IONTOP Posted March 30, 2006 Share Posted March 30, 2006 somewhere the FBI has burried on their page how to format a hard drive so as they couldn't retrieve any date, it had something to do with complying with a privacy law or something. I read it once but I couldn't find it again, but if I remember correctly it involved 8 sweeps of formatting and filling the drive with random bytes of data... That could take a really long time if one were to try it. I have a program that will retrieve data that has been formated over but it only really works for retrieving the data cleanly providing you haven't written over those sectors so I think that 1 or 2 times through should make it safe for donation. That's why I keep a beaker of acid next to my tower... therefore if the FBI come to my house to look for any illegal music I may or may not have on my computer I can just drop it in there...
