  1. I think we’d have to look VERY bad against the Giants for the line to be that high. Consider Dallas is -10.5 v Carolina this week… I understand that’s on road, but still. I think it’s more likely our line with them lands in the 7-8.5 range.
  2. Today was a death blow to any realistic prayer of the 5/6 seed. It’s 7 seed or bust now and while “bust” appears more likely, facing the Giants next week could provide an opportunity to stay in mix. To me the key is being 6-7 heading into the Rams/Jets games. That would represent an opportunity to then get to 8-7 and that would most likely put us right at top of the 7 seed convo with two weeks to go. In order to get to 6-7, the Giants game is of course a must. Then we’d need to beat either Dallas or Miami. Minnesota is the fly in the ointment of the 7 seed mix currently but I’m not ready to crown them. Could be some “come down to earth” possibilities with them in coming weeks. Beat the Giants, Vikes lose, and you’re one game back. I would say most importantly, beat the Giants and the Thanksgiving game is at least relevant.
  3. I was afraid this might happen... as the game wore on, I started thinking it could land 20-17, knowing full well that is the most common final score in NFL history. So, here goes: This was the 286th time in NFL history a game finished 20-17; easily the most common final score. Of those 286 games, 9 came in the post-season with one Super Bowl (2001: Patriots 20, Rams 17). Washington has fared well in the 31 different 20-17 games they've played going 20-11. 1951: Win at Chicago Cardinals 1956: Win at Cleveland Browns 1974: Win vs Miami Dolphins 1975: Loss at St. Louis Cardinals 1976: Win at Philadelphia Eagles 1977: Loss at New York Giants 1978: Loss at Atlanta Falcons 1980: Loss at Denver Broncos 1986: Win at St. Louis Cardinals 1988: Win at Green Bay Packers 1988: Loss at Cincinnati Bengals 1992: Win vs Dallas Cowboys 1995: Win vs Carolina Panthers 1997: Loss vs Baltimore Ravens 1999: Win vs Philadelphia Eagles 2000: Win vs Carolina Panthers 2000: Win vs Tampa Bay Bucs 2001: Win vs Arizona Cardinals 2002: Win vs St. Louis Rams 2003: Win vs New England Patriots 2003: Loss vs Carolina Panthers 2005: Win vs Seattle Seahawks 2006: Loss at Tampa Bay Bucs 2008: Win at Seattle Seahawks 2009: Loss at Carolina Panthers 2010: Win at Jacksonville Jaguars 2014: Win at Dallas Cowboys 2016: Loss at Detroit Lions 2018: Win vs Dallas Cowboys 2022: Loss vs Minnesota Vikings 2023: Win at New England Patriots Overall: 20-11 11-3 Home; 9-8 Road Some odd trends: --Seems strange that between 1937-1991, they only played one home game that ended 20-17 --Then, no road games ended 20-17 between 1989-2005 --They've played more 20-17 games v Panthers than any other opponent (only once vs Giants) Some game notes: --1974 game Miami led at half 10-0 and was just 10-3 going into the 4th. Wild fourth quarter ensued with Redskins pulling it out late. Two of the better teams of the early to mid 70's and a rematch of the SB from two years prior. --1975 loss at Cardinals... I THINK this was the "Mel Gray TD catch" game. --1976 win at Vet in Philly was in OT on MNF --1977 win vs Giants was the first game played after the birth of yours truly five days prior --1980 loss at Denver was MNF... Art Monk caught a TD in that game... his rookie year... not sure if that may have been his first --1988 at Packers was not at Lambeau; back then the Packers played a couple of games per year in Milwaukee... an ugly win --I remember the loss at Cincy in 1988 very clearly. Last game of season on a Saturday afternoon. We stumbled down the stretch in 1988 and had been eliminated from playoffs, but at that age every game still really mattered to me. We lost in OT and it left us 7-9 that year-- the only losing season in the first Gibbs run as coach. Also hard to believe the season ended BEFORE Christmas. --The 1992 win at RFK vs Dallas is still easily in my top 5 wins/memories of all time. Such an incredible game with a wild ending. It was one of those memories where the details of the game and the day itself have remained very sharp for me-- I remember the weather where I was and what we had for dinner. Just a fun, exhilarating, satisfying win. It kept the dreams of a repeat SB run alive. --"The Bam Morris" game in 1997 still bugs me --The two wins in 2000 both came early in the year. In both games, the offense struggled and the defense carried us. This would of course become a theme for the entire 2000 season. --The wins in 2002 (Rams) and 2003 (Patriots) were probably the two best/most exciting wins of the Spurrier era. Heck in 2003, that got us to 3-1 and I thought we might be off a running. It would also be the Pats last loss before their historic winning streak. --The 2005 win vs Seattle was fun. Our last 3-0 start to a season. We had it, blew it, and then got lucky that Josh Brown missed a FG at the end of regulation. --I was in attendance for the win at Dallas in 2014 on MNF... got field passes prior to game and met Joey T. Always good to get a win at Dallas and was a fun night; didn't feel great going to OT, but they got it done. --The 2016 loss at Detroit hurt. We were on a 4 game win streak and the game that day was right there to be had. This would become one of many losses in 2016 that kept us from big things. 2016 and 1997 were similar seasons... both 8-7-1, both could have gone MUCH differently had the team just won a couple of games that were there for the taking. --The 2018 win vs Dallas is probably one of the better FedEx wins of the past decade. --The loss last year to Minny probably bugged me more than any other last year. That iffy PI on BSJ was frustrating. It's game over if that Pick 6 stands. We beat the hell out of Kirk that day; credit to him for hanging in and making plays.
