ORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) - The Detroit Lions lost their insurance policy for quarterback Joey Harrington on Friday, when backup Jeff Garcia fractured his left fibula in the first quarter of the team's preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

Garcia scrambled for a 28-yard run on the final play of the first quarter but was tackled by Bills defensive back Terrence McGee by the right sideline and immediately went down in pain.

"He has a broken fibula up high on his left leg, and a possible ankle sprain as well," Lions coach Steve Mariucci said. "We are going to get an MRI in the morning just to see how badly the ankle might be sprained.

"Keep your fingers crossed. We should get him back sometime this year. It looks like it will be several weeks to heal the fibula, but he will be back. He is a tough guy."

For the Lions, the loss of their backup quarterback is more significant than it would be for most teams, as Garcia was signed during the offseason to work with and potentially replace Harrington should the 2002 third overall pick continue to struggle.

The 35-year-old Garcia played in 11 games with Cleveland in 2004, completing 144-of-252 passes for 1,731 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He had a career-low passer rating of 76.7.

A three-time Pro Bowler with San Francisco, Garcia enjoyed his best seasons under Mariucci with the 49ers, passing for 84 touchdowns with 32 interceptions from 2000-02.
