Right.  Early unqualified withdrawals are deemed prorated between contribution and gain.

There's income tax on the gains too, so gotta track that part as well.  This is getting into an area where it makes sense to discuss your options with your plan admin and/or financial advisor (on a per incident fee basis if you want to seriously pursue it), but depending on the terms of your roth 401k plan, you may be able to take a loan for up to 50K or half of the balance, whichever is less.  Then you have to pay it back with interest in 5 years, but the interest is being paid back to your roth account with no income tax consequences, so it ends up being somewhat of a shifting of money from one pocket to the other.  Depending on how much you wanted to access and the fees associated with the loan setup (some plans charge, some don't), it could make sense to use the loan as a bridge till you hit 59.5 to avoid tax consequences.

Is that proration concept also applicable to a Roth IRA?

Pre-2024 roth 401k balance has RMD requirements, but post-2024 doesn't.  401K has much superior creditor protection than IRA, but investment options and voluntary terms like loans are employer driven.  Self employed Roth 401k exists too, which can hit the sweet spot if done right.  Roth 401k also has much higher contribution allowance than Roth ira.

@TheGreatBuzz, unqualified early withdrawals are prorated between contributions (untaxed at withdrawal) and investment gains (subject to the penalty and tax discussed), in case that helps your consideration

So let’s say his Roth 401k balance is $100k. He’s contributed $60k and it has grown an additional $40k. His goal is to pull out $30k. Are you saying that he can’t pull all $30k from his contributed piece? That 30k withdrawal would be 18k contribution and 12k gain and he’d half to pay taxes on the 12k?

He said the account was a Roth so those contributions are made with after tax dollars.

    Yep, he cleared that up.

But that answer leads me to another question, what is the difference between a Roth IRA and Roth 401(k)? Is it basically the Roth 401(k) is set up by the employer and its contribution limits are different?

My understanding is that for my Roth IRA (7K yearly limit), I can pull the contributions at any time penalty free (I just can’t put them back in). If I pull out any gains, I have to pay taxes prior to age 59.5.

In general. prior to age 59 1/2 you'll owe ordinary income tax on the gains & dividends AND a 10% penalty on the total withdrawn amount (not just the gains). This also applies if you've had the account for less than five years. However, there are some exemptions dependent on the purpose of the withdrawal so maybe a tax accountant is worth asking what qualifies.

    https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-exceptions-to-tax-on-early-distributions

You don’t pay taxes on the withheld amount? I thought that if I withhold $20k this year, i don’t pay income taxes on that amount this year. But when I withdraw it in retirement, I pay income taxes on that $20k plus any gains/dividends. Is that not correct?

It's not a guarantee but the sheer notion of the Nats actually being able to be seen in the area is very enticing. Factor in Leonsis/ willingness to keep star talent and it's a no-brainer.

I agree with having the Nationals on Monumental. But Leonsis owning the team doesn’t have to be a requisite for that to happen.

Also, like you, I would love to have Rendon here on a full no-trade clause. 🤣

And, ughh, having Abrams, Gore, and Wood in this organization is probably the worst thing that has ever happened to this franchise.

But we’ve known Ted has kept the Wizards a consistent winner during his ownership. With the salary cap in the NBA it gets so hard to decide which free agents to sign because the demand to come to Washington is so damn high.

The MASN deal is already close to resolution anyway and without malcontents up north one would hope a more reasonable Rubenstein would be willing to sever ties and assign the Nationals their own TV rights finally.

And what better place to put them than Monumental Sports Network, a channel most people already get for Caps and Wizards games.

Why would Leonsis have to own the team to have the Nats broadcasted on Monumental?

Yeah, it's hard to plan too far ahead in terms of retirement tax planning considering that laws may change.  It's probably a good idea and enough for now to keep an eye on the common strategies and take a one time meeting with a financial or tax advisor in your 50's and another closer to the time if and when you decide to execute any strategy.  As it stands now, RMD regulations on non-Roth accounts will typically make conversion in between retirement and social security a serious consideration for many people.

If I want to stop my W2 job at 55 and start converting 401k dollars to Roth, those conversions are taxed as income. Do those conversions also count to the Social Security calculations?

Just pick Sarr or Clingan.  We need to be able to control the paint to beat any of these playoff teams.  None of these guards or wings are going to be transcendent players.  Get the foundation big and try again for the elite perimeter player next year.

