tizzod
My understanding is that George Allen is responsible for making it as rabid as it is. He said things like Tex Schramm deliberately put the Cowboys in the NFC East so they could win it every year because it is an easy division. Stuff like that to get people all riled up. He wishes he could fight Tom Landry at the 50 yard line...crazy stuff. Sounds like he was awesome!
gridironmike
http://espn.go.com/page2/wash/s/closer/020315.html ......Meanwhile in the late '50s, (Barnee) Breeskin (writer of the song "Hail to the Redskins") found himself at odds with Marshall and so, in a pique, had his attorney sell "Hail to the Redskins" to Clint Murchison, who was trying to start a NFL expansion team in Dallas. The bitter irony of the Cowboys one day beating their legendary rivals to the 'Skins own fight song never came to be -- Murchinson simply held the beloved tune hostage until Marshall agreed to vote for the expansion. The Redskins then bought it back. ......... Playing dirty since their inception.

jwpanic
dallas fans have always been jealous of the fact that redskins fans could read, write, do math, meet girls, bathe properly, run faster, throw farther, drive better, walk upright, etc.
pez
It was the song that started the rivalry, but don't forget about the chickens!!!
Mackdaddydean
It may have been the song that started the rivalry but George Allen is responsible for making that rivalry hostile and huge. He would tell his players all sorts of things to make them literally HATE the cowboys.

KevinthePRF
Along with the song story, which is accurate. Clint Murchinson also bribed a US Congressman $70K so he would declare the Redskins Radio network a monopoly. This political pressure also weighed heavily against Marshall to approve the expansion Cowboys. But I agree that George Allen really sparked the hatred between the Cowboys and Redskins. Before that it was just a divisional game.