  4. Tend to agree that Seattle is really just an average team similar to us. It IS a tough place to play though and I don’t trust our defense to get stops against a competent QB/balanced attack. It’s a game where we have a chance, but Howell is probably going to need to be fully locked in again. He will probably need an “A” game.
  5. This week is our chance to REALLY insert ourselves into the race. If we beat Seattle, then the 6 seed absolutely becomes in-play as we’d own the tie-breaker with the Seahawks. If we lose in Seattle and then beat the Giants, I would guess at that point it would be 7 seed or bust, 5-6 going into Dallas on Thanksgiving. It’s still really early to target rooting interests, but Minnesota is probably the one to watch most closely currently. We should root for Saints to win the South as we own tie-breaker with Falcons. Vikings are in big time QB trouble, but the schedule is easy. Saints play at Minny this week and I would say root for NOLA.
  6. This was the 38th time in NFL history a game has ended 38-31. All but one (a 2003 divisional playoff game between Chiefs/Colts) was played in regular season. This was the 4th time in Washington history a game landed 38-31: 1995: @ Broncos 38, Redskins 31 2012: Bengals 38, @ Redskins 31 2012: Redskins 38, @ Cowboys 31 2023: Eagles 38, @ Commanders 31 1-3 (0-2 home; 1-1 road) —The 1995 game was quite memorable for me. Second time this year we’ve talked about 1995.. a more competitive season than record indicates. This was the third game of season and really hurt. We fell behind 24-7, but fought back to tie it. Denver took a 31-24 lead but Frerotte (big game) led a game tying drive. Unfortunately we left Elway just enough time. On the final play he hit Rod Smith with a semi-Hail Mary (43 yards out). I say “semi” because the route was essentially one on one with Green and Smith won the jump ball. Back then, the rule stated you had to kick the PAT even though there was no time on clock. I was really upset. I walked out of the sports bar (my senior year in HS) saw an empty beer bottle and picked it up and launched it… into the street. Got lucky it didn’t hit anyone or anything. Dumb. —Bengals game was really fun early in the RG3 season. Cincy offense cooked us though and we just couldn’t get a big stop. —I was at the Thanksgiving Game in Dallas that year. Probably the best/most fun win I’ve ever seen in person. There was also an awesome ES tailgate prior. Great group and it was a gorgeous day to boot. Took my father in law and we had a fantastic time. One of the more satisfying wins of the Snyder era and not as close as score indicated. This was the peak of that offense just doing whatever it wanted. A fun/memorable game. Had we not scored the late TD it would have been same total.. we’ve played in three 38-24 games.
  7. Outside chance 7-10 could get a team in this year given the landscape. I’d still think that’s a long shot but may wind up being on the table. If they win one of next three they’d be 4-7 for the Thanksgiving game and that would likely be your last gasp chance to realistically stay in it.
