Like any other stimulus, factory/govt/etc, it tended to act mostly as a pull-ahead mechanism. In other words, it gave customers who were considering a purchase in the next 8-12 months a strong reason to BUY NOW. Also, just like any other legislation there were consequences that were realized down the road that were less than ideal.
But, I think the law had three clear goals:
1). Get product moving for the factories and the dealers and do it quickly.
2). Generate considerable amounts of state and local tax revenue and do it quickly.
3). Raise the country’s overall fleet MPG at a time when dependence on oil imports was very uncomfortable for us.
Tough to argue that this did not occur. I was on the ground as a GSM for a Lincoln-Mercury/Mazda store at the time and it helped us out quite a bit. The govt paperwork involved was profoundly unpleasant, of course. But everyone expected that.
I still socialize with with a few guys from that era and we always look back and laugh about all the ridiculous bureaucratic hoops we had to jump through. No regrets, tho.
My buddy is a wholesaler - and was during Cash For Clunkers Part Uno. He said that deal pretty much killed the used car business. Cars he could buy for cheap were scrapped. As I recall, they poured cement in the cylinder heads. So, cars in the $1-10k range were destroyed (I can't recall the exact range but I think this is close). I *think* there were major penalties if you got caught not sending a car to be destroyed.
Yes, it would be good for new car sales, manufacturing, etc. I hope the details get refined in Part Deux to make up for the deficiencies in Part Uno.

The intro of Sweet Jane on Rock & Roll Animal is one of my all-time favorites. Great guitar work & a fantastic song intro. Live as well which is my preferred version for any band/musician.

I've got a question for a dr person in the know....my wife went to the dr and was diagnosed with bronchitis which is highly contagious...she's had it for a week and a half..how long will it take for me to get it?
Not a doctor, but we had a similar situation in February. We returned from vacation via MIA airport on February 19th (Wednesday). On Friday, my wife started feeling ill. By Saturday it was full-blown so she went to the ER near us. She was diagnosed with bronchitis, given meds & sent home. Monday evening I started to get that feeling in the back of my throat. I immediately took a double dose of elderberry & normal dose of Coricidin. I continued this through Thursday evening. I never got sick, but I did take a couple of afternoon naps because I wasn't feeling 100%. That was it. By Friday I was fine. My wife was still battling it almost 2 full weeks after she started on 2/21.
My guess is if you haven't had it yet, you're probably ok. Social distance & use lots of sanitary wipes on all surfaces in your house.

I've been researching clippers on amazon. I was around 7 weeks without a haircut when all this came about and a few days before the governor shut down barber shops, I told the wife I was going to get one and she talked me out of it. So now, here I sit with dueling tornadoes on the back of my head. I'm thinking a military buzz is in order here real soon.
Another issue, taking care of the dog. We normally take her to get groomed, but that's no longer an option. She's 10 months old and the thought of taking care of her nails myself bothers me, but we've got a grinder coming via amazon now.
You need the Flowbee...

At some point assuming the entire world economy doesn’t collapse, we’re going to build an outdoor kitchen, and I think I’m going to have a green egg built into it. I know 4 professional chefs who have the green egg, and they just love it. I’ve never cooked on one myself but I’m hopeful.
The cost of a BGE was the breaker for me. I couldn't justify the price for the size I wanted. An XL BGE has a grill diameter of 24" & costs $1,700. The large BGE grill diameter is 18.25". My Akorn has a grill diameter of 19.75". Plus the Akorn has an additional grill grate (included) that expands the total grill area. When I'm smoking ribs I use the top grate for corn on the cob or potatoes because there's no room with the ribs.
In the end, the goal is to be able to maintain a temp for as long as you need to. There are many, many types of kamado's that will do that. To me, it came down to price & performance.
Oh, one other thing on the BGE, make sure you include the cost of the stand to hold it. I think the call it a 'Nest' lol

^^My neighbor has that model & likes it. The downside is if you want to do a long smoke it won't hold the temperature because it's not insulated.
I have a Char-Griller Akorn. It's a metal, insulated kamado-style smoker/grill. When I was researching kamado's I stumbled across this model on a website (kamadoguru.com). I didn't want to pull the trigger on a >$1K & >700LB ceramic kamado. This grill had some really good reviews. I've had it for 7 years & paid $150 at Kroger's during their 4th of July sale. I can hold a 250 temp for 12-14 hours with no problem. And it's also good for grilling anything. I like to use it to bake bread. There are 2 models - I have the standalone model with the shelves on either side.

