KC's Offensive Production in DC?-Not So Fast

The biggest problem I have with your argueent here is that you've basically said that Al Saunders was only good because of the pieces he had in Kansas City. You sound like an Al Saunders offense without Tony Gonzalez and Willie Roaf will never work. The reason men like Saunders and Gibbs are successful is their ability to maximize whatever assets they have.

Bingo

example, when Gibbs had Riggo.... he was predominate run first, later when he had the posse and strong armed qb... 3 1000 yard wrs

You're a year late, bud. The Skins were in the top ten (possibly top 3-5) in redzone scoring this year. Gonzo is used a lot like an H-Back, minus lining up in the backfield. He is sent in motion a lot, sent to the slot, split wide, and of course next to the OT. It is one of the things Saunders is most known for...shifting Gonzo around to exploit favorable matchups.

Sound anything like the way Cooley is used??

And by the way, Cooley outperformed Gonzo this year. Thanks for playing though.

The skins were #3 in the league in redzone scoring this past season. Cooley was used down there alot as well as royal and sellers, who mainly blocked. Sellers did also have 7 recieving TDS and 1 rushing TD. So i think we have a pretty solid fullback that Saunders can hopefully use to help this offense improve more.

We are not an exact carbon copy of the Chiefs, but that doesn't mean we won't be successful. Saunders was good in St. Louis. Like all good coaches he maximizes his talent. We have plent of talent.

The biggest impact Saunders will have is his PLAYCALLING philosophy. I can't believe how this hire completely fufills my only gripe about our team these last two years, albeit it was a very serious gripe. The impotence and predictability of our offensive playcalling was downright maddening. Gibbs' staff seemed so scared to call the risky plays nessesary to keep opposing defenses off balance. It seemed like as the pressure mounted, Gibbs' heart rate went up and the proper playcalling went out the door. Gibbs' realizes how the pressure to win inhibits his playcalling ability and was honest enough to do what was nessesary. This guy has led the number one offense in the NFL for the last 2 years. If he can do any close to that with the defense we have... It just seems too perfect.

It sucks that our rookie QB will have to direct that offense sometime in the middle of next year when Brunell goes down. Unless he comes in and has a year like Big Ben had his first year in Pittsburg, we'll be looking at an early playoff exit at best.

KC has its strengths and weaknesses, so do Skins. Saying Saunders will not do what he did in KC because we do not have same strengths is silly - we have different strenghts and there is nothing saying that he will not be able to take advantage of them.

4- There is only 1 Tony Gonzalez and trying to fit either Cooley or Robert Royal into his shoes is a set up for a let down. That production will have to come from somewhere else, or a combination of places and is a huge factor especially in the redzone, where the 'New Gibbs' has struggled. IMO, Saunders has been brought in for this sole purpose-Help inside the 20.

2005 Statistics:

Tony Gonzalez 78rec 905yds 2tds

Chris Cooley 71rec 774yds 7tds

Who is the bigger red zone threat?

Why does everyone automatically start comparing positions exactly with where the previous coach came from. When Gibbs came back, we all said, Ramsey = Rypien, Coles = Clark, Garnder = Monk, etc.

Look what happened, none of that happened. Saunders will have a system setup for the talent in the positions we have. Stop saying Cooley will be Gonzo. Maybe we won't have a Gonzo, but they never had a Cooley. Maybe he implements a diff't running scream for Portis. Maybe he implements, a completely different system. Who knows. What we do know, is the offense will be more balanced and catching defenses off guard. Thats what we should be excited about, is a fresh new exciting, but balanced offense.

Well, first you seem pretty sure that Brunell is going to get knocked out, when he mostly stayed healthy this year.

Second, our offense isn't that much different than Pittsburgh's in that we are a ball-controll offense. The primary responsibilities is to lean on the running game, and occasionally make plays in the passing game. I believe that Campbell probably can pull that off, with the advantage of knowing most of the terminology by sitting and learning. So, I don't think it will be THAT much of a liability to start Campbell.

I thought they would line him up different but others would shift not gonzo