  8. Folks, the last wild card (7 seed) in NFC is gonna be quite the ride this year. Currently, Washington sits one game out of the last seed behind the Vikings and Saints (4-4). Also behind Bucs (3-4) and lose a tie-breaker currently to Rams (3-5). But consider a few things —Kirk is done for the year in Minnesota —Stafford injured for Rams and initially reports are it might be problematic —Saints are 4-4, but so are Falcons, a team we already own tie-beaker on. I think an 8-9 #7 seed is absolutely in play in the NFC this year. Washington could find themselves tied for the 7 seed after next week simply by beating the Patriots.
  9. Sunday was the 90th time in NFL history that a game ended in a final score of 14-7. All but three were regular season games (the 1944 NFL Champ game Packers over Giants, Super Bowl 7, and a 1977 Divisional playoff game Vikings over Rams). You can see a marked change in how the trend of this score has played out over the years. Obviously as offenses evolved, this has become a less and less common outcome, whereas it was a normal occurrence in the early years of the league. Also note, this is WASHINGTON history so I do not count anything from the Boston Redskins era. While it's happened 90 times, 55 of them came prior to the merger in the early 70's and only 11 have taken place since 1990. So this started off as a fairly common outcome and has morphed into a rare outcome (for example, it only happened twice the entire decade of the 90's-- one game in which we were involved). 1942: Giants 14, @ Redskins 7 1942: Redskins 14, @ Giants 7 1944: @ Redskins 14, Boston Yanks 7 1946: @ Steelers 14, Redskins 7 1961: @ Eagles 14, Redskins 7 1964: Steelers 14, @ Redskins 7 1969: Redskins 14, @ Steelers 7 1972: Dolphins 7, Redskins 7 (Super Bowl) 1973: @ Redskins 14, Cowboys 7 1977: Cowboys 14, @ Redskins 7 1985: Redskins 14, @ Browns 7 1995: Eagles 14, @ Redskins 7 2023: @ Giants 14, Redskins 7 Overall 5-8 (2-4 home; 3-3 road, 0-1 neutral) --The 1942 games are interesting to note because the loss to the Giants was the Redskins only loss that season en route to the NFL Championship --The Boston Yanks were a short-lived franchise that played at Fenway Park-- eventually moved to NY, and then folded --Sonny was the winning QB for the Eagles in the 1961 game --I've always been interested in the 1969 Redskins because that was the lone Vince Lombardi season. The 1969 game featured Lombardi in his final season, while Chuck Noll was in his first for the Steelers --As someone who has been deeply interested in team/league history, whenever I see "14-7" I will always think of SB 7 even though it took place five years before I was born. I'd say it's a fairly well know game as it capped the Dolphins 17-0 season. For those that may not know, the Redskins blocked a FG attempt late, the Dolphins kicker bungled it, and wound up throwing/fumbling an interception to Mike Bass who returned it for a TD to keep faint hopes alive in that game. Had the FG been made the final score of the game likely would have been 17-0 to match the record. --The 1973 game featured on the most iconic moments in RFK history. MNF against their rivals, it was a struggle all night and Dallas led 7-0 entering the fourth. Two fourth quarter TDs gave Washington the lead and Ken Houston sealed the game by tackling Walt Garrison just short of the goal line on the final play of the game. --Dallas would get a measure of revenge, again at RFK, in 1977 when THEY came back from down 7-0 in second half to win the game. --1985 at Cleveland was a fairly forgettable game, but it did mark one of the last big games for John Riggins (112 yards that day). --The 1995 was also pretty forgettable, but it sort of fell in line with a lot of games in the 1995 season. After being awful in 1993 and 1994, the Redskins were quite improved in 1995, but they lost a bunch of close games. The final record of 6-10 was probably not truly indicative of who they were that year. It was a far more enjoyable season than either of the previous two seasons. Eagles came in 7-4 and Redskins were 3-8, but it was a tight game. Redskins held a 7-6 lead in fourth quarter before Eagles scored and then held on to win. Heath Shuler started this game for the Redskins and it was pretty clear by this point that he just couldn't really play.
  10. The last wild card in NFC is absolutely wide open and I will be stunned if it doesn’t stay that way. The 5/6 seeds seem to be being concedes to Dallas/Seattle and while I understand the reasoning, it’s still pretty early for that. But it’s going to take some very extreme results for us to NOT find ourselves “in the race” around Thanksgiving.
  11. Five total 40-20 games including ours. Only one that sorta stood out was an Oilers/Bengals game from Dec 1990 that I believe had major playoff implications— Bengals rallied to win.
