who's gonna be our pr/kr???

Awesome

Any thoughts on what the skins might do to fill these pressing needs? Is metcalf coming back? I wouldn't think so, but even so, I don't feel that comfortable with him back there.
Is there anyone on our roster now, besides Champ, who has experience returning punts and or kicks?
If not, where do we go to fill the need. Is anyone of note available in FA?
HAIL

Good Question.

I can not find anything but on nfl.com Metcalf is not listed on the Redskins Roster http://www.nfl.com/rosters/2001/WAS.html and the Depth Chart shows Michael Bates as our K/P Returner so that is out dated. http://www.nfl.com/depthcharts/2001/WAS.html

I would like to see Champ back their returning punts, I know we used him some in 2000 and he did have a big return on MNF vs Dallas.

[ April 11, 2002, 03:59 PM: Message edited by: fuji869 ]

For those of you who want Champ returning kicks I have 1 name for you.......Jason Sehorn. Champ is far to valuable as a shut down corner to risk injury as a return man. If he does it a couple of times during the year thats too many IMO but I suppose I could live with it, but I'd be nervous the whole time. Everyone likes to remeber Darrell doing great things returning punts, but he also got injured twice doing it.

Kilmer, i agree champ is one of our five most valuable players right now: davis, samuels, champ, arrington, jansen.
and while the arguement that champ is too valuable to risk getting hurt returing kicks and punts is valid, i still think it's a risk worth exploring. in his three years with us, champ has never missed a game due to injury, he's durable and right now is by far the best athlete on the team.
also, what if people had never let dieon return punts b/c he was too valuable? Sure, he ended up getting hurt a lot towards the end of his career, but just look at the production he had as a return man. i think champ could be at least as effective. we don't have to use him every time, but let's not totally discount the idea. of course, i'm pleading my case to the wrong people, Stevie Ballgame, are you out there?

Whoever our PR and KRs are they're going to be good at what they do. It's the rest of the special teams that you have to worry about. The past few years we have had excellent pr/krs but our blocking was at times (or most of the time) horrible. It improved alot last year, and I hope it continues to.

confident predictions:

1. Eric Metcalf won't be back with the Redskins at age 35.

2. Champ Bailey will NOT be the primary punt returner, although like Darrell he might see some time in key games.

3. Jacquez Green or Reidel Anthony will end up with some KR/PR duties.

4. The Skins will NOT sign or use a returner that does not project to a regular position on the team, ie there will be no more Michael Bates or Brian Mitchells that are strictly specialists.

to me what would really be refreshing is selecting draft picks and having them come in and make contributions on special teams the way they seem to for other teams each season.

the Redskins are in a catch-22 where we either have to spend a lot of money to staff the ST's with veterans to get any production or we go with younger players and everything goes to hell.

Look around the NFL. Younger players and draft picks OFTEN contribute on special teams.

What are other teams like the Steelers and 49ers doing in that regard that we are not?

Watch out for spurrier to possibly draft Aaron Lockett in round 7 .. probably with the comp pick. If we did he would probably return some punts. He's a WR out of Kansas St. I'll be honest, the guy's a smurf (5'7) but we're the best fit for him. He's as fast as they come (4.31 forty) and Spurrier got a chance to see him at the Hula bowl where he looked good. His height may be too much of a disadvantage for him to make it in the NFL, but if there's a system he can make it in, it's gotta be spurriers.

Bulldog I couldnt agree more. Having young guys work their way on the team by playing good special teams would be fantastic. Im hoping that SS can help us out with grabbing players later in the draft.

RedskinsHQ, i may be mistaken but i also believe Aaron Lockett is Kevin's brother. Even more reason to give him a try with a late pick.

Jacquez Green will start out being the punt returner, as he has a 95 yard NFL punt return for a TD. Kevin Lockett also returns punts, but his average has never been any good. Jacquez did develop fumblitis problems though in his rookie year because of his small size. So its his job to lose. Reidel Anthony also returned punts in college.

We have a lot of guys who are potentially good KR's, such as Reidel Anthony, Skaggs, McCants, Thompson, and even that Penn State running back whose name I cant recall.

I dont think we should use Champ Bailey as a punt returner, except maybe in the playoffs in an emergency. He is too valuable as a shut-down cornerback. Jason Sehorn is a prime example of what can happen, in that he has never been the same since his knee surgery. It doesnt make sense to risk Champ, when you got a half dozen guys who can also do a decent job.

Why does anyone think that Darrel Green has lasted for 20 years as a cornerback? The reason is that he has never had KNEE SURGERY, which would have cost him his speed. He has been virtually injury free for 20 years, except for a broken wrist on one occasion. Green was one of the all time great punt returners in college, averaging over 20 yards per return. Joe Gibbs being smart though, only used him in emergencies, such as that Chicago playoff game years ago, which Green won with a punt return TD. But even on that play he injured his ribs.

So I dont want to hear any Champ Bailey for punt or kickoff returner, or Im putting out some more contracts on some of you guys.

[ April 11, 2002, 09:25 PM: Message edited by: inmate running the asylum ]

Re-sign Carter and give him a shot. Perhaps he can show something more than what he showed this year with enough work (only a 13.5 average on KR duties). Let him be back there on KR with Green, and one of the two on PR. It will be an interesting question to see the answer of...

Hey, didn't Lavar get 35 yards on a kick return two years ago?

Ki-Jana would probably be good on KR, but not PR. There is a difference and very few return men can do both equally well. Brian Mitchell was one of those exceptions to the rule, and consequently is one of the all time greats.

I never understood last year why Marty insisted on using Michael Bates as a punt returner, when in 9 previous years he had shown that he was not capable of returning punts well. Although an excellent kickoff returner where he had more room, when you are looking up to receive the punt and people are barreling down on you, it is quite unnerving. Punt returners generally are smaller, quicker guys, although there are exceptions such as Brian Mitchell.

Yeah LaVar did. But most people dont know that he was an outstanding running back in high school, before going to Penn State.

[ April 11, 2002, 09:46 PM: Message edited by: inmate running the asylum ]

Lockett is a 160 lb., smurf and was great in college, but sometimes small is too small in the NFL. The guys that are under 180 lbs., frequently become rag dolls on returns and frequently have fumblitis problems. Jacquez Green is great returning when he has an opening, but even he had fumble problems at Tampa Bay, and they relieved him of those duties.

The guy we brought down from Canada last year was great in Canada, but at 165 lbs., he was too small for the NFL and got cut.

Mike Nelms was another guy we used to have who was great on both punt and kickoff returns -- who came down from Canada -- and although not quite as big as Brian Mitchell, was not a small guy.

[ April 11, 2002, 10:09 PM: Message edited by: inmate running the asylum ]
