, today, I had a brain malfunction. I was looking at other items in the VHS category to see if it was even worth it for me to sell some of mine when I saw what was CLEARLY a porn spam. Being an idiot, I thought I'd report it so I clicked on the link (on some sites, you have to click on the actual page to report abuse or violations,) which brought up the EBay sign-in page. I thought to myself in that instant, "Oh maybe they have age protected material or I haven't signed in"(I wasn't fully signed in but that's irrelevant, you can click on any item listing on Ebay without being signed in, I'm a moron)

But then it brings you to this lame porn site. Besides being astounded at how sophisticated this vast criminal enterprise has become, it occurred to me I that I had just handed these *******s my password. Fortunately, Ebay encrypts your card and bank info so it isn't something that shows up if you log in but I made sure to change my password TWICE, immediately.

So my question is, am I protected now? I mean, if I changed it and it's probably an automatic page where my old password was logged in their system but not used yet, isn't all access now closed off to them? Basically, I'm safe now, right?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It seems to me like you should be fine, but I would email ebay and report the phishing scam to them, as well as ask them what you need to do to be 100% secure.

Change your user name and passwords to be safe, and definetly report to ebay.

Also keep a VERY close eye on your account.

What he said, and make sure you do EVERYTHING that he just listed, not just one or two of them. Keep an especially close eye on your bank account activity. Now that you've changed your password, your account should be blocked to the perpetrators. However, now that they have your username, they can attempt multiple exploits to gain your new password. If you find that you are locked out of Ebay (probably due to multiple failed login attempts), that means they were trying to get into your account and using your old password. You're best off changing your username as well. Not sure if you can do that, however, without the help of Ebay staff.