  12. First of all, I failed to do the Bears game… that was a scorigami for the organization — first time we ever participated in a 40-20 game. The win Sunday in Atlanta marked the 54th time in NFL history a game ended 24-16 with all but one of them (the 1961 AFL championship game) being in the regular season. This was the fourth time in franchise history a game has ended 24-16, with the team now 2-2 in those games (1-2 on road, 1-0 at home) 1965: @ Browns 24, Redskins 16 2007 @ Redskins 24, Bears 16 2013 @ Eagles 24, Redskins 16 2023 Commanders 24, @ Falcons 16 —The 1965 game was shaping up as an upset at the half with the Redskins leading 16-7. Browns came back and put the game away on a Jim Brown TD (remember no two point conversion in those days). Brown had 141 yards rushing for the game. —The 2007 game was probably a rare instance where a Thursday night game/short week was beneficial for all. This was the game that came four days after the devastating loss to the Bills following the death of Sean Taylor. I remember being pretty numb going into the Bears game both due to the tragedy and also because I felt the season had likely ended in the Bills game. The win vs the Bears sort of helped ease the pain of the Bills game and gave the team (and fans) a chance to reset. —I have basically zero recollection of the 2013 loss in Philly. Very vague memories of watching and not really caring. I am glad the Falcons went for 2 and we didn’t win 24-17; I’d have been much busier this week.
  13. I’d say a solid chance an 8-9 team makes it in this year and I’d be really surprised if any 9+ win teams miss out. You likely won’t be “out of the race” until you lose your 10th game this year.
  14. Looking like no flex for week 8. Probably would have been announced by now. Surprising that Bears/Chargers would remain on SNF, but NFL perhaps thinking too early in season to deal with the logistical hassles of moving games. No official word yet, but for those hoping against a primetime game v Philly, you are probably gonna get your wish.
  15. Announcement will be made tomorrow about week 8 SNF flex/changes. I will be STUNNED if Bears/Chargers stays. And our game is the most likely/easiest to move. I think Browns-Seahawks could be a candidate as well, but Eagles/Commanders sets up even better. I would say we have entered “good chance” territory for our game to get flexed in.
  16. I can’t imagine not wanting to make the playoffs out of fear you will lose in the playoffs. Especially considering our history of the past 30 years.
  17. That was a very important game between two big market teams that went down to the wire. It was a successful flex for the NFL/NBC
  18. I usually drop this thread much later than this. And yes it is definitely too early to legitimately discuss playoff scenarios, rooting interests, etc (but that won’t necessarily stop me from doing it). But the reason I am starting this thread now is because it also annually deals with the schedule, flexes, etc. I ams specifically doing it RIGHT NOW because I think we have a flex possibility for our game vs Eagles. The SNF game that week is Bears at Chargers. It was bad on paper anyway, but with Fields injury + Bears loss, that becomes close to a “must flex.” And that day, Eagles at Commanders would likely be the leader in clubhouse to replace. This is not official and the league has until Tuesday to decide, but something to keep tabs on next 24 hours or so.
  19. Correct, Ryp was mostly hurt that year and he was awful when played… in a game at Buffalo that year he was 15-42 for the game. Wow. And yes, Gannon was on the team and started a few miserable games. He has one career win as a Redskin and I happened to be there. Visiting my grandparents near Orlando, my Dad and I drove over to Tampa late in year. Two awful teams. Gannon started, completed a total of 9 passes for about 70 yards, but we ran it pretty well and won.