Tonight I am having some Chinese dumplings and a piece of salmon marinated in a ginger, chili, and lime juice mix. I have to get to Costco and get some more salmon fillets.
Do you get the frozen salmon filets at Costco?

^^The son of a friend of ours left over the weekend for Army boot camp in MO. He was supposed to leave 3/17 but it was delayed. I was kind of surprised they didn't hold him somewhere for 14 days before the start.

**** you Hume. Seriously, this ****ing
news groupcult needs to implode."Fox News’ Brit Hume defended comments from Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick Tuesday night, saying it is “entirely reasonable” that elderly Americans could be fine with dying amid the coronavirus outbreak to save the U.S. economy.
“The utter collapse of the country’s economy — which many think will happen if this goes on much longer — is an intolerable result,” the 76-year-old told primetime host Tucker Carlson. “[Patrick] is saying, for his own part, that he would be willing to take a risk of getting the disease if that’s what it took to allow the economy to move forward. He said that because he is late in life, that he would be perhaps more willing than he might have been at a younger age, which seems to me to be an entirely reasonable viewpoint.”

Hmmm....actually, I hope their listeners take the advice.

Yes. All things Nissan are on very shaky ground these days.
Gotcha. I have a buddy who's been a wholesaler here forever (he's ~80).
Hang in there...

The latest from Mazda world.
We have 50-60 days of liquidity, maybe less.
Gonna hold the line on staff and bet on a late-April turnaround.
March 2020 shaping up to be several leagues worse than any one month from 2008/09.
Cash 4 Clunkers 2 maybe?
We expect that Nissan may pull the plug on Infiniti.
The End is being discussed openly.
Are you in RVA? Pull the plug on Infiniti as in shutting the entire car line down?

I started reorganizing our chaotic spice cabinets. Pulled everything out, and now I can't believe all that stuff actually fit in there. So many duplicates... 5 containers of curry powder, 5 vanilla extracts, 3 parsley flakes, 3 ground cinnamons, 8 or 9 kinds of balsamic vinegar. Four Lawry's Seasoned Salt, which I haven't used in 5 years or more. THREE "Everything But the Bagel" Seasoning Blend! WTF???
How does this happen?
I had the same problem until I cleaned it out 8-10 months ago. BUT, i know there's some dupes in there now.
Since it's only the 2 of us, I wish spice companies would make spice cans/bottles 1/2 size they currently make. I wind up tossing out a lot because they have lost their taste.

I recall 8-10 days ago there was a belief that cases would double every 6 days. Based on that theory, we've seen a 667% increase from March 16th to March 22nd:
3/16 4,466 cases with 87 deaths (1.95% death rate)
3/22 34,276 cases with 413 deaths (1.20% death rate)
The next 6 day period shows:
3/17 6,135 cases with 111 deaths (1.81% death rate)
3/23 42,663 cases with 541 deaths (1.27% death rate)
A 595% increase.
So, yeah, open your university, dumbass. Things are getting better. Just make sure you don't use the healthcare available in Lynchburg. Maybe have a prayer circle jerk to cure the sick. Oh, and don't forget to charge them an entry fee for it.

re: Cruise lines. They also sail under other countries flags in order to avoid US employment rules. That way, the cruise lines can treat employees like **** (i.e., long hours, low pay, ****ty living conditions, etc.) thus improving their bottom line.

For those too young to know, the Wheaton Youth Center was a huge site for famous bands in the 60s & 70s. This documentary is about Led Zeppelin playing there (or not). Some great interviews with area promoters from that era - including Barry Richards, the Boss with the Hot Sauce.

I'm right there with you.
This whole thing was setup for the White House Occupant to pull victory from the jaws of defeat (by Biden). He had ample opportunity (Jan/Feb/early Mar) to step up to the plate and drive in the winning run. Not only did he strike out, he hit himself in the nuts with his bat while falling to the ground swinging at a pitch that was 3 feet in front of him.
One thing it has proven to me: he has surrounded himself with people who can't process information unless it comes from White House Occupant. Someone in his 'circle' (which could be anyone in or out of the government) could have sold it to him as an 'opportunity'. They were ALL too ****ing stupid & incompetent to do it. Or better, too stupid to listen to anything outside his ****ing mouth. As usual, he went with his 'gut' and made an incredibly incorrect catastrophic call. He did. No one else.
