Ind. may have 'bad driver surcharge'

January 3, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- State transportation officials are considering a ''bad driver surcharge'' that would fine drivers who cause accidents that lead to traffic jams.

The fee is meant to reduce the number of traffic-snarling crashes on Indiana's most congested highways and roads, the Indianapolis Star reported.

''If you have a driver that's causing problems, that takes use of the roads away from others,'' said Thomas Sharp, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation. ''The whole purpose is to keep traffic moving.''

The fine would require General Assembly approval. It is listed as a ''recommended funding option'' in Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' Major Moves road plan.

You have to catch the people driving down the same 2 miles of the same shoulder of the road... that you've ignored till now...

You have to catch the people that drive down the off ramp and then back on the road 1 mile up ahead you ignore till now...

You have to catch the people that drive 3 lanes across then 2 back then 2 back the other way then 4 lanes across like they have another quarter if they crash...

You have to catch the same people in the same massive intersection box that gets blocked at the same time every weekday.. Same thing on the long light on the same intersection that gets run...

They could stop a lot of it now with recklass driving laws and its points with tons of cash.. The only problem is the same cop cars are in the Median 4 miles down the road parked next to each other facing opposite directions talking or behind the Petco eating..

I hope they do it right, but from what i've seen all over the country.... it'll be used on low quota months when they want the extra cash, not to fix known problem locations.

I am for a tiered license structure, with a difficult written and road test that yields 5 levels of privledges that include (or not) driving on the interstate, driving in the left lane, driving in the rain, driving in the snow, driving at night, driving during rush hours, driving a car with more than 100 hp.........get a ticket, lower level of license and less privledges, get in an accident, right lane only, during off peak hours, daytime, no interstate...........and 6 months of driving school.
