Punt returners

Here's an idea. Why not have Westbrook return punts? Clearly we're having major problems, what with our 2.4 yard return average and retread of the week coming in for a look-see (Eric Metcalf and Nate Jacquet were the latest). It's not like Westbrook's a critical part of the passing offense at this point. In fact, now that I think about it, Westbrook should be volunteering, just so that he can get the ball in his hands.

I would be down with Westbrook but he's kinda a big target and easy to grab onto. Thats why teams go for the smaller more elusive guy.

Might as well give it a try. After years of being teased by Westbrook's potential, I'm finished with him. He's bound to end up on IR anyway.

I want to see what we have in McCants, Skaggs and Derrious Thompson. If we are not planning to re-sign Westbrook (does anyone think he's a 'Marty' kind of guy?), what's the point of having him out there? I'm disappointed that the trade deadline passed without getting something for him. How many years have we invested in the guy?

Huh? The season isn't shot? The fumbles and non-catches we've already seen on punt returns would get worse? Why not try him in practice to see if he could do it? It's true that most punt returners are of the 5-10" variety, but there are a few that are big. I'd rather try him than sign Nate Jacquet.

As stated above, Westbrook doesn't have the sure hands you need as a punt returner. That is one of the reasons Bates has not been successful there either. Lockett simply lacks the open field speed and acceleration to be successful as a returner.

Nate Jacquet did a decent job for Miami returning punts and of course Tamarick Vanover was one of the better returners in the league before being suspended and out of the NFL for the past year.

Vanover was already in and Marty decided not to sign him. So it appears for once that Marty is not going to go back to the KC well for talent.

What about McCants? He is a rookie but I am curious to see what he can do in the open field.

At 1-5 this team is not vying for a playoff spot, so I don't see where we are holding out to get an established pro bowl returner to make a run!

I sure wish Marty would get some more of the younger players involved on Sundays.

Bryan Johnson had that nice catch last week downfield as a split receiver and should see more time at fullback for Bennett who has been spotty as a receiver and average as a blocker.

We need to see more of Thompson and McCants at receiver to see what they have to offer.

On defense we are making progress with Smoot and Pierce getting starter's time.

What about Ohalete? They seem to be using him more in the expanded packages on D and he seems to be a guy that is always around the ball.

Perhaps he will be the replacement for Shade ultimately?

Central McClellion was a little overwhelmed on Sunday against Carolina, but that was his first game action on the regular unit.

I don't think he is a legit corner prospect at this point, but has proven his worth on special teams so far.

Of the veterans we spent money on, where are Robert Jones and Kevin Lockett?

I don't think they were acquired to spend most of the season on the bench, seeing little action.

With Alexander out, I can't understand why this team doesn't use more 3 wide formations.

Gibbs used the 3 wides formation to get spacing for the running game at times and I think with Gardner's performance last week, we can now sell the credibility of the passing game enough to get that commitment outside by the D to open up room for Davis.

Davis had 99 yards vs. Dallas and 99 yards vs. Carolina.

Those were the two games the team was in down to the final gun.

If the Redskins can establish Davis against the Giants, they can be in this game. If not, you are looking at a 10 point Giant victory.

The one thing we have going for us is the fact Davis has had some of his best games against NY in the past as Emmitt has against us.

Now, we just have to pray that Jansen is up to taking on the "BEAST" Strahan.

9 sacks already? And he doesn't show any signs of slowing down either.

The guys just signed Metcalf. Geez, why do we insist on signing these old guys. We need to give the younger guys a chance.

And I agree, if we're going to lose Mike, we should have gotten something for him. It's not like by keeping him, we're going to start throwing to him and he's going to carry us to the playoffs. I don't think Banks can see to that side.

Metcalf can't possibly be a downgrade at the punt returner spot. I tend to agree with the comment above about going with older players though. I'd have much rather contacted October again, and given it a shot. I'd have rather activated Skaggs and seen. Metcalf is the type of move a team on the verge of competing for a playoff spot makes. I'm optimistic things could turn around by the end of the year, but, I'm not sure I'm thinking playoffs. Marty clearly still is. If he wasn't, we would not be signing a guy like Metcalf.

Doom is in the box.