  20. This was the 78th time any game in the NFL has ended in a 34-31 score and the 74th time in the regular season. One Super Bowl (2012) as well-- Ravens 34, 49ers 31 For Washington, this was the 5th time a game has ended 34-31. They are now 2-3 in those games with all but one (1965) coming on the road. 1965: Washington 34, Dallas 31 1966: Washington 34, Dallas 31 1993: Philadelphia 34, Washington 31 2017: New Orleans 34, Washington 31 (OT) 2023: Philadelphia 34, Washington 31 (OT) Game Notes: --In both 1965 and 1966, the Redskins rallied down 2 scores in the 4th to beat the Cowboys --The 1993 game is VERY memorable to me. In many ways, this game signifies the beginning of the 30 years of disappointment surrounding the franchise. Petitbone had taken over for Gibbs and I don't think any Redskins fans really knew what was coming-- I certainly didn't. We destroyed Dallas on MNF to open the season and then suffered our first home loss to Cardinals in well over a decade the next week, which I chalked up to an anomaly. Third game of year was at Philly. It was a fun and wild game. Back and forth all day; Redskins led 21-10 in third and seemed to have some control before an Eric Allen Pick 6 gave the Eagles life. After Philly tied it 24-24, Reggie Brooks (who I thought was going to be a legend) took one 85 yards to the house. An Eagles FG made it 31-27 late, but we were unable to bleed the clock out. Eagles had one last chance and Randall drove them down the field, connecting in the back of the end zone to Calvin Williams to win it. This was a devastating loss at the time. The season completely spiraled out of control from there and in a lot of ways, we never recovered. --Unfortunately, the 2017 game at the Superdome was even MORE memorable for me because I was there. Now, ultimately, my memories are good. I took my oldest daughter for the weekend, who was 8 at the time. We had a great time and she loved the city. Gameday atmosphere was also fantastic (my only trip to the Superdome) and we played SO well that day. I thought Gruden coached one of his best games. At 31-15, it very much felt like we had it locked up. Obviously got antsy when Saints got it down to 8. Then, the hand off to Perine that came up half a yard short. We probably should have just gone for it. Had a very bad feeling once Brees got the ball back and the building was pretty electric. When they tied it, I think the roar overwhelmed my daughter and she got upset. I was trying to calm and console her as we drove for what would have been a game-winning FG attempt. Of course, we screwed up the drive after quickly getting into NOLA territory and didn't even get to attempt a FG. OT felt doomed...it was. My daughter was inconsolable on the way back to hotel. Funny, because I felt even worse than she did most likely, but felt I needed to be the grown-up and not pout myself. That one really hurt though. I had no such feeling this past Sunday. I wanted Ron to go for 2, but I don't think it was some sort of awful decision either. Little bit of bad luck there on the Terry non-catch in OT. But nothing about this past Sunday felt doomsday to me at all. More encouraging. HAD we gone for 2 and made it, it would have been the first 32-31 outcome in franchise history. Had we gone for it and not made it, it would have been the 25th game in NFL history to end 31-30 and we would have been involved in 7 of them.
  21. It’s definitely down the order now almost to the point of irrelevance. Wish I could remember the year, I believe it was mid to late 90’s the last time I can remember it being a big deal in the final weekend. There were multiple teams involved and I distinctly recall Berman’s recap on Primetime doing a bit about it cutting back and forth to different games.
  22. We have a Scorigami! Well, an individual franchise Scorigami at least. Sunday marked the first time in franchise history a game ended in a final score of 37-3. It is now the 12th game in NFL history overall to finish 37-3. All of them have taken place since 1981 (first was Bucs over Packers) and eight of them since 2006. The Packers have been involved in the most games (2-1) and the Packers and Bucs have the most wins (2). This was also the first time Buffalo has been in a 37-3 game. Wondering if any other losing team kicked a FG down 37-0 to land on the final score? That answer is no. In 2013, the Jags took a 3-0 lead over Colts before giving up 37 straight. Had we not kicked the FG and lost 37-0; it would have been the second such game in franchise history— a 37-0 loss at Lambeau on MNF in 2001 (our first game after 9/11).
  23. Win or lose actually. That surprised me as well.
  24. There have only been six total games in NFL history that have ended 35-33. Washington has been involved in two of them now: 11-15-70: Giants 35, Redskins 33 at Yankee Stadium. Washington entered the game at 4-4 while the Giants came in at 5-3. So this was a big game for the Redskins at the time. After having to settle for FOUR first half FGs, Washington exploded in the third quarter and wound up taking a 33-14 lead into the 4th. But the Giants rallied for 21 unanswered points in the 4th to steal the victory. So Washington is now 1-1 in 35-33 games, both coming on the road. Full list of all games: 1951: Packers 35, Steelers 33 1970: Giants 35, Redskins 33 1985 Browns 35, Giants 33 2012 Colts 35, Lions 33 2015 Colts 35, Titans 33 2023: Commanders 35, Broncos 33 All six of these games would be considered come from behind wins; the 2015 Colts game is the ONLY one on the list where the go ahead points were scored late (in that game Colts rallied from down 13 in third quarter and then Titans actually scored late but missed conversion— very similar to our game in Denver). Had the Hail Mary not been caught? While there is a slightly longer list of 35-27 NFL games, it would have been the first time in Washington franchise history a game landed there.
