  1. no, i haven't.  I used to have slightly even older bikes, steel I think... all since stolen or wrecked.   I bought this one 3 or 4 years ago from the Phoenix bike barns (at Barcroft Park, on 4 mile run--- they teach at-risk kids how to repair bikes, and keep out of trouble a bit) ... it didn;t seem like this bike had ever been ridden when i bought it :) ,   but I haven;t been as kind to it .....

Honestly other than the components maybe being a bit more ergonomic to use your ride on that is probably a lot more smooth than the newer aluminum frames. Plus it's just a cool looking bike. :)

If you do ever decide to get something newer I think trek is making steel road bikes again.

  2. the grey tubes are graphite, i am not sure what they use to make the yellow forks, but i think they are aluminum??

apparently this type of mixed frme was discontinued after a few bike frames split apart where the graphite and <metal> were joined.. an exciting end to ANY ride!

<edit, i judt looked, and it is some sort of an aluminum alloy>

That's crazy. The fork shape on your bike usually denotes steel since there are issues (imagined or real) with aluminum handling the stress on the curved part. The tube thickness also is reminiscent of steel. It's a cool bike though. Have you ever ridden an all aluminum frame?

  3. i bike on the "gravel stretch" of the C&O often, and i am on an old road bike .... but i don;t have the skiny road bike tires anymore, i have slightly fatter gatorskin (i think they are "hardshell?") tires, that cost about $100 each in DC bike stores.   I used to get flats ALLTHETIME, and almost never get them now...

.. and it is nice to have a road bike on that route.. as soon you get off the gravel, you have 4 or 5 miles of flat/straight rail-trail, where it feels great to just burn as fast as you can :)

    -----

edit... i should qualify that statement:  my bike was called a road bike in 1989, i am not sure what it would be called now! ;)

(not my bike... but the exact same)

Oh yeah, you can modify them so that they handle it better for sure. Similar to switching to slicks on a mountain bike for road riding. I have seen models from Giant and Trek that have the road bike geometry but more hybrid-like tires to handle modest off-roading but without changing tires a road bike probably isn't Forehead's best option.

Also your bike is a beautiful classic steel frame. It probably handles the bumps and other things better than the aluminum frames you find on current road bikes.

  4. Thanks for the input all. Looks like I'll have to wander into one of the local shops at some point.

That's really going to be the best way to start if for no other reason than to find out what size bike you need and to try out the different styles.

It sounds like a road bike might not be the best way to go if you have a gravel stretch you have to travel through but if you go to a shop give one or two a try anyway cause you never know, you may fall in love with them and decide that's the style you want.

Once you have that info come back here and the people in this thread can give a more intelligent/informed answer on what seems like a good deal. And be wary of salesmen trying to sell you "last years model deal" unless the bike is a good fit and and fits what you want to do on a bike.

Here's an article about the different types: http://www.bikeradar.com/us/beginners/gear/article/what-type-of-bike-should-i-buy-39627/

  5. Okay, looking for opinions.

    I don't know a think about bikes

    Thanks

How long is your commute going to be and what type of terrain? Are you comfortable on a road bike or do you prefer to be more upright?

  6. Nice gesture, but not super-noble, because it's easy to show love to your opponent after you just beat him.

The true test of a man's character is if he can do that, after a loss.

Super-noble, no. I doubt any but his biggest fans would claim that of any of his actions. Notable, to me yes. For a guy with the rep he has it's notable and commendable that he at least makes it a point to praise his opponents skill and prowess after defeating them.

The last time Floyd lost was the olympics in a fight even the dude who was declared the winner seemed to think Floyd had won. Floyd bowed to all four corners of the ring and hugged his coach.

I'm not a Floyd fan. Floyd beat my favorite boxer, Shane Mosley, much the same way he beat Pac tonight. But I noted he gave Shane props after doing so and it's always struck me as very counter to the perception of him as a fighter and something I respect about him.

  7. Human feces found in closet where couple spent 2 days

A man and a woman thought they were trapped in a Daytona State College closet for two days until police let them out Tuesday – and found out the two could have opened the door themselves...

...A police officer, trying to figure out how the two could have gotten locked in, went into the closet and closed the door, police said. The door did not lock.

Marvin Tramaine Hill II was arrested by Des Moines police yesterday after allegedly hitting his pregnant wife with a McDonald's McChicken sandwich "because he doesn't like them."

The Des Moines Register reports that when police arrived at Hill's home Tuesday, he claimedhis wife was the one that assaulted him:

Hill said his wife woke him up around 1 p.m. with a McChicken in hand. He admitted to police that he became upset and threw the sandwich at her, then picked up some of the bun, throwing it at her again...

  9. This is hilarious to me. I was going to post it in the wb36 eagle-fellating/nfc east thread as that seems to encompass everyone in the division but figured it belonged here instead:

Emmitt Smith's Lock Of The Week!

"This week, I like the Titans (+6.5) to win in Houston! I know that JJ Watt is a yeast, with frankish athletic utility. HE IS TRULY A MODERN MARBLE. But the Texans have such huge quenchin’ marks at Courting back! Do you go with Ryan Fitzgerald (who went to Haverford!)? Do you go with Tom Sandwich? What do you do now that Ryan Mallard is gone? It’s a cannondrum! I also like the Keiths (+1) at home against Denver! CAN’T GO AGAINST THE CROWD AT AEROBED! Happy That’s Giving, everyone! Hope you’re as excited as I am for turnlips, sweet tomato pie, green bean asshole, and GAYVY! Lots of GAYVY!"

    2014 Emmitt Smith record: 7-7

  10. Bought a road bike last year. So far my longest ride had only been 35 miles but I ride to work most days. I'll probably be ramping it up now that it's cooling down plus Tucson is building something called "the loop" which is a 55 mile ride around the city.

    Hopefully this thread takes off.

  11. I thought so. It's not funny, but I thought some here would appreciate it.

It is a cool story. Very well told imo.

A little Mexi-mullet action for the 400th page (in max posts per page view)

And a sandwich shop I saw on the north side of Tucson about a month ago. You can't see the sausage specials listed on the window unfortunately.

  12. Almost started a thread for this, but eh, I've started far too many for my tastes recently:

    http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/americas-rudest-cities/12

    America's Rudest Cities:No. 10 Dallas/Fort Worth

Big D is a big dud according to AFC voters, who find the city and its locals anything but fun-loving: its ****tail hour ranks No. 29 and the live music is next to last (No. 34).

And not only are the residents deemed not-so-smart (No. 28),

they’re not even worth looking at, AFC readers said: the city ranks last for people-watching.

I found it funny that an independent source basically said the same thing about dallas that Joe Gibbs did.
