Greetings from Puerto Rico.

Tips for visiting PR are as follows:

Check www.aa.com weekly for good last minute fares. You'll be flying into San Juan International Airport. American Airlines is the biggest airline that flies to PR. Also depending on where you are located you may try US Airways, Jet Blue, websites, etc

San Juan is the capital. It has the most hotels and places to visit.

Old San Juan City was built as a fort. It has museums, shops, monuments, old forts and prisons which are open daily to the public. One of the hotels located there is called HOTEL EL CONVENTO (CONVENT IN SPANISH). May be pricey to stay at but walking distance to the area I just described. Definitely eat at a restaurant called Sam's Patio (hopefully it's still open). Great burgers!

You may want to stay in Condado area or Isla Verde.

Condado is a long strip of hotels and its about 14 to 20 minutes away from Old San Juan City. Depending on which hotel you stay at, they have tours you can take to the Yunque Rainforest and the Caverns in the Mountains, MALLS-(biggest mall is Plaza Las Americas). Beaches are walking distance.

Isla Verde is right near the airport and has about the same described above and is more closer to the rainforest.

You can also try Hotels in Rincon, which is northwest of San Juan. Great surfer beaches, whale watching and a more laid back environment.

Fajardo is also Northeast and near the rainforest. It's more expensive out there since there are 5 star accomodations.

People are generally friendly. Food is great. Stay away from Baccardi Rum (leaves a bad after taste). Try Don Q Rum, which was originally brewed in the second largest city called Ponce, which is where I am from.

Ponce is my hometown and it has has a huge golf club course resort which recently opened. Check Ponce Hilton (part of Hilton Hotels). Great museum in town, downtown looks like Spain with great architecture, smaller mall than the one described above. Other than that, not much to do.

If you want to be secluded, go to Culebra. It's practically a deserted island with guest houses and better beaches than on Puerto Rico. You''ll have to fly out of San Juan International Airport to get there in a small plane. Airport at this island has one landing strip. Very peaceful there.

Things are pretty pricey nowadays as far as shopping (hint hint for the wife).

Let me know if you need any further information. If you Google Puerto Rico you'll come up with various locally established sites that give you further details.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck!

One thing people don't hear about alot when it comes to Puerto Rico are the people, the nicest in the world, and yes, I have pretty much been aroundt he world, most of Europe, South America, and Australia ... going to China in the Spring...

Don't confuse the people of this island with the sterotypical Puerto Rican you see on T.V. and have met in New York. Real puerto ricans are humble, polite, upbeat and friendly.

Here's an example, compare Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rican) to Macho Camacho (New Yorkrican) and you'll get the picture...

We are going to Puerto Rico, yay! Leaving tomorrow morning @ 7am, coming back late on the 30th. I cannot wait!

It is an all-inclusive resort north of a city called Tambor (on the Pacific ocean). I am very excited and cannot wait till tomorrow :)

I figured someone would say Vegas...but We don't Gamble or Drink....so I didn't even Investigate that avenue......

You don't need to gamble and drink to have a great time.....Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world...there is so much to see and do....a week is not enough.......

PR is beautiful...the people are warm and friendly.....you can't go wrong there!

I'd love to visit PR. Do you like beaches, history, nature? You may be able to do a grand canyon on that. Florida in april is usually pretty nice. West Palm or Ft Lauderdale. The snow birds have left, but that's also around spring break. Maybe an alaska/canada train tour.

Just some ideas.

Sign up for the Travelzoo.com Top 20 list of bargains.........the list is emailed to you every week and has some unbelievable deals on airfare, all-inclusive trips, and hotels. A lot of times there is more than one resort to choose from and you can upgrade to a 5 star for pretty cheap. The wife and I went to the Dominican Republic in May and paid only $620 total for an all-inclusive including airfare for 2. I will only stay at top rated hotels and I was not disappointed. Check out the details of the offer, hotel, etc and then go to a website like http://www.tripadvisor.com and read what other people have to say about the hotel. We have taken at least a half dozen trips this way....mostly to the Carribean. It's great that you get to go to destinations that you wouldn't have even considered just because the deals are too good to pass up. With all the money you save you can really splurge when you get to your destination on dinners, shopping etc. That being said......I am going to Vegas for New Years...flying first class, staying at Wynn's....no bargains there.

Clarficiation: The Pacific Ocean does not border Puerto Rico. What surrounds Puerto Rico is the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Also, hotels have a lot of casinos. If you are into gambling, you can also enjoy the casinos at the major hotels in Condado, Isla Verde, Fajardo, Ponce and San Juan area.

Second the suggestions on Puerto Rico. My wife is from there and it is wonderful.

I particularly like Fajardo -- the Fajardo Inn is pretty nice without crushing the wallet (was around $125/night when we stayed there). If you go there, try to hook up with someone who will take you out cayaking into the mangrove channels, that is super cool!

The rain forest is also a great trip. We were in there on Christmas a couple years ago, fantastic being in a tropical rain forest in December.

San Juan is ok, especially historically, but I liked the smaller towns and areas a lot better. Digging a bit deeper is worth it for sure!