Trying to win with the kinds of bigs we've had for the past 30 years is like trying to win in the NFL with total garbage for your OL and DL.  It's just never going to happen.  Get off the treadmill and pick a big that's actually worth building around.  Then hedge your bets with Edey in the late first just in case he's the next Jokic.  I swear to God if we talk ourselves into some soft ass Euro wing because we think we've got something with Kuzma and Bagley, I will never watch another Wizards game again.

We could draft Clingan at number two or wait until he bounces around the league and grab him like Alex Len, Greg Monroe, or Marvin Bagley.

(I’m not saying don’t draft him, just saying he is likely to bust like any of the perimeter players.

I'd never do it, but the line between service animal and pet has become very blurred.

I worship dogs. But I sort of agree and don't think they belong in eating locations unless they are properly trained and vested. I see too many of them in the mall now, tbh. And a lot of malls have become 25% or more food driven these days.

The thing that gets me is that you have a dog in a place where people eat. Dogs lick their buttholes. I don’t want that when I choose to go out to eat. Some people are allergic. Other people bring in their dogs, are the dogs going to get along? What can you do? The people working the line who ask me if I want brown or white rice and give me white when I ask for brown don’t need to be dealing with people complaining. That shouldn’t be their job. You talk to the person with the dog. How’s that going to go?

It’s just the selfishness of it all. If you have a need for a service dog, that dog needs to be vested in my opinion.

Bunch of roster spots opening up at the trade deadline is the plan imo. Winker, Senzel, and/or Rosario could end up being worth at least some level of trade return.

Nats are in no rush to get these guys up. They're still playing the long game. Which honestly I get. It would be awesome if the team could make a run for the WC this year, but even if they got in the playoffs they absolutely do not have a roster that can compete and win a series. There's going to be 3+ prospects ready for the bigs by the end of this year, they'll get a couple months of experience and be ready for opening day next year. Sprinkle in some offseason investment in FA and 2025-26 could be interesting years.

I hear you on Senzel and House. I don’t think there is any pressure to bring him up until after the trade deadline. The main goal is to get him through the season playing on a daily basis. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays in Rochester and shuts it down at the end of the season.

For the OF, Wood is the only one ready right now, imo. And I think the reasons to keep him down are pretty weak.

They have two guys (Gallo and Thomas that they have to work back). Garrett, and I just read this over the weekend, still has options. So later this month they have to find a spot on the 40 for him, but can keep him in the minors.

If Winker’s back is preventing him from playing, they are down to three OFers. I think if he’s IL bound, then Gallo is the corresponding move.

Lipscomb could be sent down for Wood.

Then you have Thomas and Winker working their way back. Robles leaving would make the most sense especially when you have Young with the same profile.

But it really wouldn’t surprise me if they activate Call if Winker is to miss a decent amount of time. I just think that they’ll play a man down until he’s ready.

I'm sorry this is the same in denial rubber stamp response I've seen all year when in the same breath we know this draft is trash and we won't get a generational player out of that.

If yall don't want to trade for someone, don't waste this pick in this draft and act like you didn't know but we're supposed.

If this was so black and white in what to do, let ChatGPT do it...clearly it's not this year.

Why do you think teams will be wanting to trade good players for a draft pick in this year’s draft?

Saw the Davey note that he wanted to pull Robles but Winker's back was an issue. As much as my gut says, they let him go, someone else picks him up, and he doesn't improve with a new team. It's time. Thank you for 2019. You did contribute a lot to that title. But it's time. Too old to be making stupid mental mistakes and hurting your team a few games in a row.

Davey a few days ago made some comments about Wood:

since this comment, I believe a few of those blasts were against lefties. I know Davey was looking to say something/anything as a reason to keep him in AAA, and that kind of backfired immediately. Even last week on Mr. Tony, Barry Svrluga said that if Wood came up right now, he'd probably be their 2nd best player immediately.

If they bring back Gallo and he stinks it up while Wood is crushing still in AAA. That's going to suck.

I definitely want Wood up in Washington. I don’t really understand the “plan”. The service time stuff has worked itself out. Maybe they are still concerned that he could come in first or second in RoY and that is the delay.

Gallo is going to come back regardless of the Wood decision. The challenge is that you’d ideally want Meneses up to hit against lefties so that takes up an extra roster spot.

Davey took a gamble going after Devers in the 8th. Seemed like he didn't wanna use Harvey or Finnegan again. So he went with the left on left matchup.

Win the series tomorrow with a well rested A pen

Yeah, it was debatable. He had Harvey up and warming. I thought he was going to bring him in to face the guy before Devers.
